A Mobility-aware Load Balancing Technique to Reduce Makespan in Fog-Enabled Networks

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Seraj, Yasaman (Author) ; Hemmatyar, Ali Mohammad Afshin (Supervisor) ; Safaei, Bardia (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Fog computing is essentially the expansion of cloud computing towards the network edge, reducing user access time to computing resources and services. Various advantages of fog computing, including reduced latency, improve user experience; however, user mobility may limit the benefits of fog computing. By moving users from one location to another, their distance from a fog service and consequently the latency may increase. One solution to maintain latency within an acceptable range is the migration of fog tasks and preserving the distance between the user and available resources. Although some research has been conducted on fog task migration, none of them have considered load balancing in...

Static strain aging behavior of a manganese-silicon steel after single and multi-stage straining

    , Article Journal of Materials Engineering and Performance ; Volume 25, Issue 3 , 2016 , Pages 1047-1055 ; 10599495 (ISSN) Seraj, P ; Serajzadeh, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Springer New York LLC  2016
    Abstract
In this work, static strain aging behavior of an alloy steel containing high amounts of silicon and manganese was examined while the influences of initial microstructure and pre-strain on the aging kinetics were evaluated as well. The rate of strain aging in a low carbon steel was also determined and compared with that occurred in the alloy steel. The rates of static strain aging in the steels were defined at room temperature and at 95 °C by means of double-hit tensile testing and hardness measurements. In addition, three-stage aging experiments at 80 °C were carried out to estimate aging behavior under multi-pass deformation processing. The results showed that in-solution manganese and...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Seraj, Mostafa (Author) ; Barakchian, Mahdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Value-at-Risk (VaR) is the most commontool for risk management. This tool is used to measure market risk and also used as a basis in determining financial standards for international financial institutions. VaR is the maximum loss of the asset portfolio at the specified confidence level and certain time horizon. Many parametric, nonparametric and semi parametric methods have been invented for VaR estimation. Each one of these methods has its advantages and disadvantages and different methods may perform better in differnet situations. When estimating VaR, we can choose one of these methods or we can combine the VaRs estimated by different methods. There are few researches conducted on VaR...

Improvement of Existing Expand-based Approaches for Construction of Lexical Ontologies with Bi-lingual Dictionaries

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Seraj, Ali (Author) ; Abolhassani, Hassan (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Nowadays the importance of ontologies in various domains such as semantic web and NLP is obvious. Manually construction of ontologies is a time-consuming, costly and error prone. The non-manual building of ontologies approaches are divided to the expand approach and the merge approach, each has pros and cons. The expand approach is preferred upon the merge approach for languages with few lingual resources. The most important thing in the expand approach, which is building an ontology from another existing ontology, is making distinction between the different meanings of polysemous words. This activity is called word sense disambiguation(WSD). The existing approaches usually give attention to...

    Abstract
Studies regarding Multiple Input - Multiple Output synthetic aperture radars, shows promising advances in synthetic aperture imaging. Compared to conventional SAR, MIMO-SAR encompasses desirable features, namely: lower background noise, better detection rate, easier implementation of imaging modes etc. Signals used in these radars, are required to have specific properties such as orthogonality, large time-bandwidth product, high Doppler tolerance and qualified ambiguity function. Also because of the specific geometry of SAR imaging, these signals should remain orthogonal in respectively large Doppler shifts and time offsets. Through the past years, many signals are suggested in the...

Extremal rotating black holes in the near-horizon limit: Phase space and symmetry algebra

    , Article Physics Letters, Section B: Nuclear, Elementary Particle and High-Energy Physics ; Volume 749 , October , 2015 , Pages 443-447 ; 03702693 (ISSN) Compère, G ; Hajian, K ; Seraj, A ; Sheikh Jabbari, M. M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier  2015
    Abstract
We construct the NHEG phase space, the classical phase space of Near-Horizon Extremal Geometries with fixed angular momenta and entropy, and with the largest symmetry algebra. We focus on vacuum solutions to d dimensional Einstein gravity. Each element in the phase space is a geometry with SL(2,R)×U(1)d-3 isometries which has vanishing SL(2,R) and constant U(1) charges. We construct an on-shell vanishing symplectic structure, which leads to an infinite set of symplectic symmetries. In four spacetime dimensions, the phase space is unique and the symmetry algebra consists of the familiar Virasoro algebra, while in d> 4 dimensions the symmetry algebra, the NHEG algebra, contains infinitely many...

Wiggling throat of extremal black holes

    , Article Journal of High Energy Physics ; Volume 2015, Issue 10 , October , 2015 ; 11266708 (ISSN) Compère, G ; Hajian, K ; Seraj, A ; Sheikh Jabbari, M. M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Abstract: We construct the classical phase space of geometries in the near-horizon region of vacuum extremal black holes as announced in [arXiv:1503.07861]. Motivated by the uniqueness theorems for such solutions and for perturbations around them, we build a family of metrics depending upon a single periodic function defined on the torus spanned by the U(1) isometry directions. We show that this set of metrics is equipped with a consistent symplectic structure and hence defines a phase space. The phase space forms a representation of an infinite dimensional algebra of so-called symplectic symmetries. The symmetry algebra is an extension of the Virasoro algebra whose central extension is the...

Effect of landmark configuration on target registration error for vertebra: A phantom study

    , Article Proceedings of SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering ; Volume 8671 , 2013 ; 0277786X (ISSN) ; 9780819494450 (ISBN) Ershad, M ; Ahmadian, A ; Seraj, N. D ; Saberi, H ; Khoiy, K. A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
The configuration of landmarks is an important issue in minimizing the target registration error (TRE). In this paper the effect of different landmark configurations on the accuracy of pedicle screw placement during image guided spine surgery (IGSS) is investigated. Since the spine is deformed in intra-operative conditions compared to the preoperative situation, an accurate alignment of each vertebra is crucial to compensate for the deformation. CT compatible markers are placed over anatomical landmarks which are feasible and routinely used in surgical procedures. The TRE is obtained directly for the markers which are placed on the right and left pedicle of the vertebra. The estimated TRE...

On the Spectrum of Modified Theories of Gravity

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Seraj, Ali (Author) ; Golshani, Mehdi (Supervisor) ; Sheikh Jabbari, Mohammad Mehdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
There are different approaches in modifications of General Relativity as the theory of gravity. The modified theories of gravity are important cases in this context, which mostly start by modifying the Einstein-Hilbert action, while keeping the general covariance. Within the modified theories of gravity, we consider two cases. The first is the f(R) theories of gravity, and the second is curvature squared theories of gravity with an action like S = ∫d4x pg( 116GR + (R)2 + R2 +(R)2). Curvature squared theories of gravity have interesting feautures, most important of which is renormalizability, in contrast with General Relativity. But this advantage, as noted by K.S. Stelle in 1977 comes at...

    Abstract
Rod-shaped samples of maraging steel were additively fabricated in vertical and horizontal directions using laser powder bed fusion technique. The samples were first aged at 490 °C for 6 h and then subjected to dynamic compressive tests using Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar apparatus. The dynamic compression tests were conducted on vertical samples at strain rates of 190, 460, 810, 1100, 1300 s−1. However, the high strain rate tests were performed at strain rates of 120, 615, 745, 890, 2200 s−1 on horizontal samples. After applying the compressive impact loads on the samples, it was found that although horizontally built samples exhibit higher dynamic strength, vertically built samples show...

, Article Proc. of IMechE Part H: Journal of Engineering in Medicine ; 2009, Vol. 223, No. 6, pp. 663-675 Journal of NeuroEngineering and Rehabilitation ; Volume 11, Issue 1, 30 April 2014, Article number 78 Selk Ghafari, A. (Ali) ; Meghdari, Ali ; Vossough, Gholam Reza ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The aim of this study is to employ feedback control loops to provide a stable forward dynamics simulation of human movement under repeated position constraint conditions in the environment, particularly during stair climbing. A ten-degrees-of-freedom skeletal model containing 18 Hill-type musculotendon actuators per leg was employed to simulate the model in the sagittal plane. The postural tracking and obstacle avoidance were provided by the proportional—integral—derivative controller according to the modulation of the time rate change of the joint kinematics. The stability of the model was maintained by controlling the velocity of the body's centre of mass according to the desired centre of...

    Abstract
In the past few decades, shaking tables are widely used to evaluate system response of structures under seismic excitations. These devices are used without any fundamental research performed on a shaking table system as an entity model. In most of these studies for simplicity, it is assumed that there exist no considerable vibration and displacement around the shaking tables, and no attention is paid to the peripheral substances such as soil settled under the foundation.
In this thesis, result of ambient vibration test on shaking table system (solid deck, concrete foundation and soil layer) has been presented. Precise sensors known as low frequency and high accuracy accelerometers have...
