On a new formulation of microphenomena: Basic principles, stationary fields and beyond

    , Article Pramana - Journal of Physics ; Volume 76, Issue 6 , 2011 , Pages 843-873 ; 03044289 (ISSN) Shafiee, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
In a series of essays, beginning with this article, we are going to develop a new formulation of microphenomena based on the principles of reality and causality. The new theory provides us with a new depiction of microphenomena assuming a unified concept of information, matter and energy. So, we suppose that in a definite microphysical context (including other interacting particles), each particle is enfolded by a probability field whose existence is contingent on the existence of the particle, but it can locally affect the physical status of the particle in a context-dependent manner. The dynamics of the whole particle-field system obeys deterministic equations in a manner such that when...

Correction to black hole radiation due to pair annihilation

, Article Progress of Theoretical and Experimental Physics ; Volume 2022, Issue 3 , 2022 ; 20503911 (ISSN) Shafiee, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Physical Society of Japan  2022
    Abstract
We consider the emission of charged scalar particles from a Schwarzschild black hole. It is shown that these particles can interact with each other through pair annihilation and, as a result, produce photons. These photons make a correction to the spectrum of photons that are directly emitted from the black hole. By solving the field equations using the Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin approximation, the pair annihilation rate is taken into account for the most probable case, i.e. the first order, and therefore the correction will be of the order of e2. Considering this scenario, we show that most interactions take place near the event horizon of the black hole, yet the number of interactions is...

Investigating the impacts of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles on power distribution systems

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Smart Grid ; Volume 4, Issue 3 , 2013 , Pages 1351-1360 ; 19493053 (ISSN) Shafiee, S ; Fotuhi Firuzabad, M ; Rastegar, M
    2013
    Abstract
Despite the economic and environmental advantages of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), the increased utilization of PHEVs brings up new concerns for power distribution system decision makers. Impacts of PHEVs on distribution networks, although have been proven to be noticeable, have not been thoroughly investigated for future years. In this paper, a comprehensive model is proposed to study the PHEV impacts on residential distribution systems. In so doing, PHEV fundamental characteristics, i.e., PHEV battery capacity, PHEV state of charge (SOC), and PHEV energy consumption in daily trips, are accurately modeled. As some of these effective characteristics depend on vehicle owner's...

A Survey on the Concept of Quantum Theory: Measurement Problem and A Critical Approach to Decoherence Interpretation

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Tirandaz, Arash (Author) ; Shafiee, Afshin (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Studying the puzzling aspects of quantum phenomenon is quite important subject from different points of view. It must be specially regarded through some major aspects such as: wave-particle dualty, Bell’s theorem no-go theorems, complementarity, entanglement and measurement problem. In this project, we survey subsequently the above topics with a careful attention regarding the measurement problem. One of the most relevant ways claiming to solve measurement problem is the decoherence theory. Scrutinizing the details of formalism and description basis of decoherence, we critically explain and asses the different aspects of this theory

A Survey on Some Modern Approaches to Quantum Thermodynamics

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Sadri, Keyvan (Author) ; Shafiee, Afshin (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The relationship between quantum theory and thermodynamics has gained so much attention in recent years. Thermodynamics is indeed a phenomenological science and its theoretical foundations are not clear as well. In the nineteenth century, Boltzmann tried to establish a connection between concepts of thermodynamics and classical mechanics (as a consistent theoretical domain). With development of quantum mechanics in twentieth century, the possibility of analyzing and formulating of the multi-particle systems based on quantum formalism increased. Quantum approach to thermodynamic phenomena has been studied in various ways. Here basic questions are, e.g. how to define Thermodynamic entities...

    An Investigation of Leggett’s Inequality

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Kashefi, Maryam (Author) ; Shafiee, Afshin (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Quantum correlations are among most intriguing problems in physics. Bell’s inequality which was proved in 1964 provides with us the possibility of comparing the predictions of quantum theory with what an underlying local realistic theory may reproduce for some given observables in correlated states. The violation of Bell’s inequality in practice prohibits the existance of such underlying theories. Yet, it is not clear which of the assumption, i.e., locality or reality is responsible for explaining the experimentally verified violations. In 2003, a Nobel prizewinner A. J. Leggett proved a new inequality in which the locality assumption was not crucial. Here, we explore different aspects of...

Experimental Study of Microbubbles Generation as a Contrast Agent in Blood, to Determine the Blood Flow by Echo-PIV Method

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Salari, Alinaghi (Author) ; Shafiee, Behshad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Today microbubbles are broadly used as ultrasound contrast agents. These bubbles enhance the image resolution of B-mode pictures. Flow focusing in microchannels could provide us the goal of one-size bubbles generation. Microbubbles could use as tracers in Echo_PIV method to determine the velocity profile in main body vessels such as carotid. In this paper we introduce a new production method to fabricate a low-cost microchannel for preparing Microbubble contrast agents (less than 50 microns) by using some surface active agents and a viscosity enhancing material to obtain appropriate Microbubbles with desired life time and stability for any in vitro infusion for velocity measurement. By...

On Proposing New Thought Experiments in Quantum Domain

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Bahrami, Mohammad (Author) ; Shafiee, Afshin (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Although quantum mechanics has thrilled a multitude of successes since its birth, it has also generated puzzles that persist to this day. These puzzles are largely connected with the role of measurement in quantum mechanics. Therefore, we are dealing with individual phenomena and that our possibilities of handling the measuring instruments allow us only to make a choice between the different complementary types of phenomena. Within the framework of delayed-choice experiments, the choice between complementary types of phenomena is postponed to the moments after the preparation of system is a superposition state. Regarding the probability theory, we have concluded that the delayed-choice...

The Role and Significance of the Concept of Information in Physical Phenomena

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Karimi, Majid (Author) ; Shafiee, Afshin (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Undoubtedly, the concept of information has an outstanding role in our description of physical systems and biological processes. In the framework of pragmatic approach, information is a useful notion through which any physical event gets its significance. In this approach, information can be understood and recognized while it is capable of producing new information. Thus, the meaning of information depends on our recognition and understanding as conscious beings. Accordingly, the following question may arise: where is the role of conscious being in the emergence of physical properties in Nature? To answer this fundamental question, we first investigate how information enters the physics, in...

Adaptive Estimation of Components of a Three-Phase Signal Polluted with Sinusoidal Disturbance

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Shafiee, Ashkan (Author) ; Karimi, Houshang (Supervisor)
    Abstract
This thesis proposes a new method for estimation of parameters of a multi-component signal. The signal is composed of several sinusoidal components whose frequencies and magnitudes are unknown. Moreover, the signal is polluted with white noise. The estimated parameters are frequency, amplitude, and phase-angle of each component. The proposed method is able to adaptively decompose the multi-component signal into its constituting sinusoidal components. The core unit of the proposed method comprises an adaptive band-pass and an adaptive notch filter. The proposed method consists of parallel connection of several core units. The band pass filter rejects all components except the one whose...

Critical Investigation of Decoherecne Theory in Different Physical Contexts

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Tirandaz, Arash (Author) ; Shafiee, Afshin (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Considering the consistency between the predictions of a theory with what is observed in experience, Quantum Mechanics is the most accurate theory in the history of physics. However, is does not present us an unmbigiuos and realistic description about the nature of the microscopic phenomena. At the heart of these issues is the so-called measurement problem. The formalism of the quantum mechanics is unitary and deterministic. Nevertheles, when one does measurements, the unitary process of the evolution of wave-function breaks due to a stochastic abruption. The results of the measurements are in correspondence with the everyday experience of the observer. Yet, the theory itself does not...

Consciousness in Quantum View: An Inspection of Stapp and Penrose Viewpoints

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Salehi, Maryam (Author) ; Shafiee, Afshin (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In order to study the phenomenon of consciousness, many physicists have presented their views. In this thesis, the phenomenon of consciousness is analyzed from Henrry Stapp and Penrose-Hameroffs’ viewpoints. Assuming the subjective reduction of state vector, Stapp considers conscious mind as prerequisite for the reduction of wave function. In his view, consciousness is a selection agent which has a top-level control over brain stimulations, and every conscious experience is the feeling of the top-level event in the brain. He also considers physical world as a structure of tendencies and probabilities. He speaks about creative events which occur among Heisenberg probability distributions. On...

Investigation of Atrium Shape Influence on Natural Ventilation Performance & CFD Model

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Shafiee, Ali (Author) ; Moosavi, Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In modern era, standpoints about atrium design have been revolutionized. In modern architecture, atrium not only designed for illuminating purposes but also designed by natural ventilation and passive cooling policies. Numerous parameters are making role in thermal efficiency of Atrium. A couple of these parameters are Atrium shape and openings area. In high rise atria the lower level rooms enjoy the advantage of buoyancy-driven ventilation while the upper level rooms suffer from its lack or weak presence. One strategy to solve this problem is designing building with various opening area in different heights but manipulating the opening size is restricted by some facts. Excessive Opening’s...

Comparison between decoherence time for a two-state spin 1/2 system with its corresponding quantum retrieval period

    , Article Central European Journal of Physics ; Volume 9, Issue 6 , 2011 , Pages 1410-1420 ; 18951082 (ISSN) Shafiee, A ; Tirandaz, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
The evolution of a two-state quantum system (a spin 1/2 particle) in both the framework of standard quantum mechanics and under the decoherence regime is considered. The former approach on this issue is the well-known quantum flipping process of a dichotomic system subjected to a time-dependent magnetic field. In the latter approach, the Spin-Boson model is utilized to describe the interaction of system with its environment and the Born-Markov master equation is derived to obtain the decoherence time. It is possible to show that under certain conditions, one may find a potential conflict between the predictions of decoherence theory and the result observed in a typical quantum flipping...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Esmaeeli, Mazaher (Author) ; Shafiee, Afshin (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Regarding the notable progress in communication and competition theories as well as natural sciences, the study of the concepts of information has displayed more attention in recent years.Information, entropy and energy are interrelated concepts. In one hand one can infer that entropy is a quantitation measure of information and on the other hand systems which carry information can accumulated energy. Here, we are going to survey the qualitation as well as quantitation aspects of information with concentration on the behavior of chemical agents as information processors

On the Relationship between Mind and Matter from Quantum Perspective

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Tamassoki, Abouzar (Author) ; Shafiee, Afshin (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In the present era consciousness problem and the relationship between mind and matter as one of the historical and difficult philosophical issues has entered in different scientific fields such as neuroscience, cognitive science and physics. With the introduction of quantum theory and offering its different interpretations, some claimed that understanding the consciousness problem will be possible in the light of quantum theory and some claimed that consciousness is necessary for correct understanding of the quantum theory. Henry Stapp and David Bohm, two prominent physicists with two different approaches to quantum theory try to describe this problem from their point of view. Henry Stapp...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Shafiee, Raziyeh (Author) ; Daneshgar, Amir (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this thesis, we study some features and constructions methods for the Petersen and the Coxeter graphs. We survey some properties of these graphs which are based on graph theory, combinatorics, algebra or geometry. From a combinatorial point of view, two new constructions are proposed for the Petersen graph. We also propose two new construction methods for the Coxeter graph called Cylindrical-voltage construction and Block construction, inspired by the methods proposed for the Petersen graph

A Neural Network Based Model for Cost Estimation of Industrial Building at the Project's Definition phase

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Shafiee, Alireza (Author) ; Alvanchi, Amin (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Annually there are many small-scale industry projects implemented in Iran, most of which are financed by local financial institutes. The financing agreements between project owners and financial institutes are usually formed and finalized during the initiation phase and are based on feasibility studies done at the early stages; before project design and construction begin. However, in many cases actual costs of projects exceed the costs estimated in feasibility studies which have been approved by financial institutes. Limited financial resources in the country, from one side, and the lengthy process of increasing the project financing limit, from another side, cause delays in the project...

Calculation of Quantum Transition Probabilities between Codons and Concept of Biological Information

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Ghasemi, Fatemeh (Author) ; Shafiee, Afshin (Supervisor)
    Abstract
It has been about a century since the introduction of the theory of quantum mechanics. This theory is a branch of physics that describes the behavior of nature in very small scales and microscopic systems . Since no quantum system is entirely isolated from its surroundings , it is necessary to study their interactions with the environment to understand them accurately. The theory of open quantum systems provides the theoretical and conceptual framework needed to consider these interactions. Then using the appropriate quantum operations , the evolution of the combined system can be investigated. Moreover , considering the environmental effects, some quantum features such as dissipation...
