Using distance on the Riemannian manifold to compare representations in brain and in models

    , Article NeuroImage ; Volume 239 , 2021 ; 10538119 (ISSN) Shahbazi, M ; Shirali, A ; Aghajan, H ; Nili, H ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Representational similarity analysis (RSA) summarizes activity patterns for a set of experimental conditions into a matrix composed of pairwise comparisons between activity patterns. Two examples of such matrices are the condition-by-condition inner product and correlation matrix. These representational matrices reside on the manifold of positive semidefinite matrices, called the Riemannian manifold. We hypothesize that representational similarities would be more accurately quantified by considering the underlying manifold of the representational matrices. Thus, we introduce the distance on the Riemannian manifold as a metric for comparing representations. Analyzing simulated and real fMRI...

    Elsevier B.V  2020
    Abstract
An assessment of trends in main air pollutant concentrations (including CO, SO2, NO2, O3, PM2.5, and Asbestos) is conducted for the years 2005–2016 for the city of Tehran, Iran. The focus has been on the contribution of anthropogenic emissions to the observed trend, particularly the role of related mitigation plans implemented in the period of interest. A significant decreasing trend (about 50%) was observed in CO and SO2 concentrations during the considered time interval, which was explained by improvement plans in fuel quality and vehicle emission standards. While a substantial elevation (more than 50%) in NO2 levels was detected over the study period, variant trends were observed during...

    Abstract
This work proposes a novel deep learning-based model for prediction of epileptic seizures using multichannel EEG signals. Multichannel images are first constructed by applying short-time Fourier transform (STFT) to Electroencephalography (EEG) signals. After a preprocessing step, a CNN-LSTM neural network is trained on the STFTs in order to capture the spectral, spatial and temporal features within and between the EEG segments and classify them as preictal or interictal stage. The proposed method achieves a sensitivity of 98.21%, a false prediction rate (FPR) of 0.13/h and a mean prediction time of 44.74 minutes on the CHB-MIT dataset. As the main contribution of this work, by using a...

    Abstract
This paper focuses on developing a new method that represents user-accessible correlation for the estimation of water-based nanofluids viscosity. For this, an evolutionary algorithm, namely Gene Expression Programming (GEP), was adapted based on a wide selection of literature published databanks including 819 water-based nanofluids viscosity points. The developed model utilized the base fluid viscosity as well as volume fraction and size of the nanoparticles as the inputs of the model. Several statistical parameters integrated with graphical plots were employed in order to assess the accuracy of the proposed GEP-based model. Results of the evaluation demonstrate fairly enough accuracy of the...

    Abstract
The widespread application of deep sub-micron and multilayer routing techniques makes the interconnection parasitic influence become the main factor to limit the performance of VLSI circuits. Therefore, fast and accurate 3D capacitance extraction is essential for ultra deep sub-micron design (UDSM) of integrated circuits. Parallel processing provides an approach to reducing the simulation turn-around time. In this paper, we present parallel formulations for 3D capacitance extraction based on P-FFT algorithm, on a personal computer (PC) or on a network of PCs. We implement both vector and parallel versions of 3D capacitance extraction algorithm simultaneously and evaluate our implementation...

    Valence bond phases in S = 1/2 Kane-Mele-Heisenberg model

    , Article Journal of Physics Condensed Matter ; Vol. 26, issue. 45 , 2014 ; ISSN: 09538984 Zare, M. H ; Mosadeq, H ; Shahbazi, F ; Jafari, S. A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2014
    Abstract
The phase diagram of the Kane-Mele-Heisenberg model in a classical limit [47] contains disordered regions in the coupling space, as the result of competition between different terms in the Hamiltonian, leading to frustration in finding a unique ground state. In this work we explore the nature of these phases in the quantum limit, for a S = 1/2. Employing exact diagonalization in Sz and nearest neighbour valence bond bases, and bond and plaquette valence bond mean field theories, we show that the disordered regions are divided into ordered quantum states in the form of plaquette valence bond crystals and staggered dimerized phases

    Abstract
In today's world, control and navigation of autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) are quite challenging issues. In these fields, obtaining an identified dynamic model of AUV is a vital part. In this paper, a method for parameter estimation of an AUV planar model is proposed, which uses augmented state space technique and Square Root Transformed Unscented Kalman Filter (SR-TUKF) as an estimator. Furthermore, by modeling, misalignment between Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) and Doppler Velocity Log (DVL) is estimated, simultaneously. Parameter identification is conducted using data of an AUV, equipped with Gyroscope, DVL and Encoder for measuring control inputs, in a planar maneuver. According...

    Abstract
Electrification of energy systems, including an increased percentage of electric vehicles on the road, is one of the primary paths to achieve zero carbon emissions. However, a reduced share of fossil fuel in transportation and industry requires a significant shift in power generation energy sources. Power generation from renewable sources is still limited and will be for the foreseeable future. Developing countries and oil-producing nations in the middle east may shift to electric vehicles, but electricity energy sources will not be easily moved to renewables., A detailed and comprehensive emission inventory was developed in a bottom-up method for a typical populated city in Iran,...

    Abstract
Fast and accurate fault detection is the primary step and one of the most important tasks in fault tolerant converters. In this paper, a fast and simple method is proposed to detect and diagnosis the faulty cell in a cascaded H-bridge multilevel inverter under a short circuit fault. In this method, the reference voltage is calculated using switching control pulses and DC-Link voltages. The comparison result of the output voltage and the reference voltage is used in conjunction with active cell pulses to detect the faulty cell. To achieve this goal, the cell which is active when the Fault signal turns to “0” is detected as the faulty cell. Furthermore, consideration of generating the active...
