, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology ; Shahrokhian, Saeed (Supervisor)
Abstract
The existence of safe and sufficient water is of paramount importance for life on Earth and the survival of humankind. Although two-thirds of the Earth's surface is covered with water, the current demand for fresh water has not been met through these readily available sources for various reasons, including the salinity and hardness of surface waters. In the meantime, the continuous growth of the human population and emerging needs in industry and agriculture have increasingly raised the demand for water resources. Accessible freshwater resources such as rivers, groundwater, and lakes account for only a small portion of the total freshwater reserve. Therefore, today, desalination and...

Abstract
In parallel to the depletion of potable water reservoirs, novel technologies have been developed for seawater softening, as it is the most abundant source for generating deionized water. Although salt removal at subosmotic pressures and ambient temperatures by applying low-operating potentials with high energy efficiency made capacitive deionization (CDI) an advantageous water-softening process, its practical application is limited by insufficient ion removal capacity and low concentration influent. The performance of a CDI system is in progress with engineering the electrode active materials, also facilitating the advance design in highly saline- and seawater study. Herein, an innovative...
On the importance of gel rigidity and coverage in a smart water shutoff treatment in gas wells
, Article Journal of Natural Gas Science and Engineering ; Volume 31 , 2016 , Pages 808-818 ; 18755100 (ISSN) ; Escrochi, M ; Riazi, M ; Ayatollahi, S ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
This paper addresses a conceptual study on different aspects of a novel smart treatment method for a relatively new challenge of saline water production from low permeability lenses of high flow gas wells. Selective sealing of such lenses along with minor effect on gas productivity usually faces practical difficulties due to the inherent permeability contrast. Engineered application of salt sensitive gellan biopolymer through a smart treatment scenario that includes a protective gas flow proved its ability for treating such challenge. This paper investigates the importance of the gel rigidity and its coverage in the smart treatment scenario through considering the brine salinity and the...
Evaluating the Effect of Using a Customized Logistics Service on Sellers' Performance in Online Marketplace
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Sepehri, Mehran (Supervisor) ; Khalili Nasr, Arash (Supervisor)
Abstract
The prosperity of online marketplaces depends on their ability to attract and keep sellers besides customers. Due to the lack of research in evaluating the role of sellers in this business model, the study tries to fill this gap through examining the effect of logistics capability on sellers' performance in an online marketplace. Specifically, a research model is developed to evaluate the effect of a customized logistics service, provided by the intermediary, on sellers' performance in the marketplace. In addition, the indirect effect of logistics capability as a mediator is examined on the previous causal link. Strong empirical support for the research model is provided by data from 1546...
Experimental Study of Drying and Calcination of Simulated High-Level Waste (HLW)
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Samadfam, Mohammad (Supervisor) ; Zahakifar, Fazel (Supervisor) ; Zaheri, Parisa (Co-Supervisor)
Abstract
One of the novel methods of stabilization of nuclear waste is the use of vitrification technology. In order to stabilize high level wastes (HLLW) in glass, it is required that the elements are in their oxide form. Therefore, it is necessary to evaporate the waste and turn it into a solid form so that the elements can be converted into oxide form in the calcination furnace. Hence, one of the challenges of stabilization is the optimization of evaporation and calcination conditions. In this research, the parameters affecting evaporation were first investigated. Using laboratory measurements of application: temperature (110 to 180 °C), presence of nitric acid (0.5 to 4 mol/L), ratio of zirconium...
The Study of Effective Parameters on Thorium Extraction by Cyanex 272 in an Emulsion Liquid Membrane System
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Samadfam, Mohammad (Supervisor) ; Zaheri, Parisa (Supervisor) ; Zahakifar, Fazel (Co-Supervisor)
Abstract
This study used the emulsion liquid membrane method to investigate the extraction and separation of thorium from nitrate solution. According to the results obtained from the studies, Cyanex 272 was a suitable option for selectively extracting thorium. For simultaneous extraction and stripping of thorium from dilute aqueous solutions, an emulsion liquid membrane system consisting of Cyanex 272 as an extractant, Span 80 as a surfactant and sulfuric acid solution as a receiving phase (internal phase) was used. Emulsion liquid membrane method has high mass transfer flux due to high surface to volume ratio, which causes high extraction efficiency and fast transfer of thorium ions from its low...

Abstract
In the present research, the effects of spot-welding process parameters on the nugget diameter and electrode penetration depth of spot-welded joints were investigated. To achieve this, a spot-welded joint of three-thin sheet low carbon steels (same thicknesses of 0.8 mm) was simulated as an electerical-thermal-mechanical coupling of 3D finite element model. After validating the finite element simulation presented in this study by comparison with the experimental results for the spot diameter, various cases of spot welds were analyzed based on the design on experiment (i.e., Taguchi method). Six variables including electrode force, electric current, and quadrilateral times (squeeze, up-slope,...
Fabrication Patient-Specific Drill Guide Templates for Cervical Pedicle Screw Placement
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Arjmand, Navid (Supervisor) ; Parnianpour, Mohammad (Supervisor) ; Azimi, Parisa (Co-Supervisor)
Abstract
One of the most common spinal surgeries involves spinal fusion or vertebral fixation, which is used to treat various conditions such as intervertebral disc disease, scoliosis (lateral deviation of the spinal column), fractures, infections, or the presence of tumors in the spinal column. In this surgical procedure, the use of pedicle screws and titanium rods prevents motion and friction between two vertebrae. Screws may enter the vertebrae in the wrong position and angle, causing bone weakening, rupture of nerve roots or blood vessels, weakness or lack of sensation in some parts of the body, spinal cord injury, and in severe cases, paralysis of the patient. For this reason, fusion surgery is...

Abstract
Echo and sound resonance in a conference room cause obscure speech and make listeners tired. Thus, the acoustical properties of a conference room are vitally important. The conference room 412 at Sharif University Physics Department failed to meet basic acoustical standards. The aim of this research is to improve reverberation time (RT) of the conference room using Helmholtz resonators with defined dimensions, diffusers, and sound absorbers. Helmholtz resonators are widely used to absorb sound noise especially at low frequencies. They are particularly useful when noise has a narrow-frequency band. One of the advantages of using Helmholtz resonators is their capacity to be tuned on different...
