Abstract
Low back pain (LBP), the leading cause of disability worldwide, remains one of the most common and challenging occupational musculoskeletal disorders. The effective assessment of LBP injury risk, and the design of appropriate treatment modalities and rehabilitation protocols, require accurate estimation of the mechanical spinal loads during different activities. This study aimed to: 1) develop a novel 2D beam-column finite element control-based model of the lumbar spine and compare its predictions for muscle forces and spinal loads to those resulting from a geometrically-matched equilibrium-based model; 2) test, using the foregoing control-based finite element model, the validity of the...

Abstract
The conventional Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) bone cement is not biodegradable and not bioactive to bond with the native bone and causes tissue necrosis resulting from its high exothermic polymerization. Hence, biodegradable bioactive bone cements with suitable setting time and mechanical properties should be introduced. In this study, novel bioactive bone cements containing Calcium Sulfate Hemihydrate (CSH), Bioactive Glass (BG), and Tricalcium Silicate (TSC) were developed. Firstly, CSH and BG binary system was optimized based on preliminary setting and mechanical tests. Secondly, the composite bioactive bone cements were obtained by adding different quantities of TCS to the optimized...
Studying the Problems Related to Latin Bitrades and 2-Simultaneous Coloring
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Mahmoodian, Ebadollah (Supervisor)
Abstract
In the year 1997, at 16th British Combinatorial Conference Cameron introduced a new concept called 2-simultaneous coloring. He used this concept to reformulate a conjecture of Keedwell on the existence of critical partial Latin squares of a given type. After that, other people studied special cases of this conjecture. They also studied the relation between this conjecture and other well-known conjectures in Combinatorics, such as Cycle Double Cover Conjecture (CDC). Finally, in 2004 the general case of this conjecture was proven. In first two sections, in addition to defining some fundamental concepts, we represent the relation between Latin trade and 2-simultaneous coloring. Afterwards, by...

Abstract
In this thesis, Particle Filter Methods are investigated in the context of moving targets tracking and the associated performance analysis. The application scope of this algorithm which is a particular case of Sequential Monte Carlo Method is far broader than tracking of moving targets. This algorithm can be used for mathematical calculations such as estimation of mathematical expectations, integrals, surface area of curves and many other mathematical calculations. In addition, it has applications in other branches of science like genetics. This algorithm is based on random sampling of a probability density function and resampling from the extracted samples. We change this algorithm in...

Abstract
Energy efficiency is one of the main pathways for energy security and environmental protection. In fact, the International Energy Agency asserts that without energy efficiency, 70% of targeted emission reductions are not achievable. Despite this clarity, enhancing the energy efficiency introduce significant challenge toward process operation. The reason is that the methods applied for energy-saving pose the process operation at the intersection of safety constraints. The present research aims at uncovering the trade-off between safe operation and energy efficiency; an optimization framework is developed that ensures process safety and simultaneously optimizes energy-efficiency, quantified in...

Abstract
In order to improve the performance of a newly developed radiochromic film, GIC-79, some dosimetric characteristics of this film have been studied based on relevant standard practice. The present study describes some parameters that may affect the dosimeter response before, during, and after irradiation. The effect of absorbed dose rate on dosimeter response was determined by irradiating dosimeters at low absorbed dose rates with gamma rays. Calibration irradiations of dosimeters were performed with both gamma rays and also electrons to determine the effect of large difference absorbed dose rates on dosimeter response. In addition, post irradiation stability was obtained and also the...

Abstract
This paper presents a novel stochastic planning framework for the integration of renewable distributed energy resources (DERs) into existing power systems without relying on new investments in the transmission networks. The upper-level problem of the proposed model aims at minimizing the total expected social cost of supplying demand that includes the expected cost of getting energy from conventional generating units and DERs, the congestion cost of transmission networks, and the greenhouse gas (GHG) emission cost, while each of the privately invested DER satisfies a specified rate of return. The lower-level problem clears the electricity market to find locational marginal prices (LMPs) and...

Abstract
This paper presents a novel transactive energy (TE) management model for real-time coordination of plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) in the distribution network. The proposed model employs the flexibility of PEV charging through a TE market platform to reduce the total cost, voltage unbalances, and distribution transformers' loss of life. In the proposed TE market model, the PEV owners send the information of the required reimbursement for the response and the target level of state-of-charge at departure to the retailer. Then, the retailer runs an optimization problem to determine the scheduling of PEVs by minimizing the total cost including the cost of exchanging energy with upstream grid...

Abstract
The main concern of steganography (image hiding) methods is to embed a secret image into a host image in such a way that it causes minimum distortion to the host; to make it possible to extract a version of secret image from the host in such a way that the extracted version of secret image be as similar as possible to its original version (this should be possible even after usual attacks on the host image), and to provide ways of embedding secret images with larger size into a given host image. In this paper we propose a method that covers all above mentioned concerns by suggesting the idea of finding from an image data base, the most suitable host for a given secret image. In our method,...

Abstract
The main concern of steganography (image hiding) methods is to embed a secret image into a host image in such a way that the host should remain as similar as possible to its original version. In addition the host image should remain robust with respect to usual attacks. In this paper we present a method that tries to cover all above mentioned concerns. The secret and host images are divided into blocks of size 4 × 4. Each block in secret image is taken as a texture pattern for which the most similar block is found among the blocks of the host image. The embedding procedure is carried on by replacing these small blocks of the secret image with blocks in host image in such a way that least...

Abstract
Greenhouse gas emissions from anthropogenic sources are believed to be the main cause of global warming and climate change. Furthermore, fossil fuels are forecasted to remain the dominant source of energy in the near future. Therefore, capture and sequestration of greenhouse gases and in particular carbon dioxide is likely to be a major pathway toward environmental protection and energy sustainability. Such clarity has stimulated an intense and diverse range of research into various capture and mitigation technologies, which race with global warming in real-time. Quantification of the performance improvement rates of these technologies can inform decision-makers' long-term investment...

Abstract
Social business is a type of business whose first priority is to influence and solve a social problem, and unlike commercial businesses, the second priority is to maximize profits. This type of business sees earning money as a means to sustain itself and increase social impact. According to this definition, the mission of social businesses has a dual nature that these businesses are trying to achieve a balanced balance between both social and economic aspects of their mission. Leading research seeks to focus on social businesses within Iran to address how these businesses manage the tensions that arise from their dual mission. This research has tried to use the communication network approach...
Free Vibration Analysis of a Functionally Graded Nanotube Under an Initial Stress Using Nonlocal Elasticity Theory
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Eskandari, Morteza (Supervisor)
Abstract
In this study, flexural vibration of a functionally graded nanotube under an initial stress is investigated. The small scale effect is taken into consideration based on Eringen’s nonlocal elasticity theory. The material properties are assumed to vary exponentially along the depth direction. The complete effect of the initial stress is taken into account in the problem formulation. The governing equations of motion are derived by using the Hamilton’s principle on the basis of the nonlocal Timoshenko beam theory. An analytical solution of the governing equations, for free vibration of a simply-supported nanotube is presented. Numerical results are presented to investigate the effect of the...
Macrostructure and Mechanical Properties of Structural Composite of Aluminum and Stainless Steel Net Processed by Casting and Rolling
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Akbarzadeh, Abbas (Supervisor)
Abstract
Having the high strength to weight ratio has been made the composites special materials very important these days. The low density of aluminum and its appropriate corrosion properties make it a good choice for metallic matrix. Also, the high tensile strength of stainless steel fibers can helps as a reinforcement in the composite to improve its mechanical properties. Enhancing the bonding of composite’s components can helps it to develop its properties. Casting is an appropriate process for making an aluminum matrix containing steel fibers as reinforcement in a structural composite. In addition, rolling process can remove so many defects made by casting, and improve joining of fibers and...

An All-Optical NoC with Multicasting Capability
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Hesabi, Shahin (Supervisor)
Abstract
The importance of power consumption in high performance multiprocessors, combined with power reduction capability of on-chip optical interconnects, offers optical network-on-chip (ONoC) as a new technology solution which can deliver considerably higher bandwidth and lower latencies with significantly lower power dissipation than an interconnection network based only on electronic signaling. An on-chip network should be able to support multicast communications efficiently whether it is an optical or electrical network. On the other hand, multicast communications in optical networks-on-chip has been implemented using shared bus which is not scalable. Moreover, most of optical on-chip...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Ebrahimi Brojeni, Javad (Supervisor)
Abstract
let Mn n be a positive semmi definite matrix and M:= (U; B) be a matroid. Consider the problem of finding S 2 B such that det(MS;S) is maximized, in witch MS; S is the submatrix of M, restricted to rows and columns of S. This problem has a variety of applications including page ranking algorithms. The problem above is an NP-hard problem in the general case. However, there are several approximating and estimating algorithms for some special cases, which are interesting. Also, exactly solving the problem is NP-hard, even for some special matroids. As an example, one can consider the uniform matroids. Khachiyan introduced a greedy algorithm with dd approximation factor. Afterward, Di summa et...
