Optimization of Dynamic Performance of Gas Transmission Networks

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Ahmadian Behrooz, Hesam (Author) ; Bozorgmehry, Ramin (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this work, a non-isothermal model of natural gas in pipelines including mass, momentum and energy balance equations are used as model equations for modeling and state estimation in gas pipeline systems. An algorithm is proposed to handle the discontinuities that appear in the dynamic model of a GTN. The states of GTN are estimated using the continuous/discrete form of the extended Kalman filter for two benchmarks and some heuristic rules for sensor placement in a GTN are concluded. Also, a framework for distributed and decentralized state estimation in high-pressure and long-distance gas transmission networks (GTNs) is proposed. Some heuristic rules are suggested for system decomposition...

    Abstract
In this paper, a framework for distributed and decentralized state estimation in high-pressure and long-distance gas transmission networks (GTNs) is proposed. The non-isothermal model of the plant including mass, momentum and energy balance equations are used to simulate the dynamic behavior. Due to several disadvantages of implementing a centralized Kalman filter for large-scale systems, the continuous/discrete form of extended Kalman filter for distributed and decentralized estimation (DDE) has been extended for these systems. Accordingly, the global model is decomposed into several subsystems, called local models. Some heuristic rules are suggested for system decomposition in gas pipeline...

    Abstract
In this paper, a non-isothermal model of natural gas in pipelines including mass, momentum and energy balance equations are used as model equations for modeling and state estimation in gas pipeline systems. It is shown that differential equations describing the dynamic behavior of a high-pressure and long-distance gas transmission network (GTN) can be solved efficiently using the orthogonal collocation method. The issues corresponding to the presence of discontinuities in the dynamic model is substantially discussed and studied. The non-isothermal model of a GTN can experience discontinuities during transient operations, which causes challenges in simulation and state estimation in this...

Dynamic optimization of natural gas networks under customer demand uncertainties

    , Article Energy ; Volume 134 , 2017 , Pages 968-983 ; 03605442 (ISSN) Ahmadian Behrooz, H ; Bozorgmehry Boozarjomehry, R ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In natural gas transmission networks, the efficiency of daily operation is strongly dependent on our knowledge about the customer future demands. Unavailability of accurate demand forecasts makes it more important to be able to characterize the loads and quantify the corresponding uncertainty. A planning strategy for natural gas transmission networks under future demand uncertainty is addressed, which involves coupling of a gas transmission network dynamic simulator with the stochastic optimization framework. Loads from a gas-fired power plant are studied where the loads are characterized by a number of uncertain parameters, and unscented transform is utilized for uncertainty propagation....

Prediction of limiting activity coefficients for binary vapor-liquid equilibrium using neural networks

    , Article Fluid Phase Equilibria ; Volume 433 , 2017 , Pages 174-183 ; 03783812 (ISSN) Ahmadian Behrooz, H ; Bozorgmahry Boozarjomehry, R ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The activity coefficient at infinite dilution is a representative of the limiting non-ideality of a solute in a mixture. Various methods for the prediction of infinite dilution activity coefficients (IDACs) have been developed. Artificial neural networks are powerful mapping tools for nonlinear function approximations. Accordingly, an artificial neural network model is proposed for the prediction of the IDACs of binary systems where the properties of the individual components are used as inputs to the network. The input parameters of the neural network are the mixture temperature, critical temperature, critical pressure, critical volume, molecular weight, dipole moment and the acentric...

    Abstract
The kinetic experiments for the reaction of synthesis gas to light olefin over CO/Mn/TiO 2 catalyst were carried out in a micro-fixed-bed reactor. Rate expressions for reactions were selected based on the carbide mechanism. A differential reactor model considering both FTS and WGS kinetic models was used to describe the reaction systems. The simulation estimation of proposed kinetic model was conducted with a generic algorithm. This is an abstract of a paper presented at the 8th World Congress of Chemical Engineering (Montréal, Quebec, Canada 8/23-27/2009)

The effect of operation variables, such as the H2/CO molar feed ratio, gas hourly space velocity (GHSV), temperature, and pressure, on the catalytic performance of the Co/Mn/TiO2 catalyst prepared at the Research Institute of the Petroleum Industry (RIPI) was investigated, and optimum reactor conditions were obtained to produce the maximum amount of light olefins. The catalyst was prepared by co-precipitation of Co and Mn phases in the presence of commercial TiO2 with maximum selectivity for ethylene and propylene production. It was found that the [H2]/[CO]=2/1, space velocity (GHSV) of 1800 h-1, 280°C temperature and 4 bar pressure were optimum operating conditions for the modified catalyst...

Frameworks for the Exploration and Implementation of Generalized Carry-Free Redundant Number Systems

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Jaberipur, Ghassem (Author) ; Ghodsi, Mohammad (Supervisor) ; Parhami, Behrooz (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Redundant number systems provide for carry-free arithmetic, where the result of arithmetic operations is achieved, in redundant format, without the need for latent carry propagation. However conversion of the result to a conventional nonredundant representation, always, requires carry propagation. Therefore, efficient use of redundant number systems is feasible when a series of arithmetic operations is to be performed before the need arises to obtain the result in a nonredundant representation. Redundant number systems have been used in several special purpose integrated designs (e.g., DSP applications) and also as intermediate number representation in complex arithmetic operations...

A Two Stage Hybrid Algorithm for the Optimal Design of Water-Using Networks

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ahmadian Behrooz, Hesam (Author) ; Bozorgmehri, Ramin (Supervisor) ; Rashtchian, Davood (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Industrial water systems often allow efficient water uses via water reuse and/or recirculation. The design of the network layout connecting water-using processes is a complex problem which involves several criteria to optimize. The general problem can be formulated as a non-convex nonlinear program (NLP), but due to the presence of bilinear terms, it may be difficult for local optimization solvers to attain global optimal solutions. To overcome this difficulty, this paper presents a hybrid approach combining the global optimization power of evolutionary algorithms and speed and accuracy of mathematical programming technics.By this strategy, local solutions can be avoided and the...

    Abstract
Recently, super gas wet and gas wet surfaces have been extensively attended in petroleum industry, as supported by the increasing number of publications in the last decade related to wettability alteration in gas condensate reservoirs. In many cases, contact angle measurement has been employed to assess the wettability alteration. Even though contact angle measurement seems to be a straightforward approach, there exist many misuses of this technique and consequently misinterpretation of the corresponding results. In this regard, a critical inspection of the most recent updated concepts and the intervening parameters in the contact angle based wettability evaluation of liquid-solid-gas...

Corpus-based Analysis of "The Little Prince" and its Translations based on Computational Linguistics

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Habibi Kaseb, Sara (Author) ; Rezaei, Saeed (Supervisor) ; Mahmoodi Bakhtiari, Behrooz ($item.subfieldsMap.e)
    Abstract
Concepts and ideas of a society, formed by its discourse and ideology, are mainly manifested through language. Therefore, language has always been the subject of studies and research of many scholars such as linguists. As the languages of different countries are different, in order to transfer the thoughts of a writer, a deep examination of the source text as well as the translation of the work itself seems to be of much importance. Since translation is not an independent phenomenon and depends on the interpreter's perception, it is in relation with ideological concepts and power like the work itself. In order to be able to examine the structural effects of a work on the foundation of the...

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Shayegh, Flora (Author) ; Ghotbi, Siroos (Supervisor) ; Bozorg Mehri, Ramin (Supervisor) ; Zarrinpashne, Saeid (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Synthesis gas to light olefin reactions especially propylene production is one of the important path for clean fuel production in gas conversion processes. The object of this study is to define true kinetic model of process first step (e.g. Synthesis gas to light Olefins). For that, kinetic model for Co/Mn/TiO2 catalyst, which has the best conversion and selectivity for propylene, has been developed. Kinetic reaction parameters were measured by kinetic modeling in (220-300)0C temperature , (1-5)bar pressure , H2/CO=(1:3) and (450-600)hr-1 space velocity .After studying with significant models ,the best fitting can obtained with "KPCO P 1/2H2/(1+aPco+bPH2 1/2)2"equation. , M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Abdollahi, Yaser (Author) ; Mousavi, Abbas (Supervisor) ; Bastani, Darioush (Supervisor) ; Sadatnia, Behrooz (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
Because of higher hydrogen demand in recent years, study of hydrogen separation from gas mixtures is highly regarded. Because of some parameters such as high surface to volume ratio and ability to withstanding high pressure, polymeric hollow fiber membranes have a good potential of hydrogen recovery. So in this study, fabrication of single-layer and dual-layer hollow fiber membranes have been investigated. Selective polymer that used in both single and dual layer membranes is polyethersulfone. Membranes were fabricated by dry-wet phase inversion method and effects of extrusion rates and their ratio, composition and temperature of polymer solution, composition of bore fluid, coating and air...
