    Abstract
The effective constitutive parameters of a three-dimensional periodic structure are calculated using its Bloch modes. These modes and their propagation constants are obtained from eigenvectors and eigenvalues of the generalized transfer matrix of a unit layer of the structure. Effective bulk permittivity and permeability tensors of the medium are obtained when two of the Bloch modes are dominant, i.e., propagate without significant decay inside the medium. The effect of the strongly decaying Bloch modes, which are excited at the interface with a conventional medium, are included by means of surface impedance matrices. The results are in excellent agreement with full-wave electromagnetic...

Extraction of Effective Bulk and Surface Parameters of Three Dimensional Artificial Media Using Bloch Modes

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Sheikh Ansari, Abbas (Author) ; Rejaei, Behzad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Artificial periodic mediums such as metamaterials or photonic crystals have been intensively studied in recent years due to their unique characteristics and the ability to control their effective electromagnetic parameters. Developing accurate methods for the extraction of these parameters is highly desirable, given the potential application of artificial materials in optical and microwave devices. In this thesis a new method is presented for computing the effective bulk and surface parameters of three-dimensional artificial periodic materials. The effective, bulk permeability and permittivity tensors are shown to be directly related to the eigenvectors of the generalized transfer matrix of...

    Abstract
The physics and modes of radiation in structures exhibiting extraordinary transmission (ET) can be best studied using Green's function formalism. In this article, we find the electromagnetic response to local excitation of a canonical structure exhibiting ET, and investigate the role of complex waves. The structure is a perfectly conducting slab having a finite or infinite number of through-slits. The solution breaks up the field into even and odd modes, and solves for the fields of the structure with a finite number of slits, by setting up an integral equation. The solution is then extended to find Greens' function of the infinitely periodic structure. The dispersion relations of the...

    Abstract
Permeability of porous materials is an important characteristic which is extensively used in various engineering disciplines. There are a number of issues that influence the permeability coefficient among which the porosity, size of particles, pore shape, tortuosity, and particle size distribution are of great importance. In this paper a C++ GPU code based on three-dimensional lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) has been developed and used for investigating the effects of the above mentioned factors on the permeability coefficient of granular materials. Multirelaxation time collision scheme of the LBM equations is used in the simulator, which is capable of modeling the exact position of the...

Empirical predictive model for generating synthetic non-stationary stochastic accelerogram of the Iranian plateau: including far- and near-field effects as well as mainshock and aftershock categorization

    , Article Bulletin of Earthquake Engineering ; Volume 17, Issue 7 , 2019 , Pages 3681-3708 ; 1570761X (ISSN) Khansefid, A ; Bakhshi, A ; Ansari, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Springer Netherlands  2019
    Abstract
This work proposes comprehensive empirical predictive equations for generating stochastic synthetic 3-dimensional accelerograms for the Iranian plateau based on the existing database. First, the databank of Iranian accelerograms is collected, sorted, processed, declustered and categorized into the pulse-like and non-pulse-like data. To simulate the artificial accelerograms, a stochastic model capable of handling both the temporal and spectral non-stationarity of accelerograms is adopted. By implementing nonlinear curve fitting, parameters of the stochastic model are estimated. Then, the recorded events are categorized into eight distinct groups based on the existence of pulse-like...

    Abstract
In this paper, a comprehensive accelerogram database of the Iranian plateau containing 3585 data with all three components is gathered. The raw data are processed by the wavelet-based denoising method, and results are compared with the contaminated data. All the data are classified into mainshock and aftershock categories using the time and spatial window method. Afterward, the data are categorized into the pulse-like and non-pulse-like events based on the detection of velocity pulse in any of horizontal and/or vertical directions. Eventually, among 3585 data, the ones with an average shear wave velocity of top 30 m of subsurface soil profile are selected and their important ground motion...

Effect of organoclay loading and electron beam irradiation on the physico-mechanical properties of low-density polyethylene/ethylene-vinyl acetate blend

    , Article Polymers for Advanced Technologies ; Volume 22, Issue 12 , 2011 , Pages 2352-2359 ; 10427147 (ISSN) Shojaei, A ; Behradfar, A ; Sheikh, N ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
The influence of electron beam (EB) irradiation and organoclay (OC) loading on the properties of low-density polyethylene (LDPE)/ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) blends was investigated. The samples were subjected to the EB irradiation with the dose values of 50 and 250kGy. X-ray diffraction (XRD), gel content, mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties were utilized to analyze the characteristics of the LDPE/EVA blends with and without OC at different irradiation dosages. Gel content analysis showed that the OC promotes considerably the insoluble part so that the LDPE/EVA blends filled with OC become fully crosslinked at 250kGy; possibly through the formation of further crosslinks between...

    Abstract
Attempts were made to trace the effect of organoclay (OC) on the rheological and mechanical behaviors of the low density polyethylene (LDPE)/ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) blends. To do this effectively, in addition to LDPE/EVA/OC system, pure LDPE and LDPE/EVA blends were also examined as model systems. The rheological behavior was determined by the capillary rheometer. Morphological characterization was also carried out using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and theoretical approach based on interfacial energies. Shear viscosity, tensile strength and elastic modulus of LDPE/EVA were found to decrease by increasing the EVA...

    Abstract
Routing is a very important matter for ad hoc networks which means choosing the suitable and correct path for transferring data from a source node to a destination node. Today, the methods using several paths for routing are attended very much. In this paper, a new plan in multiple paths On-Demand Distance Vector (AODV) routing is presented which its routing is based on the distance of nodes from the center of the network. In this new routing algorithm, the number of dropped packets will be decreased and indeed this will be happened with more balancing in the network. This claim will be proved by some simulations using ns2 (network simulator)

In vitro dissolution of plasma-sprayed hydroxyapatite coatings with different characteristics: Experimental study and modeling

    , Article Biomedical Materials ; Volume 3, Issue 1 , 2008 ; 17486041 (ISSN) Mohammadi, Z ; Ziaei Moayyed, A. A ; Sheikh Mehdi Mesgar, A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The dissolution of plasma-sprayed hydroxyapatite (PHA) coatings with different characteristics, produced by various spraying conditions, in a Tris-buffered solution at pH 7.4 was experimentally studied through the measurement of the release of calcium ions. The phase composition of the coatings at surface and interface, and the porosity were evaluated. The analytical modeling revealed that the calcium dissolution process was composed of two stages. The first stage was found to be both surface and diffusion controlled. The second stage was an exactly diffusion-controlled dissolution. In the first stage, the rate of dissolution and the solubility of the coatings with minimum contents of...

Investigation into characteristics of Portevin-Le Chatelier effect of an Al-Mg Alloy

    , Article Journal of Materials Engineering and Performance ; Volume 19, Issue 9 , 2010 , Pages 1264-1267 ; 10599495 (ISSN) Sheikh, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
In this study, the plastic instabilities associated with the Portevin-Le Chatelier (PLC) and their effects on the mechanical properties and the fracture surfaces have been investigated for AA 5083. Tensile tests were performed at various temperatures and strain rates in order to do so. Then, serrated and smooth yielding domains were determined in Ln ε̇-1/T diagram. The stress-strain curves related to the serrated domain show the values of flow stress decreases by increasing the strain rate at a constant temperature. In addition, the plot of critical strain versus imposed strain rate indicates an inverse manner at very low strain rates. It is confirmed that the type of PLC bands alters the...

NHEG mechanics: Laws of near horizon extremal geometry (thermo)dynamics

    , Article Journal of High Energy Physics ; Vol. 2014, issue. 3 , 2014 ; ISSN: 11266708 Hajian, K ; Seraj, A ; Sheikh-Jabbari, M. M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2014
    Abstract
Near Horizon Extremal Geometries (NHEG) are solutions to gravity theories with SL(2, ℝ) × U(1) N (for some N) symmetry, are smooth geometries and have no event horizon, unlike black holes. Following the ideas by R. M. Wald, we derive laws of NHEG dynamics, the analogs of laws of black hole dynamics for the NHEG. Despite the absence of horizon in the NHEG, one may associate an entropy to the NHEG, as a Noether-Wald conserved charge. We work out "entropy" and "entropy perturbation" laws, which are respectively universal relations between conserved Noether charges corresponding to the NHEG and a system probing the NHEG. Our entropy law is closely related to Sen's entropy function. We also...

Peak-power-aware energy management for periodic real-time applications

    Abstract
Two main objectives in designing real-time embedded systems are high reliability and low power consumption. Hardware replication (e.g., standby-sparing) can provide high reliability while keeping the power consumption under control. In this paper, we consider a standby-sparing system where the main tasks on primary cores are scheduled by our proposed peak-power-aware earliest-deadline-first policy while the backup tasks on spare cores are scheduled by our proposed peak-power-aware earliest-deadline-late policy to meet the chip thermal design power (TDP) constraint. These policies provide the best opportunity to shift the task executions as much as possible to minimize execution overlaps...

Tachyonic resonance preheating in an expanding universe

    , Article Physical Review D - Particles, Fields, Gravitation and Cosmology ; Volume 81, Issue 4 , 2010 ; 15507998 (ISSN) Abolhasani, A. A ; Firouzjahi, H ; Sheikh Jabbari, M. M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
In this paper the tachyonic resonance preheating generated from the bosonic trilinear χ2 interactions in an expanding universe is studied. In λ 4/4 inflationary model the trilinear interaction, in contrast to the four-legs 2χ2, breaks the conformal symmetry explicitly and the resonant source term becomes nonperiodic, making the Floquet theorem inapplicable. We find that the occupation number of the produced χ particles has a nonlinear exponential growth with exponent ∼x3/2, where x is the conformal time. This should be contrasted with preheating from a periodic resonant source arising, for example, from the four-legs 2χ2 interaction, where the occupation number has a linear exponential...

    Abstract
Background: A speller system enables disabled people, specifically those with spinal cord injuries, to visually select and spell characters. A problem of primary speller systems is that they are gaze shift dependent. To overcome this problem, a single Rapid Serial Visual Presentation (RSVP) paradigm was initially introduced in which characters are displayed one-by-one at the center of a screen. New method: Two new protocols, Dual and Triple shifted RSVP paradigms, are introduced and compared against the single paradigm. In the Dual and Triple paradigms, two and three characters are displayed at the center of the screen simultaneously, holding the advantage of displaying the target character...

    Abstract
A set of transforms (SVD transforms) were introduced in (Shahshahani and Tavakoli Targhi) for understanding images. These transforms have been applied to some problems in computer vision including segmentation, detection of objects in a texture environment, classification of textures, detection of cracks or other imperfections, etc. This technique is shown to be applicable to determination of the location of eyes in a facial image. This method makes no use of color cues, prior geometric knowledge or other assumptions and does not require training. It is also insensitive to local perturbations in lighting, change of orientation and pose, scaling, and complexity of the background including...

    Abstract
A new method to evaluate the steady state performance of a three-phase self excited induction generator based on conductance minimization is proposed. It can be simply used to take series compensation into account. Among the priorities of this method are the absence of convergence problem and flexibility. Simple methods to find the frequency and magnetizing reactance have been proposed. Simulation results show the efficiency of this method
