    Abstract
In the present study, an aqueous root-extract of Acanthophyllum laxiusculum (AREAL) was evaluated for phenanthrene removal from two samples of contaminated soil. AREAL showed a linear solubilization enhancement for phenanthrene with a weight solubilization ratio of 0.05. Batch soil washing experiments caused the removal of phenanthrene with efficiencies of 96.7% and 78% from soils with 0.78% and 2.73% organic carbon, respectively. Desorption kinetics of phenanthrene exhibited a twophase pattern, namely, a rapid release as the initial phase and a slower removal as a subsequent phase. A two-compartment exponential model could adequately represent the two phases of the kinetic pattern of...

Aerodynamic Design of Axial Flow Turbine Stage

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Soltaninejad, Mohammad (Author) ; Hajilouy-Benisi, Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Prediction techniques of axial flow turbine performance for different operating conditions are always developing due to high costs and lack of reliable empirical data. In axial gas turbines, fluid flow is three-dimensional, viscous, and highly turbulent. Nowadays, although flow field specifications are predicted accurately well using computational and numerical tools, the appropriate loss models are required for one-dimensional modeling and optimization in early design phases. In this research, an accurate and a complete investigation of aerodynamic losses in axial flow turbines will be discussed. Some suggested models for calculating losses in axial gas turbines, are considered and...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Hosseini, Hajar Sadat (Author) ; Bastani, Dariush (Supervisor) ; Mousavi, Abbas (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this study, membrane distillation was used for desalination of high saline water. Recently, the synthesis of nanoparticles for the synthesis of membranes for membrane distillation has shown incredible improvement in the morphological properties, flux, and rejection. In this study, by incorporating UiO-66 functionalized with Palmitic acid into PVDF/PEG polymer solution we could improve membranes properties. Functionalization of UiO-66 with Palmitic acid was confirmed with FTIR, XRD, BET, SEM. In the membrane containing 3% Palmitic acid-UiO-66, the flux was increased by 46.5%, resulting in a flux of 12.6 LMH, and the salt rejection was improved from 99.5% to 99.9%. These results confirmed...

In Silico Lung-on-a-Chip Simulation for Disease Modeling and Drug Delivery Purposes

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Sarrami, Shadi (Author) ; Bastani, Dariush (Supervisor) ; Mashayekhan, Shohreh (Supervisor) ; Moghadas, Hajar (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
Organ-on-chip microfluidic devices create a three-dimensional and dynamic model that allows researchers to model diseases and test different drug candidates. In this regard, using a lung-on-a-chip microfluidic device, Covid-19 disease was numerically modeled. Initially, the distribution of oxygen concentration in the blood and respiratory membrane in the healthy state; when the respiratory membrane is the only barrier between air and blood; was found and observed that in this case, the length that the blood had to travel to reach full saturation was the same in the alveolar capillaries and the lung-on-a-chip microdevice. Then, to simulate the different phases of the disease, the formation of...

Remediation of Polycyclic Aromatics Hydrocarbons- Containated Soils Using Plant-Derived Biousurfactants

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Soltaninejad, Hajar (Author) ; Yaghmaei, Soheila (Supervisor) ; Bagheri Lotfabad, Tayebe (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Polyaromatic hydrocarbons are toxic compounds generally produced by combustion of explosives and petroleum materials. They cause soil and ground water contamination. PAHs are carcinogenic and lead to serious health problems for human and other living things; hence they should be removed from the environment. Soil washing technique has been one of methods applied for soil treatment during the years and surface active compounds like emulsifiers and surfactants have been introduced into washing process to improve the removal efficiency. On the other hand, synthetic surfactants made of chemicals and petroleum materials are not degradable and remain in the environment. To void this secondary...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Yahyazadeh Shourabi, Arash (Author) ; Saeedi, Mohammad Saeed (Supervisor) ; Hajilouy Benisi, Ali (Supervisor) ; Moghadas, Hajar (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this manuscript, we designed and fabricated a novel integrated microfluidic Kidney Nephron-On-Chip. This chip is able to culture cell monolayers under various fluid shear stresses and divert osmotic pressure gradients while imposing four different concentrations of an injected drug on cells. The multi-layer platform consisting of two bubble-trappers to eliminate all unwanted bubbles from the system, a concentration gradient generator to generate four different concentrations of the injected drug, and a membrane-based cell culture chamber caple of providing renal cells with their in-vivo condition. Using colorimetric techniques, the bubble trapper ability was quantified at flow rates up to...

    Abstract
Highly porous nanocomposites of graphitic-carbon nitride and tin oxide (g-C3N4/SnO2) were prepared through simple pyrolysis of urea molecules under microwave irradiation. The initial amount of tin was varied in order to investigate the effect of SnO2 content on preparation and properties of the composites. The synthesized nanocomposites were well-characterized by XRD, FE-SEM, HR-TEM, BET, FTIR, XPS, DRS, and PL. A homogeneous distribution of SnO2 nanoparticles with the size of less than 10 nm on the porous C3N4 sheets could be obtained, suggesting that in-situ synthesis of SnO2 nanoparticles was responsible for the formation of g-C3N4. The process likely occurred by the aid of the large...

    Abstract
Recently, aluminum titanate (Al2TiO5)-based nanostructures have been proved to serve as an efficient photocatalytic material with satisfactory photodegradation capacity. In this study, the citrate sol–gel method was used to synthesize these nanostructures and inspect the significant impacts of nitrogen-doping-originated crystalline defects on their photocatalytic performance in some details for the first time. The results indicated that the penetration of nitrogen atoms into AT crystal lattice, depending on the nitriding time and temperature, can induce a great deal of the residual stress and result in propagating the existing cracks and breaking down the particles. The XPS and FTIR results...
