    Abstract
Superhydrophobic surfaces demonstrate significant characteristics which make them suitable for a wide variety of applications. In this study, we propose a facile, one-step, and cost-effective anodizing scheme using aluminum nitrate/stearic acid mixture solution to create a superhydrophobic surface on an aluminum mesh. The surface outperforms the surface anodized by the widely used oxalic acid solution in terms of superhydrophobicity and water-surface friction behavior. The proposed surface reduced the friction by 11% on average respective to the surface prepared by oxalic acid. The durability of the introduced superhydrophobic surface has also been investigated. The proposed surface retained...

Lithium Extraction with TiO2 Nanotube Synthesized by Anodizing Method

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Taghvaei, Nastaran (Author) ; Askari, Masoud (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Due to the technology advancement and the large-scale application of lithium-ion batteries in recent years, the market demand for lithium is growing rapidly and the availability of land lithium resources is decreasing significantly. As such, the focus of lithium extraction technologies has shifted to water lithium resources involving salt-lake brines and sea water. The ion exchange process is a promising method for lithium extraction from brine and seawater having low concentrations of this element. Among various aqueous recovery technologies, the lithium ion-sieve (LIS) technology is considered the most promising one. This is because LISs are excellent adsorbents with high lithium uptake...

Synthesis of anodized TIO2 nanotube arrays as ion sieve for lithium extraction

    Abstract
Titanium type lithium ion-sieve nanotubes synthesized by the hydrothermal method were extensively explored over recent years due to its promising properties. However, on account of nanotubes′ tangled structure impeding the lithium adsorption in the interior nanotube walls, unalterable dimensions of the synthesized nanotubes, and a long period of annealing, the anodizing technique was proposed. It is shown that lithium uptake and adsorption capacity is improved because of easier mass transfer during the ion exchange process. This work focuses on a novel anodizing method for nanotube ion-sieve synthesis. The optimum anodizing condition was discovered by altering anodizing voltage, time, and...

    , Article Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics ; Volume 50, Issue 10 , 2017 ; 00223727 (ISSN) Daeian, M. A ; Moosavi, A ; Nouri Borujerdi, A ; Taghvaei, E ; Sharif University of Technology
    Institute of Physics Publishing  2017
    Abstract
Using the Shan-Chen lattice Boltzmann multi-phase model, we investigate the effect of adding microstructured grooves to the walls of a 2D parallel-plate channel on the pressure drop in the channel. The effects of the size of the grooves on the pressure drop in the channel were considered. It was observed that the pitch of the grooves has a considerable effect on the pressure drop in the channel, and even for some values of the pitch we observe an increase in the pressure drop. As the pitch decreases, a lower pressure drop is achieved. The results also show that as the ratio of the solid-liquid contact surface to the whole surface is decreased, the pressure drop decreases. It is also observed...

    Abstract
Solar collecting area is one of the most important operating parameters of active solar stills. No experimental work has been performed to investigate the effect of this parameter to date. Furthermore in all of previous theoretical studies the effect of solar collecting area was examined during only the first 24-hour period of the operation of stills with one specified brine depth. However the present work experimentally studies the long-term simultaneous effects of collector area and brine depth on the performance of active solar stills. For this purpose four parallel active solar stills with different collector areas were fabricated and experiments were conducted for 5 consecutive days...

    Abstract
We propose a facile and cost effective method for fabricating superhydrophobic surfaces with significant drag reduction in a wide velocity range. A dual structure superhydrophobic aluminum surface with a hydrophobic Al2O3micro- and nanoparticle coating and also another superhydrophobic surface with a nanoparticle layer coating are fabricated. Then, the resulted drag from each of these surfaces is measured carefully in different velocities and compared with the drag of the as-received aluminum surface. Our results reveal that the surface with the dual structure experiences drag reduction in a wider velocity range compared with the nanoparticle coated sample. Drag reduction of the dual...

Genco's Bidding Strategy in Day-Ahead Energy Market Considering Demand Response

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Kazemi, Mostafa (Author) ; Ehsan, Mehdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Since 1980s the electricity market has been gradually evolving from a monopoly market into a liberalized one for encouraging competition and improving efficiency. This brings the opportunity for generation companies (Gencos) to make more profits while embracing more risks of not being dispatched. Therefore, it has become a core interest for the Gencos to develop optimal bidding strategies to maximize the profits and minimize the risks while participating in such a competitive market. Error of determining day-ahead electricity price is one of the sources of the risk. Energy price has a high impact on bidding strategy optimization process. So it should be determined with low error which is not...

    Abstract
Losses are unavoidable in any parts of power systems, from generation to receiving nodes and occur in transmission and distribution networks. However, the main loss component is produced in distribution networks. Energy losses in distribution networks are about 70% of technological transport energy losses.
Energy losses in distribution networks are an important indicator for the planning and operation of the system. A fast, reliable and accurate energy loss calculation method is required for optimal operation of the distribution networks.
Energy loss depends on network's operating conditions. Loads values and loads factors are time variables; therefore, methods based on probability...

    Abstract
Electricity retailers are one of the power market entities which act as an intermediary between the producers in the wholesale market and the consumers in the retail side. The main task of a retailer in the power market is to set contract with the consumers to supply their electricity during a pre-specified time period and to participate in the wholesale market to supply the electricity needed by its costomers. Retailer’s contract with its customers may be a simple contract with a fixed pre-determined energy price or include some more complicated feathures such as involvement of a percent of green energy or variable price and demand response contracts. Moreover, retailer can supply its...
