Fabrication and Optimization of Organic Inorganic Perovskite Solar Cells Using Vapor Phase Deposition
, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology ; Taghavinia, Nima (Supervisor) ; Tajabadi, Fariba (Supervisor)
Abstract
In this research, we focus on study and fabrication of organic inorganic solar cells. We use and optimize various methods such as one-step spin-coating, two-step sequential deposition and vapor-assisted solution process (VASP), to prepare high quality perovskite films. One-step deposition is simplest method for deposition of perovskite films. Although perovskite deposition by this method is very simple, the control of uniformity and surface film morphology is difficult. Chlorine inclusion, optimization of annealing conditions, and a sequential solution-based deposition method have been demonstrated to increase film coverage and uniformity. Hence, we use sequential deposition method for...

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology ; Taghavinia, Nima (Supervisor) ; Tajabadi, Fariba (Supervisor)
Abstract
The use of renewable energy sources has received much attention due to the increasing need for energy, limited energy resources and the pollution of fossil fuels. Among all types of solar energy conversion technology, photovoltaics has the highest technical potential and Iran’s geographical location is very suitable for benefiting from this energy. So, in this thesis, the fabrication and characterization of nanostructured solar cells based on organic-inorganic perovskites have been investigated. Many research goups have tried to increase the efficiency of perovskite solar cells. The efficiency of this kind of solar cells depends mainly on the light-absorbing layer (perovskite) and its...
Printable Carbon Electrode for Perovskite & Thin Film Solar Cells
, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology ; Taghavinia, Nima (Supervisor) ; Tajabadi, Fariba (Supervisor) ; Mohammadpour, Raheleh (Supervisor)
Abstract
Solar cells, as a part of photovoltaics (PV) industry, have a significant share in the renewable energy market. Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) and thin film solar cells (TFSCs) achieved 23% and 22% power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) respectively. However, the PV industry still faces challenges like “high manufacturing costs” and “stability”. Among the strategies to overcome these challenges are substitution of the costly materials with cheaper, more abundant ingredients along with utilizing inexpensive deposition methods like printing rather than vacuum-based methods such as evaporation and sputtering. Carbon materials attract more attention in the solar cell research community for their...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Karimipour, Vahid (Supervisor)
Abstract
Quantum entanglement and superposition are wonderful and mysterious phenomena of quantum mechanics. By means of quantum entanglement, two or more systems become partner in state of each other . As a result, measurements on each of these systems affect the status of other systems. Quantum superposition allows a system inhabits several of its possible quantum states simultaneously. These two features are applicable in many technologies in present age. Photons, as an quantum unit of light, are appropriate candidate for utilization these properties. Because they are robust to decoherence and for their preparation exist various methods. Hence, we interested to generation of quantum states of...
A Study on Action Selection Deficits in Schizophrenic Patients Using Computational Modeling in Reniforcement Learning Framework
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Vosoughi Vahdat, Bijan (Supervisor) ; Bahrami, Fariba (Supervisor)
Abstract
Schizophrenia is a devastating disorder that steals the opportunity of having a normal life from the sufferers. Drugs used in treating this disorder usually target psychotic symptoms and do not affect negative symptoms effectively. One of the deficits falling into this category is the impaired reversal learning. These patients usually learn the rules but do not renounce them after the contingencies of reward have been reversed. To investigate the reasons of this impairment, first a hypothesis of how different parts of the brain communicate during reversal learning is proposed using the physiological evidence. Then considering the known relation between the actor-critic model of the...
TiO 2 fibers enhance film integrity and photovoltaic performance for electrophoretically deposited dye solar cell photoanodes
, Article ACS Applied Materials and Interfaces ; Volume 3, Issue 3 , February , 2011 , Pages 638-641 ; 19448244 (ISSN) ; Rahman, M ; Tajabadi, F ; Taghavinia, N ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
Nanoparticulated TiO 2 fibers as one-dimensional long structures were introduced into TiO 2 P25 nanoparticle films using coelectrophoretic deposition. This prevented the usual crack formation occurring in wet coatings, and resulted in less porosity and higher roughness factor of the films that provided more favorable conditions for electron transport. The films used as the photoanode of a dye solar cell (DSC) produced 65% higher photovoltaic efficiency. TiO 2 fibers can be excellent binders in single-step, organic-free electrophoretic deposition of TiO 2 for DSC photoanode

Abstract
Planar superstrate CuInS2 (CIS) solar cell devices are fabricated using totally solution-processed deposition methods. These Cd-free devices are structured by FTO/TiO2/In2S3/CIS/carbon, where TiO2 and In2S3 are deposited by spray pyrolysis, and a CIS film is deposited using spin-coating followed by annealing at 250 °C. The pasted carbon layer is utilized as the anode. No further sulfurization or selenization is employed. The Cu/In ratio in the ink is found as a critical factor affecting the morphology and crystallinity of the film as well as the photovoltaic performance of the device. An optimum Cu/In = 1.05 results in large-grain films with sharp diffraction peaks and, subsequently, optimal...

Abstract
One of the drawbacks of typical dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs) is their high cost and the high electrical resistance of the transparent conducting substrate. In conventional sandwich-type DSCs, only one of the FTO substrates can be replaced by a metal substrate. We investigated an all-metal-electrode single-sided DSC in which interpenetrated bracken-like Cr electrodes were created using photolithography; mesoporous TiO2 and Pt films were deposited on the laterally separated electrodes. Thermal Pt deposition and electrodeposition methods were investigated and it was found that a cyclic electrodeposition method resulted in selective Pt deposition at room temperature with a higher device...

Abstract
We report a new design of solar cells based on semiconductor quantum dots (QDs), monolithic quantum dot sensitized solar cells (MQDSCs). MQDSCs offer the prospect of having lower cost and a simpler manufacturing process in comparison to conventional double substrate QDSCs. Our proposed monolithic QDSCs have a triple-layer structure, composed of a CdS sensitized mesoporous TiO2 photoanode, a scattering layer made by a core-shell structure of TiO 2/SiO2, and a carbon active/graphite counter electrode layer, which are all deposited on a single fluorine doped tin oxide (FTO) glass substrate. Mesoporous TiO2 was sensitized with CdS QDs by successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction. Here,...

Abstract
Copper indium selenide CuInSe2(CISe) thin films were deposited by chemical spray pyrolysis (CSP) method of CuInS2(CIS) and subsequent selenization process. To study the effects of solution concentration, we prepared different precursors solution of CIS including different amount of indium salts from 0.025 to 0.100 M with In/Cu 1.25 and S/In 4. These results propose that solution concentration is critical for inflecting the morphological, optical, electrical, and electrochemical characteristics of solution-processed CISe films and device performance. The studied morphological properties of deposited samples were homogenous, crack-free with large grains in indium salt concentrations more than...

Abstract
Herein, we deposited CuInSe2(CISe) thin films by using aqueous spray deposition method and post selenization process. The effect of different indium precursor salts including indium chloride, indium nitrate and indium acetate on the structural, morphological, optical and electrical properties of sprayed CISe layers has been studied by using x-ray diffraction (XRD), Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM-EDS), optical transmission (UV–Vis), Mott-Schottky analysis, I–V dark measurements. Although all the deposited thin films show a chalcopyrite tetragonal ordering structure of CISe, the crystallinity, morphology, and electrical characteristics are strongly influenced by the type of...

Abstract
We introduce an effective method for copper indium sulfide selenide (CISSe) doping with different alkali metals (Li, Na and K) based on a pre-deposited alkali chloride layer. A simple and fast spray method is used for pre-deposition of alkali chloride layer (LiCl, NaCl, KCl) on substrate surface before spray pyrolysis deposition of copper indium disulfide CuInS2 (CIS) films followed by selenization. The different properties of alkali-doped CISSe films by the alkali chloride pre-deposition (ACPD) method were compared to the post-deposition treatment (PDT) method. Based on FESEM images, a highly compact film with large grains can be obtained for CISSe films doped with K(∼0.72 μm) and Na (∼0.56...
Charge transport properties in nanocomposite photoanodes of DSSCs: Crucial role of electronic structure

Abstract
TiO 2 nanorods, TiO 2 nanorod/TiO 2 nanoparticle and TiO 2 nanorod/ZnO nanoparticle composite structures were integrated as photoanodes in backside illuminated dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). Incorporation of TiO 2 nanoparticles into the bare nanorods increased the dye loading and improved the short-circuit current density (J sc) from 2.22 mA/cm 2 to 3.57 mA/cm 2. ZnO nanoparticles electrochemically grown into the TiO 2 nanorod layer could increase the surface area. Nevertheless, this considerably reduced the J sc to 0.57 mA/cm 2 and consequently cell efficiency. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) results showed that ZnO incorporated samples have better effective diffusion...

Abstract
A three-step method for the deposition of CH3NH3PbI3 perovskite films with a high crystalline structure and large cuboid overlayer morphology is reported. The method includes PbI2 deposition, which is followed by dipping into a solution of C4H9NH3I (BAI) and (BA)2PbI4 perovskite formation. In the final step, the poorly thermodynamically stable (BA)2PbI4 phase converts into the more stable CH3NH3PbI3 perovskite by dipping into a solution of CH3NH3I. The final product is characterized by XRD, SEM, UV/Vis, and photoluminescence analysis methods. The experimental results indicate that the prepared perovskite has cuboids with high crystallinity and large sizes (up to 1 μm), as confirmed by XRD...

Abstract
In recent years, thin silver nanowires (Ag NWs) with diameters smaller than 150 nm have been synthesized by implementation of NaCl or FeCl3 as reaction promoters and high molecular weight polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as the capping agent. However, the yield of Ag NWs still remains low, mostly due to the insufficient aspect ratio (AR) of the synthesized nanostructures and the production of Ag nanoparticles, which is an undesirable by product. This study proposes a modified technique to alleviate the problem by using a mixture of FeCl3/CuCl2 as the reaction promoter and two different types of PVP with molecular weight of 360 k and 40 k as the capping agents. The appropriate mixtures of...

Abstract
Chemical vapour deposition (CVD) at atmospheric pressure, using TiCl 4 as a precursor, was used to grow nanostructured TiO2 films on glass substrates. At relatively low temperatures (∼245 °C) and using relatively high reactant concentrations, different nano-morphologies of TiO2 were formed simultaneously, such as spheres, nanowires and mesoporous structures. The TiO2 spheres were successfully applied as light-scattering particles in dye-sensitized solar cells, either by direct deposition onto electrodes in the reactor, or by preparation of a printing paste from the deposited particles. For dye-sensitized solar cells using the organic dye D35 as sensitizer and a cobalt-complex based redox...

Abstract
Particulate back-reflector films are conventionally used for the improvement of light harvesting in dye solar cells (DSC). The back-reflection of the films is directly related to the scattering efficiency of the individual particles. Inspired by the idea of multilayer optical thin films, here it is demonstrated theoretically and experimentally that putting a SiO2 shell around spherical rutile-TiO2 particles leads to improved light scattering by the particles. These dielectric core-shells not only enhance the overall diffuse reflection of the films, but they also cause a relative improvement in the red and near infrared regions. Back-reflector films of these core-shell particles employed in...

Abstract
We report a study on chalcopyrite solar cells fabricated by low-cost, nonvacuum, and selenization-free methods. Superstrate-type CuInS2 (CIS) thin-film solar cells were prepared by sequential ink deposition. The CIS film was formed from a stable low-carbon ink, which was synthesized at low temperature (<120 °C). The CIS nanoparticle ink was prepared with n-butylamine and acetic acid as the solvent and stabilizer, respectively. The viscous and stable ink that formed through the dispersion of the final nanoparticles in N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) could be deposited readily onto the substrate. The major features of the obtained ink are the small amount of impurity phases and negligible carbon...

Abstract
The photoanodes of solid state dye sensitized solar cells (ss-DSCs) embedded with different contents of TiO 2 hollow spheres (HSs) were prepared and the photovoltaic performances were systematically characterized. TiO 2 hollow spheres were synthesized by a facile sacrificial templating method, grounded and added in different ratios to TiO 2 nanoparticle (NP) paste, from which composite HS/NP electrodes were fabricated. The composite photoanodes include hollow spheres of 300-700 nm with enhanced light scattering characteristics in visible range which leads to improved light absorption in conventional thin film electrodes of ss-DSC. By optimizing the amount of HSs in the paste, 40% improvement...
