Baseline Design of the Exergy Recovery and Solar Heating System at the Gas Pressure Reduction Station and its Technical, Economical, and Environmental Assessments

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Talaei, Mohammad (Author) ; Saboohi, Yadollah (Supervisor)
    Abstract
As producing and consuming of natural gas has increased in recent years, improving natural gas distribution and transfer network systems has become vital. Pressure reduction station (PRS) is an important part of the natural gas network. Common PRSs are facing two issues: first is the pressure reduction technology, which is throttling valve that destroys the exergy of the high pressure flow. The solution is to utilize turbo-expander instead which can recover the energy. Second is the preheating technology which is boiler and water bath heater in the common systems that cause environmental problems. Using solar collectors is one of the best solution based on the literature. Since the solar...

The Effect of Different Stresses in the Three Principal Directions on Horizontal Fractured Formation

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Talaei Mosbat, Masoud (Author) ; Goodarznia, Iraj (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Nowadays, we know that many hydrocarbon reservoirs are fractured regarding this, the investigation of the properties of these reservoirs is necessary to predict the storage, production and the drilling methods. To identify fractured reservoirs, the fracture properties and their geometries under different conditions should be investigated. Besides, the evaluation of the behavior of induced fractures in distinct under ground conditions is very important. The Mechanical properties of the drilling bed like crack propagation, layer and mass rock is impactful in planning of drilling process and hydraulic fracturing operation. In this research, at first we introduce natural and induced fractures...

Assessment of Greenhouse Gas Mitigation Potential from Energy System

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Talaei, Alireza (Author) ; Soltanieh, Mohammad (Supervisor) ; Saboohi, Yadollah (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Globally energy system is the main source of green house gas emission. 60-90 percent of manmade CO2 is due to energy sector. Pollutants like NOx, CO, Non Methane Hydrocarbons which may cause indirect effect on climate system are mainly emitting from energy sector. Gas, Oil and Coal extraction and transmission are responsible for more than 15% of Methane emission globally. Therefore it is important to consider all types of GHGs emission as well as all sectors of energy system to assess the GHGs mitigation potential throughout the energy system. Considering the significance of energy sector in GHGs emission, in this study we developed an optimized model for Iran’s energy sector in which we ran...

Application of Artificial Intelligence for Predicting CO2 Emission Using Weighted Multi-Task Learning

    Abstract
Carbon emissions significantly contribute to global warming, amplifying the occurrence of extreme weather events and negatively impacting the overall environmental transformation. In line with the global commitment to combat climate change through the Paris Agreement (COP21), the European Union (EU) has formulated strategies aimed at achieving climate neutrality by 2050. To achieve this goal, EU member states focus on developing long-term national strategies (NLTSs) and implementing local plans to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in alignment with EU objectives. This study focuses on the case of Sweden and aims to introduce a comprehensive data-driven framework that predicts CO2...

Predicting oil price movements: A dynamic Artificial Neural Network approach

    , Article Energy Policy ; Vol. 68, issue , 2014 , p. 371-382 Godarzi, A. A ; Amiri, R. M ; Talaei, A ; Jamasb, T ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Price of oil is important for the economies of oil exporting and oil importing countries alike. Therefore, insight into the likely future behaviour and patterns of oil prices can improve economic planning and reduce the impacts of oil market fluctuations. This paper aims to improve the application of Artificial Neural Network (ANN) techniques to prediction of oil price. We develop a dynamic Nonlinear Auto Regressive model with eXogenous input (NARX) as a form of ANN to account for the time factor. We estimate the model using macroeconomic data from OECD countries. In order to compare the results, we develop time series and ANN static models. We then use the output of time series model to...

Optimal Decision-Making of Household Prosumer and Renewable Producer in the Pool-Based Electricity Market Using Reinforcement Learning Methods

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Bagherzadeh, Amir Hossein (Author) ; Boroushaki, Mehrdad (Supervisor) ; Talaei, Mohammad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Today, with the expansion of the use of renewable energy and the increase in the production of electrical products, which has resulted in the increase of active consumers in the electricity market, making an optimal decision about the production and consumption of electrical energy has become particularly important. This research examines a sequential decision-making problem in an environment with high uncertainties in which an active household consumer and a renewable producer are simultaneously present in the electricity market. The main goal of this research is to provide an optimal model for making decisions regarding the consumption and production of electric power in the power market...

    Abstract
As the emergence of Internet of Things (IoT) brings the realization of ubiquitous connectivity ever closer, our reliance on these applications gets more important. Nowadays, such connected devices could be found everywhere, from home appliances to industrial control systems and environmental monitoring applications. One of the main challenges in IoT infrastructures is that of reliability, which emboldens itself in the context of Low-power and Lossy Networks (LLN) as they are inherently prone to packet loss as a result of their environmental and design constraints. Therefore, reliability of IoT devices becomes crucially important. With communication, the most important consideration in these...

Enhancing Compound and Gene Image-based Profiling for Drug Discovery and Validation based on Structural/Computational Methods

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Talaei, Tahereh (Author) ; Rohban, Mohammad Hossein (Supervisor) ; Kalhor, Hamid Reza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The image-based profile is a technology by which image morphology information is transformed into a multidimensional profile from a set of image-derived features. These profiles can be used to extract biologically meaningful biological information. For example, in the drug discovery process, the mechanism of action of a drug or disease can be identified by examining the morphological properties of the drug in the patient’s cell or tissue and used to design new drugs or use existing drugs for various diseases. High-throughput imaging technology allows the imaging of a large number of different experiments. Extracting valuable features and a good representation of features is the main...

    Abstract
Reliability of routing mechanisms in wireless networks is typically measured with Packet Delivery Ratio (PDR). Basically, PDR is reported with an optimistic assumption that the topology is fully constructed, and the nodes have started their packet transmission. This is despite the fact that prior to being able to transmit packets, nodes must first join the network, and then try to keep connected as much as possible. This is a key factor in the overall reliability provided by the routing protocols, especially in mobile IoT applications, where disconnections occur frequently. Nevertheless, there is a lack of appropriate metrics, which could evaluate the routing mechanisms from this...
