, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Abedian, Ali (Supervisor)
Abstract
In aerospace applications, the weight of structures is considered as a major performance parameter. One of the most effective ways for weight reduction is then attributed to the structurally continuous manufacturing of mechanical components. In this way, not only the weight, but also the stress concentration, the cost, joints and fasteners applications, and the time of manufacturing are noticeably reduced. With this method, components with complicated shapes could be formed in a single manufacturing step. Special specification of whisker reinforced Metal Matrix Composites (MMC’s) has made these materials very attractive for the aerospace applications. That is why the superplastic forming of...

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology ; Pourjavadi, Ali (Supervisor)
Abstract
Mesoporous silica nanoparticles have broad application in drud delivery systems due to their porous structure, functionalization, biocompatibility, high surface area and pore volume. Neverthless, pure mesoporous silica nanoparticles without functionality were not smart material and could not release drug in triggered and controlled manner. For this reason, using smart polymeric coating would be considered. Polymer shells also provide colloidal stability, improved blood circulation lifetime and reduced toxicity which are crucial for efficient in vivo drug delivery. Inflammatory and tumor tissue have low pH and high temperature as compared to health tissue. Therefore, using pH and...

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology ; Bakhshi, Ali (Supervisor)
Abstract
Adverse social and economic effects of earthquakes have necessitated the emergence and development of efficient methods to assess and monitor the health status of structures. Many of the structural health monitoring algorithms are based on linear models that are not able to provide sufficient dynamic information. Nonlinear models require monitoring of a larger number of structural parameters and provide a much closer to reality model of the structure. Therefore, the use of nonlinear models in the identification process provides more useful information about the safety and serviceability of post-earthquake structures. Also, most of the existing methods are not applicable for online health...

(Supervisor)
Abstract
During the last few years, utilization of distributed generation (DG) in power systems has been widely increased. This trend has magnified studying the effects and impacts of DG on such systems. One of the benefits of DGs in a power system is loss reduction. If determining DG size and place is done properly, the loss of the network can be minimized. Another way of reducing loss in distribution network is by reconfiguring the network. During the reconfiguration, constraints like being radial, avoiding load isolation as well as voltage/current limitations must be taken into consideration. Taking these constraints into account makes reconfiguration an optimization problem. In this project, the...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Abbaspour Tehrani Fard, Ali (Supervisor)
Abstract
With the increasing penetration of renewable energies as distributed generation (DG) in power systems, technical problems arise in both distribution and transmission system level. Voltage rise is the main barrier for connection of DGs in rural areas, while excessive reactive power demand from transmission system is the major concern for Transmission System Operators (TSO). Here, a centralized control scheme based on the Smart Grid is proposed to reduce the impact on the transmission system voltages and improve its stability, while mitigating the voltage rise issue in the distribution network. Reactive power output of DGs, substation capacitors and tap setting of transmission transformer are...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Abbaspour Tehrani Fard, Ali (Supervisor)
Abstract
One of the challenges which increasing penetration of renewable energy sources with variable generation brings is the need for more flexibility in the power system. A promising way to overcome the challenge is to have local sources of the flexibility in distribution level. To this end, we present a new model for multi-stage distribution system expansion planning which jointly considers expanding the network assets and increasing the flexibility at local level by installing conventional dispatchable distributed generator units and energy storage systems. Demand response is also considered as another source of the flexibility which can be utilized by the system operator. Since deviating from...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Tavazoei, Mohammad Saleh (Supervisor) ; Ghazazideh, Ali (Co-Supervisor)
Abstract
Learning is an essential mechanism for the survival of living things. There are different types of learning, and value learning is among the most important types. A child learns that water resolves the thirst need by repeatedly experiencing this situation. Eventually, the value of water, which has been valueless before that, increases gradually in his mind. How this concept is encoded in the brain? previous works reveal the role of different neurons and regions that are relevant to value learning. However, population analysis and dynamic modeling are less considered. Moreover, the links between different brain regions are unknown.Finding the relationship between two relevant regions of the...

Abstract
The two-dimensional composites are benefited from different advantageous; however, they may not be good enough in terms of strength along the thickness, manufacturing speed, cost management and resistance to delamination. To overcome these unpleasant challenges, the three-dimensional composites are defined as having a 3D pattern of yarns which not only includes yarns along the length and width, but also in thickness or vertical direction. One of these common types of composites is 3D-orthogonal woven composites. In this comprehensive research study, the 3D orthogonal woven composite modelling is conducted through a specialized and advanced software, TexGen software. Then Voxel mesh were...
Distance Relay Blocking in Power Restoration
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Abbaspour Tehrani Fard, Ali (Supervisor) ; Ranjbar, Ali Mohammad (Supervisor)
Abstract
It is possible to unload a transmission line for a while. In line restoration voltage and current of the line will have some dynamic changes. So the apparent impedance of distance relay will have dynamic changes. These changes may cause some bad results including entrance of apparent impedance to the operational zones of distance relay and even relay tripping. Consequently if relay trips, the line restoration process will stop and may not be possible.
So we want an algorithm to distinguish line restoration from short circuit condition and block the relay. This algorithm must be able to stop blocking if there is any fault in the operational zones of the relay.
In this thesis an...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Ashtiani Mofrad Tehrani, Farid (Supervisor) ; Maddah Ali, Mohammad Ali (Supervisor)
Abstract
In this contemporary era, distributed computing is a vital solution for many applications. The traditional computing scheme based on allocating one complete computation to only one server is not efficient anymore. Delay has a very important role in computation’s performance especially for the computation at the edge of the network. To alleviate the effect of big data and complex algorithms, distributed computing is a very promising solution. In this structure, all computations are divided into some small tasks or coded, based on the system's status and will be executed in parallel. In fully parallelized distributed computing, a task is broken into N smaller tasks and whenever all N subtasks...
Achievable Delay Margin by Using PID Fractional-Order Controllers
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Tavazoei, Mohammad Saleh (Supervisor)
Abstract
This paper concerns the delay margin achievable using fractional order Proportional_Integral_Derivative controllers for linear time- invariant systems subject to variable, unknown time delays. The basic issue under investigation addresses the question: What is the largest range of time delay so that there exists a single fractional order Proportional_Integral_Derivative controller to stabilize the delay plants within the entire range? Delay margin is a fundamental measure of robust stabilization against uncertain time delays and poses a fundamental, longstanding problem that remains open except in simple, isolated cases. In this research, we develop explicit expressions of the exact delay...
