Abstract
Polymer quality control in an industrial scale polyethylene fluidized bed reactor has been addressed. Since online measurements of polymer properties (melt index and density) are not available, they must be controlled indirectly via other available measurements. In the present paper, two algebraic equations correlating polyethylene melt index and density with the measureable concentrations of chemical components are obtained. Having the desired polyethylene properties and using these correlations, desired concentrations of chemical components are calculated and used via corresponding control loops. By using the infrequently available polyethylene property measurements, the correlation...

2023
Abstract
The precise estimation of time-varying demand matrices using traffic data is an essential step for planning, scheduling, and evaluating advanced traffic management systems. This paper presents an innovative method, based on the least squares approach, to handle the inherent complexities of estimating the dynamic characteristics of changing demand flow over time while considering congestion conditions. The time-dependent origin–destination (OD) demand matrices of the network are estimated by exploiting the received partial paths data from an automated vehicle identification system and vehicle counts data from loop detectors on a subset of the links. A traffic assignment approach based on...

Abstract
In present paper, dynamic behavior and control of a fluidized bed reactor for polyethylene production has been considered. A double active sites model for Ziegler-Natta catalysts is used for simulation of polymerization reaction. Hydrodynamic behavior of the bed is modeled using a two phase model including bubble and emulsion phases in which bubble phase has plug flow pattern with differentially variable velocity and size through the bed and emulsion phase has the CSTR flow pattern. The reactor model is validated using industrial data. Conventional PID controllers with anti-windup are considered for control purposes. It has been shown that the control system has satisfactory performances...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Shadrokh, Shahram (Supervisor)
Abstract
This is common for organizations to don't move in their specified mission statement direction, because of pressures for saving themselves in reaction to environment changes. This problem can be addressed as conflict between survival and identity. In this thesis we approach this problem by synthesizing "Viable System Model" and "System Dynamics". Basic of this model shaped on viable system model structure and system dynamics modeling. In literature there is only two such models. But they are not detailed enough for providing mathematical analysis. In this research, law of requisite variety (one of the key principles in cybernetics) has been quantified. In this synthetic model, appropriate...
Information Superiority between Individual and Institutional Traders in Tehran Stock Exchange
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Keshavarz Haddad, Gholamreza (Supervisor)
Abstract
Informational inequality between institutional and individual traders is one of the centric issues in financial markets. The preference of each of these groups to attain personal information may provide other traders important information. New traders could make a profit by addressing the preferable group and following its transactions. This study aims to determine the winner group at attaining more personal information, by breaking down the probability of informed trading (PIN), one of the most famous measures in informational risk to two main components: the probability of informed trading of individuals (DPIN) and the probability of informed trading of institutions (SPIN). Moreover, the...

Abstract
The size and morphology of secondary phase and intermetallic compounds in gas atomized Al- 20Si-5Fe-2X (X=Cu, Ni, Cr) powders were studied. It was shown that the microstructure compromised of fine particle-like primary Si, aciculate δ-Al9FeSi3 intermetallic compound containing small amount of dissolved alloying elements, and fine Al-Si eutectic matrix. Decreasing the powder particle size yields finer primary silicon but its morphology is not affected. Also, significant refinement in the size of δ-Al9FeSi3 intermetallic was observed as the particles become finer. This particle size effect on the microstructure of Al-20Si-5Fe alloy was found to be influenced by the presence of chromium. Here,...

Abstract
Sulfur dioxide (SO2) is one of the acidic components found in the flue gas that can harm industrial facilities and the environment. SO2 adsorption by metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is an emerging method to effectively remove SO2 in low concentrations from the gas mixtures. In this study, amino-functionalized MIL-53(Al), i.e., NH2-MIL-53(Al), was synthesized through the solvothermal method and examined for SO2 adsorption at relatively moderate pressure and temperature (up to 2 bar, 25-80 °). According to the results of XRD, FT-IR, TGA, and DSC analysis, NH2-MIL-53(Al) demonstrated appropriate water, acid, and thermal stability. The SO2 adsorption capacity of NH2-MIL-53(Al) was 5.21 mmol.g-1...

Abstract
In this paper, based on three-dimensional phenomenological model and using a user-defined material subroutine mechanical behavior of shape memory alloy (SMA) wire ropes (or cables) and their components have been studied through implicit solution method in Abaqus software. Material parameters have been extracted using available experimental data and numerical simulations. Due to the convoluted geometry and interwire contact status within a cable, a finite element analysis is firstly performed for a 1 × 37 steel wire rope to validate modeling and mechanical interactions of a wire rope. Afterwards, superelastic and shape memory effect cables with different constructions (7 × 7 and 1 × 27) are...

An efficient tabu search algorithm for the single row facility location problem [electronic resource]
, Article European Journal Of Operational Research ; Vol. 205, No. 1, pp. 98-105 ; Eshghi, Kourosh ; Sharif University of Technology
Abstract
The general goal of the facility layout problem is to arrange a given number of facilities to minimize the total cost associated with the known or projected interactions between them. One of the special classes of the facility layout problem is the Single Row Facility Layout Problem (SRFLP), which consists of finding an optimal linear placement of rectangular facilities with varying dimensions on a straight line. This paper first presents and proves a theorem to find the optimal solution of a special case of SRFLP. The results obtained by this theorem prove to be very useful in reducing the computational efforts when a new algorithm based on tabu search for the SRFLP is proposed in this...

Blood Glucose Control for Type 1 Diabetes Patients with Explicit Model Predictive Control (MPC)
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Alasty, Aria (Supervisor) ; Vahidi, Omid (Co-Supervisor)
Abstract
Blood glucose regulation in type 1 diabetes patients requires the delivery of the proper amount of insulin from an external source. The literature of Blood Glucose Control signifies the superiority of model-based controllers over the other ones. Regarding its lack of need to complicated on-line calculations and the simplicity of its implementation on a micro-chip, the explicit Model Predictive Controller is preferred over the implicit MPC. Currently proposed explicit MPC controllers have employed relatively simple models representing human glucose-insulin dynamics. In this thesis, an explicit MPC controller is designed using mp-QP based on Sorensen’s 19-state comprehensive model which has...

Abstract
By locating a steel shear panel on the intersection point of the X-braces, concentrically or eccentrically braced shear panel (CBFSP or EBFSP) is formed. In this paper, to perform parametric study, 1-story CBFSP and EBFSP models with span length greater or less than height are considered. Using linear static analyses, the effects of size and location of the shear panel on the lateral stiffness of the frame with respect to the moment resisting frame with the same member sections are investigated. Next, for 1- And 3-story models, maximum displacement, along with base shear, and the ratio between the dissipated energy and input energy are examined under 4 ground motion records. Behavior of the...
Assessment of Seismic Retrofit Policies for Buildings
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Kashani, Hamed (Supervisor)
Abstract
Occurrence of natural disasters such as earthquake could seriously damage most buildings especially those with insufficient resistance located in urban worn-out textures. In order to reduce unpleasant consequences of an earthquake, appropriate policies need to be considered to persuade the beneficiaries to follow retrofitting standards in the process of planning, designing, and construction of buildings. These policies shall be implemented through institutions in arbitrary or obligatory forms, by encouragement or penalty mechanisms. In order to consider these policies, first of all we need to identify the beneficiaries and their particulars. By studying and considering subjects discussed in...
