, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Shirvani, Sara (Author) ; Vosughi, Manouchehr (Supervisor) ; Rashtchian, Davood (Supervisor) ; Pazuki, Gholamreza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In the past years, upstream processes have been receiving a considerable R&D investment and commercial attention. The downstream processes have, however, been overlooked causing a production bottleneck that is shifting the costs of production from up to downstream. The need to develop more efficient and cost-effective separation and purification processes is, thus, crucial in order to improve process efficiency and economics keeping the required high standards of quality for market approval. In this research, promising aqueous two-phase systems (ATPS) containing Tween 20 as a quite biocompatible non-ionic surfactant and different salts (K3Citrate and NaH2PO4) were prepared and their...

    Abstract
Particle retention and clearance is a major concern in the treatment of pulmonary diseases. Inhaled materials into the nasal and lung airways include gases/vapors, liquid droplets and soluble/insoluble particulate matter which can be toxic or therapeutic (or both). For example, nanoparticles (NPs), as part of nanomedicine, are now being used as drug carriers for passive and active targeting of solid tumors and inflamed tissue. However, natural and especially manmade NPs can also be harmful, such as carbon nanotubes (CNTs), asbestos fibers and ambient toxic pollutants, based on epidemiological and pathological studies of occupational and environmental exposures. In fact, ultrafine particles...

Epileptic seizure detection using AR model on EEG signals

    , Article 2008 Cairo International Biomedical Engineering Conference, CIBEC 2008, Cairo, 18 December 2008 through 20 December 2008 ; February , 2008 ; 9781424426959 (ISBN) Mousavi, R ; Niknazar, M ; Vosughi Vahdat, B ; Sharif University of Technology
    2008
    Abstract
This study presents a new method for epilepsy detection based on autoregressive (AR) estimation of EEG signals. In this method, optimum order for AR model is determined by Bayesian Information Criterion (BIC) and then AR parameters of EEG signals (from EEG data set of epilepsy center of the University of Bonn, Germany) and their sub-bands (created with the help of wavelet decomposition) are extracted based on it. These parameters are used as a feature to classify the EEG signals into Healthy, Interictal (seizure free) and Ictal (during a seizure) groups using multilayer perceptron (MLP) classifier. Correct classification scores at the range of 91% to 96% reveals the potential of our approach...

It facilitates our daily life as we use it in our mobile phones and computers for unlocking our devices. Many approaches were employed in the face recognition applications. Some of them were single-modal like PCA, ICA and LDA and some others were multimodal like Visual + 3D or 3D + IR. Still, most of Face recognition methods suffer from environment changes like variations in illumination and...

Stimulus Signal Improvement in Order to Alleviate the Symptoms of Parkinson's Disease in Rat

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Gholipour, Saman (Author) ; Vosughi Vahdat, Bijan (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Parkinson's disease is a degenerative disorder of the central nervous system. The motor symptoms of Parkinson's disease result from the death of dopamine-generating cells in the substantia nigra. The cause of this cell death is unknown. Early in the course of the disease, the most obvious symptoms are movement-related. Some of the symptoms are: shaking, rigidity, slowness of movement and difficulty with walking and gait. Modern treatments are effective at managing the early motor symptoms of the disease, mainly through the use of levodopa and dopamine agonists. As the disease progresses these drugs eventually become ineffective and produce a complication called dyskinesia, marked by...

After reviewing the literature 7 approaches were identified to minimize multiple channel conflict: Superordinate goals (goals that achieving them requires efforts and resources of more than one channel), Brand (using products with different...

Design of an Algorithm for Automatic Incident Detection by Using Loop Detector Data Compatible to Traffic Conditions in Iran

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Asadabadi, Ali (Author) ; Vaziri, Manouchehr (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Incidents are one of the main sources of delays and they have significant influences on road safety and congestions, air pollution and trip costs. In the time of an incident occurrence, minimizing the response time is essential for several reasons. The most important issue is providing aid for the injured. The faster the persons who are severely injured receive aid, the higher their chances are to be rescued. Also, if the rescue crews get to the incident scene faster the clearance procedure would be accomplished faster and this would result in fewer disturbances in traffic stream and lowering the probability of secondary incidents occurrence. Automatic Incident Detection, AID, has been...
