A novel earned value management model using Z-number
, Article International Journal of Applied Decision Sciences ; Vol. 7, Issue. 1 , 2014 , pp. 97-119 ; ISSN: 17558085 ; Bagherpour, M ; Wang, J ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
The earned value management (EVM) model is an essential technique for managing and forecasting project features such as scheduling and cost performances indexes. This paper presents a novel fuzzy earned-value model based on Z-number theory incorporating both the impreciseness of real life conditions and a degree of reliability through considering an expert judgment process. The latter factor has not been used by other researchers in the field. The proposed model provides a reliable assessment for the progress performance of a project and its 'at completion' cost in an uncertain environment. Finally, an illustrative case demonstrates the applicability of the proposed model in real life...

Abstract
The adhesion and mechanical properties of hydrogels used for vascular wound repair often deteriorate dramatically on wet surfaces, resulting in ineffective repair. In this work, a poly(N-isopropyl acrylamide-co-dopamine methacrylamide) nanogel with dopamine groups was synthesized and introduced into a polyacrylamide (PAAm) hydrogel to produce temperature-responsive hydrogels, which greatly improved mechanical and adhesive properties of PAAm hydrogels. Nanogel-reinforced PAAm (NR-PAAm hydrogel) can adhere to the surface of various solid materials and biological tissues through special physical interactions, which exhibited different mechanical and adhesion properties as temperature changes...
A sparse representation-based wavelet domain speech steganography method
, Article IEEE/ACM Transactions on Speech and Language Processing ; Volume 23, Issue 1 , 2015 , Pages 80-91 ; 23299290 (ISSN) ; Ghaemmaghami, S ; Wang, Z. J ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
In this paper, we present a novel speech steganography method using discrete wavelet transform and sparse decomposition to address the undetectability concern in speech steganography. The proposed speech steganography method exploits the sparse representation to embed secret messages into higher semantic levels of the cover signal, resulting in increased undetectability. The proposed method also yields improvements on both stego signal quality and embedding capacity, which are the two major requirements of a steganography algorithm. Our experimental results illustrate that the stego signals generated by the proposed method are perceptually indistinguishable from the original cover signals,...

Abstract
This study investigates the secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation potential of carburetor motorcycles exhaust. This type of two-wheeler is a popular means of transport in many Asian cities. A volatility-based numerical model was employed to predict SOA formation from a fleet of motorcycles in Tehran, capital of Iran. The fleet was a combination of four-stroke, gasoline-powered motorcycles with different engine displacement volumes. Total hydrocarbon (THC) emission factors of all motorcycles were previously measured in a chassis dynamometer laboratory according to cold start Euro-3 emissions certification test procedures. Due to incomplete combustion and lack of control on exhaust...
Search for critical loading condition of the spine-A meta analysis of a nonlinear viscoelastic finite element model
, Article Computer Methods in Biomechanics and Biomedical Engineering ; Volume 8, Issue 5 , 2005 , Pages 323-330 ; 10255842 (ISSN) ; Shirazi Adl, A ; Parnianpour, M ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
The relative vulnerability of spinal motion segments to different loading combinations remains unknown. The meta-analysis described here using the results of a validated L2-L3 nonlinear viscoelastic finite element model was designed to investigate the critical loading and its effect on the internal mechanics of the human lumbar spine. A Box-Behnken experimental design was used to design the magnitude of seven independent variables associated with loads, rotations and velocity of motion. Subsequently, an optimization method was used to find the primary and secondary variables that influence spine mechanical output related to facet forces, disc pressure, ligament forces, annulus matrix...

Abstract
The effect of moisture on Shengli lignite breakage behavior and energy efficiency was studied experimentally using a standard Hardgrove mill fitted with a wattmeter. The grinding process concerned both the inputs, namely the occurrence and content of water and instantaneous energy consumption and the outputs, size-reduction and product fineness. Results show that the energy-size reduction process for grinding lignite is markedly influenced by moisture occurrence and content. Removing surface moisture from 37.90% to 16.61% (the air-dried condition) resulted in a slight increase of input energy by 0.04 kWh.t−1 per 10 s. However, with further drying inherent moisture to 0%, the consumed energy...

Abstract
In the communication problem UR (universal relation), Alice and Bob respectively receive x, y {0,1}^n with the promise that xy. The last player to receive a message must output an index i such that x-iy-i. We prove that the randomized one-way communication complexity of this problem in the public coin model is exactly Θ(min{n,log(1/Δ)log^2(rac n{log(1/Δ)})}) for failure probability Δ. Our lower bound holds even if promised mathop{support}(y)mathop{support}(x). As a corollary, we obtain optimal lower bounds for -p-sampling in strict turnstile streams for 0le p streams for 0 ≤ p © 2017 IEEE

Abstract
A novel super-resolution volumetric photoacoustic microscopy, based on the theory of structured-illumination, is proposed in this paper. The structured-illumination will be introduced in order to surpass the diffraction limit in a photoacoustic microscopy (PAM) structure. Through optical excitation of the targeted object with a sinusoidal spatial fringe pattern, the object's frequency spectrum is forced to shift in the spatial frequency domain. The shifting in the desired direction leads to the passage of the high-frequency contents of the object through the passband of the acoustic diffraction frequency response. Finally, combining the low-frequency image with the high-frequency parts in...
A poroelastic finite element model to describe the time-dependent response of lumbar intervertebral disc
, Article Journal of Medical Imaging and Health Informatics ; Volume 1, Issue 3 , 2011 , Pages 246-251 ; 21567018 (ISSN) ; Haghpanahi, M ; Wang, J. L ; Parnianpour, M ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
Investigation of the relationship between different types of mechanical loading and the failure of the intervertebral disc requires a well-defined finite element model. The objective of this paper was to develop and validate a nonlinear axisymmetric poroelastic finite element model of intervertebral disc and show its capability for studying the time-dependent response. After presenting the poroelastic model of intervertebral disc, the results of prolonged (short-term and long-term creep tests) and cyclic loading were compared with in vivo and in vitro experimental data. The trends predicted by FE model agreed well with measured experimental data and showed its validity for dynamic analysis....

Abstract
Understanding the relationship between different kinds of mechanical loading and the failure of the intervertebral disc is difficult to study in vivo and in vitro. Through finite element studies some of these issues may be overcome enabling more detailed assessment of the biomechanical behavior of the intervertebral disc. The objective of this paper is to develop a nonlinear axisymmetric poroelastic finite element model of intervertebral disc and show its capability for studying the time-dependent response of disc. After comparison of the response of different models in quasi-static analysis, the poroelastic model of intervertebral disc is presented and the results of a short-term and...

Abstract
Low back pain is a common reason for activity limitation in people younger than 45 years old, and was proved to be associated with heavy physical works, repetitive lifting, impact, stationary work postures and vibrations. The study of load transferring and the loading condition encountered in spinal column can be simulated by finite element models. The intervertebral disc is a structure composed of a porous material. Many physical models were developed to simulate this phenomenon. The confounding effects of poroelastic properties and loading conditions on disc mechanical responses are, nevertheless, not cleared yet. The objective of this study was to develop an axisymmetric poroelastic...

Abstract
This research explored the influences of shielding gases on the appearance of weld beads and the microstructures and mechanical properties of thin-wall samples using conventional gas metal arc welding as the heat source by using 5356 aluminium alloy welding wire as the raw materials and nitrogen (N2) and argon (Ar) as the shielding gases. The results showed that under the same parameters and after mono-layer single-bead welding was performed using N2 as the shielding gas, the bead height was higher, the bead width was narrower, and the penetration depth was shallower. The grain size of the thin-wall sample protected by N2 was 43.5–47.8 % smaller than that obtained under Ar protection....
SVD analysis of dynamic properties for fatigue loaded intervertebral disc
, Article 2011 1st Middle East Conference on Biomedical Engineering, MECBME 2011, 21 February 2011 through 24 February 2011, Sharjah ; 2011 , Pages 32-36 ; 9781424470006 (ISBN) ; Malik, A. S ; Wang, J. L ; Parnianpour, M ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
This paper uses singular value decomposition (SVD) for studying the dynamic properties of fatigue-loaded intervertebral disc. Previously, this problem had been addressed using mathematical models of using mass, spring and damper or based on poroelastic theory. This paper utilizes the signal processing approach and attempts to describe SVD based feature that can be an indicator for change in behavioral performance of the intervertebral disc warning the occurrence of temporary or permanent change in the structure or abnormality in behavior. The results are encouraging; however, further validation is required with more data
Tribo-charging of binary mixtures composed of coarse and fine particles in gas–solid pipe flow

Abstract
Experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of adding fines on the tribo-charging of coarse glass beads. Four types of fines, i.e., copper, stainless steel, uncoated and silver-coated fine glass beads, mixed with 240–830 μm glass beads were conveyed by air through a stainless-steel spiral pipe acting as a tribo-charger. Regardless of the type or electrical conductivity of the fine particles tested, adding small amounts of fines (up to 10 wt%) to coarse glass beads resulted in a sharp increase in the mass and surface charge densities of the particles. In general, the profiles of the mass and surface charge densities of the fine–coarse particle mixtures as a function of the mixture...
Effect of annealing treatment on joint strength of aluminum/steel friction stir lap weld

Abstract
In this work, the effects of the annealing temperature and duration on the joint strength of the steel/aluminum lap joints made by friction stir welding were investigated. The strength of the welded joints was evaluated by shear-tensile test. Formation of intermetallic layer at the joint interface and the fracture locations were studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) equipped with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD). The results indicated that longer time of annealing treatment resulted in higher joint strength at 300 and 350 °C and that the rate of the increase in joint strength with time was about 72% higher at the latter temperature...

Abstract
Urea is a major source of nitrogen pollution in domestic sewage and its denitrification is difficult since it is very likely to be converted into ammonia or nitrate instead of expected N2. Herein, we propose an exhaustive denitrification method for urea via the oxidation of amine/ammonia-N with chlorine oxide radical, which induced from a bi-functional RuO2//WO3 anode, and the highly selective reduction of nitrate-N on cathode in photoelectrochemical cell (PEC). Under illumination, the WO3 photoanode side promotes the quantities hydroxyl and reactive chlorine radical, and these radicals are immediately combined to stronger chlorine oxide radical by RuO2 side, which obviously enhances the...

Abstract
ABSTRACT Disc rheological parameters regulate the mechanical and biological function of intervertebral disc. The knowledge of effects of degeneration on disc rheology can be beneficial for the design of new disc implants or therapy. We developed two material property identification protocols, i.e., inverse poroelas-tic finite element analysis, and biphasic closed form solution. These protocols were used to find the material properties of intact, moderate and severe degenerated porcine discs. Comparing these two computational protocols for intact and artificial degenerated discs showed they are valid in defining bi-phasic/poroelastic properties. We found that enzymatic agent disrupts the...

Abstract
Finite element analysis is an effective tool to evaluate the material properties of living tissue. For an interactive optimization procedure, the finite element analysis usually needs many simulations to reach a reasonable solution. The metamodel analysis of finite element simulation can be used to reduce the computation of a structure with complex geometry or a material with composite constitutive equations. The intervertebral disc is a complex, heterogeneous, and hydrated porous structure. A poroelastic finite element model can be used to observe the fluid transferring, pressure deviation, and other properties within the disc. Defining reasonable poroelastic material properties of the...

Abstract
Structural and dynamic properties of ions confined in nanoslits are crucial to understand the fundamental mechanism underlying a wide range of chemical and biological phenomena. K + and Cl - show similar ion mobilities in a bulk aqueous solution, whereas they exhibit a remarkable difference when transporting through an angstrom-scale channel. Our molecular dynamics simulations uncover that such discrepancy originates from the subtle differences in their hydration structures and preferable locations across the channel. Opposite charge causes different water dipolar orientations around ions, mediating the distance and tribological interactions between hydrated ions and channel's walls....

Abstract
The Electrorheological (ER) disk is a widely used smart material in various engineering applications due to its ability to change its mechanical properties in response to electric fields. The vibration analysis of such a disk is essential for understanding its dynamic behavior and designing efficient control strategies. In this paper, the hyperbolic differential quadrature method (HDQM) is applied to investigate the vibration responses of the ER disk. Both first and higher-order shear deformation theories are incorporated for modeling displacement fields in sandwich disks. In the interface of the layers’ compatibility conditions are applied. The HDQM is a numerical technique based on the...
