Direct Torque Control in Brushless Doubly-Fed Induction Motor
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Kaboli, Shahriyar (Supervisor)
Abstract
Common induction motors are controlled with the stator voltage and so all the power passes throw the converter. In the Brushless Doubly-fed Induction Motor (BDFM) a converter with smaller size and lower cost can be used. Also its brushless operation and cage rotor are advantages in comparison with doubly-fed induction motors with rotor excitation. Direct Torque Control is a method to control induction motors. Its advantages include fast responses to flux and torque commands, not requiring to know machine parameters except winding resistors, and easy implementation. In this thesis application of this method to control the BDFM is studied. At the first, electromagnetic mechanism and coupling...
Stress-Based Topology Optimization of Multi-Material Structures with Convolutional Neural Networks
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Asghari, Mohsen (Supervisor)
Abstract
In this study, a novel approach is proposed for analyzing multi-material topology optimization problems with stress constraints. Instead of interpolating the stress tolerance of materials, the proposed method divides the stress exerted on each finite element among the existing materials within the element and directly compares it with the stress tolerance of each material. This method not only reduces computational load but also effectively prevents the occurrence of stress singularity phenomena. To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed method, two problem formulations were investigated. In the first formulation, the structure's mass is considered as the objective function, with stress...
Mesoscale finite element prediction of concrete failure

Abstract
The present paper studies the failure of concrete from the mesoscopic point of view. Biphasic cubic concrete samples containing spherical aggregates embedded in a homogenized mortar have been simulated using standard finite element method. Linear elasticity and damage-plasticity hypotheses are considered for the aggregates and mortar, respectively. Various triaxial loading conditions are assumed for each sample to generate adequate discrete failure points within the stress space. In the next step, the approximated failure surfaces of specimens are constructed using the Delaunay triangulation technique. The effects of mesostructural features such as aggregate grading curve, aggregate...

Abstract
This paper presents the design and implementation of a bidirectional distributed amplifier (BDDA) in a 0.18- boldsymbol mu ext{m} CMOS process. The performance of the BDDA is theoretically analyzed, and the optimum number of gain stages ( n-{ ext {opt}} ), maximum achievable power gain ( G-{P} ), and circuit bandwidth are formulated. In addition, a new formula for proper choice of the number of DA stages (i.e., n ) is offered where dc-power consumption of the circuit ( P-{ ext {dc}} ) is also considered. This formula optimizes G-{P}/P-{ ext {dc}} , and it is preferred over the conventional n-{ ext {opt}} formula. To validate the theoretical analyses, a 2-12-GHz BDDA with high output 1-dB...

Abstract
In this study, the thermal buckling analysis of hybrid laminated plates made of two-layered functionally graded materials (FGMs) that are integrated with surface-bonded piezoelectric actuators referred to as (P/FGM)s are investigated. Material properties for both substrate FGM layers and piezoelectric layers are temperature-dependent. Uniform temperature rise as a thermal load and constant applied actuator voltage are considered for this analysis. By definition of four new analytic functions, the five coupled governing stability equations, which are derived based on the first-order shear deformation plate theory, are converted into fourth-order and second-order decoupled partial differential...

Abstract
Droplet-based microfluidics offers significant advantages, such as high throughput and scalability, making platforms based on this technology ideal candidates for point-of-care (POC) testing and clinical diagnosis. However, the efficiency of co-encapsulation in droplets is suboptimal, limiting the applicability of such platforms for the biosensing applications. The homogeneity of the bioanalytes in the droplets is an unsolved problem. While there is extensive literature on the experimental setups and active methods used to increase the efficiency of such platforms, passive techniques have received less attention, and their fundamentals have not been fully explored. Here, we develop a novel...

Abstract
Feature vector extraction, based on local image texture, is a primitive algorithm for many other applications, like segmentation, clustering and identification. If these feature vectors are a good match to the human visual system (HVS), we can expect to get the appropriate results by using them. Gabor filters has been used for this purpose successfully. In this paper we introduce a novel refinement, with the use of Matching Pursuit (MP) to improve the Gabor based texture feature extractor. With this improvement, we show that the separability of different textures will increase. Another consideration in this work is computation complexity. Therefore, we limit the basis function set to reduce...

Abstract
Entrance of air to close water conduits occurs in many ways. This phenomenon makes displeasing effects on water transport structures. Two-phase flows in closed conduits are studied experimentally, numerically and theoretically. Even after decades, due to the complexity of the subject, these studies still require development and reformation. Numerical and theoretical two-phase models are often limited to a special regime of flow."Volume Of Fluid"(VOF) is a model for non-mixing two-phase flows. "Fluent" software uses this model in this field of flows. Volume of fluid is used successfully in some problems like dam break or rising bubbles. Main disadvantage of this model is distribution of the...

Efficient Management of River Water Quality Based on Pollution Trading Approach
, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology ; Shamsai, Abolfazl (Supervisor)
Abstract
“Sustainable development” is a frequently used phrase, but the idiom has been experienced little since it was coined by the Brundtland, due to its intrinsic complications. The issue is going to compromise two key components; economy and ecology. One of the solutions based on concept of sustainable development that has been proposed for maintaining water quality at acceptable levels is to cap pollutant emissions at a sustainable level, then establish an economic market in which the right to discharge pollutants is traded according to market supply and demand mechanisms. Water quality trading or pollution trading is one such kind of market-based program that has also been described using names...
Semi-supervised Breast Cancer Subtype Clustering Using Microarray Datasets
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Motahhari, Abolfazl (Supervisor)
Abstract
Gene expression microarrays can be used for precision medicine and targeted therapies. The data generated by microarrays are high-dimensional causing statistical inference of any parameter a daunting task. In this thesis, it is shown that regardless of high-dimensional datasets produced by microarrays, the inference can be robust in the sense that random selection of features results in the same conclusion as far as the number of selected features are chosen appropriately. Stratifying patients with breast cancer based on their gene expression levels shows that patient subtypes are almost independent of the feature selection strategy. Moreover, using less noisy datasets coming from RNAseq...
A Simulation for Better Understanding of Integrin Clustering and Activation
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Motahhari, Abolfazl (Supervisor)
Abstract
Today, computer simulations are employed prevalently by researchers to understand biological processes. The tendency to use computational methods has been increased recently due to the high costs and errors of experimental methods. Integrins are membrane proteins that mechanically attach cells to the extra cellular matrix (ECM) and derive some behaviors such as cell migration. Moreover, integrins have biochemical functions. They transduce environment signals and trigger chemical pathways. As a result, integrins regulate cell shape, motility, etc. The investigation of integrin behavior in a real environment is very difficult due to the presence of many other proteins that interfere with the...
