Aging-Aware Power Management in Heterogeneous Fault-Tolerant Embedded Systems

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Yari Karin, Sina (Author) ; Ejlali, Alireza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
High reliability and low power consumption are two crucial requirements of embedded systems. To do this, embedded systems exploit fault-tolerant techniques to keep reliability at a guaranteed level and power management methods to reduce power consumption. However, the inherent redundancy of the fault-tolerant techniques increases the power consumption and, consequently, the system temperature, which leads to an increase in the rate of the aging phenomenon. Power management methods increase the system's lifetime by reducing the system temperature. However, some power management methods (e.g., Dynamic Voltage and Frequency Scaling) increase the fault rate. Recently, heterogeneous multicore...

Frequency Control During Power System Restoration

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Yari, Vahid (Author) ; Ranjbar, Ali Mohammad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The problem of restoring power systems after a complete or partial blackout is as old as the power industry itself. In recent years, due to economic competition and deregulation, power systems are operated closer and closer to their limits. At the same time, power systems have increased in size and complexity. Both factors increase the risk of major power outages. After a blackout, power needs to be restored as quickly and reliably as possible, and consequently, detailed restoration plants are necessary. This thesis concentrates on the initial stages of restoration where load pickup and frequency control problem is identified. The best sequence of load pickup for power plants during power...

Electrodeposition of Ag-Pd Alloy for Enhancing Corrosion Resistance

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Yari, Mohammad Hossein (Author) ; Dolati, Abolghasem (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Silver is a resistant metal against the oxidation under normal atmospheric conditions, but it reacts readily with sulfur bearing species in the environment and corrodes. Alloying silver with more noble elements, such as Palladium, is a promising approach for increasing corrosion resistance against the sulfur pollutants. The purpose of this research is to develop a plating bath for deposition of Silver-Palladium alloy with acceptable appearance and higher corrosion resistance than pure silver. For this purpose, a bath based on thiosulfate complexing agent was investigated. In this solution, with a bath containing 10 mM of each cation, deposits with palladium content of 6, 11 and 14 % were...

Using Machine Learning Methods to Determine Extreme Weather-Related Outage Scenarios for Optimal Siting and Sizing of Distributed Generation and Energy Storage Facilities to Enhance Distribution Network Resiliencey

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mohammad Yari, Mohammad (Author) ; Hosseini, Hamid (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Natural disasters such as storms, earthquakes, floods, etc. are among the factors that can damage the elements of the power grid and cause them to leave the grid. The result of these outages will be a widespread power outage, which will create many economic and social problems. Therefore, in recent years, the concept of resiliencey has been introduced in power system studies, which examines the extensive outputs in the network as a result of natural disasters. One way to improve the power system resiliency is to strengthen the network by upgrading existing equipment, installing new equipment, and modifying the operation of the network. Among these, the installation of distributed generation...

Developing of MIDA Method in Irregular Structures in Plan with Concentrated Plasticity Model

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Yari, Mohammad Hossein (Author) ; Mofid, Massoud (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this research, modal incremental dynamic analysis (MIDA) has been investigated on three-dimensional structures with irregular plans. The MIDA method is an incremental static analysis that considers higher modes of the structure. In fact, it is a combination of modal pushover (MPO) and incremental dynamic analysis (IDA) methods that incorporate the advantages of both and is much faster than the IDA method. Compared to constant analyses, incremental analysis is more extensive in terms of results and response to earthquakes. Due to the uncertainties in the nature of future earthquakes, engineers use the IDA method to achieve a broader view of the structure's response under potential...

A Monte Carlo simulation of nutrient diffusion and reaction in immobilized cell systems

    , Article Chemical Physics ; Volume 321, Issue 1-2 , 2006 , Pages 34-40 ; 03010104 (ISSN) Yari, B ; Khorasheh, F ; Kheirolomoom, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2006
    Abstract
In this study a Monte Carlo simulation was used to investigate the effect of cell reactivities and particle diffusivities in the cells and matrix on the diffusion and reaction rate constants in gel-immobilized cell systems with different spatial cell configurations. A variety of conditions were examined ranging from instantaneous to very slow reactions with reaction probabilities equal to or less than one, and diffusivity ratios bigger or smaller than one in a spherical domain. In the case of high reactivity (diffusion-limited), the simulation results indicated a decrease in the reaction rate constants when heterogeneity in the cell distribution was increased. In the case of low reactivity...

Fatigue Life Assessment of the Joints in Offshore Structures:Considering Residual Stress Caused By Welding Process and Elliptical Crack

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Yari Boroujeni, Ayoub (Author) ; Farrahi, Gholam Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Offshore structures are valuable structures used in the offshore petroleum and gas fields for the purpose of hydrocarbon production operation. These structures are influenced by wave loads. Sea waves are inherently alternative and for this reason fatigue failure is considered as one of the most important modes of failure in these structures. Joints in these structures are made by tubes and they are called tubular joints. The joining process in manufacturing of these joints is welding. Welding process induces residual stresses, mostly tensional, in the substructure of materials. This tensional residual stress has a destructive effect on fatigue life of the joint and increases probability of...

, Article EPEC 2010 - IEEE Electrical Power and Energy Conference: "Sustainable Energy for an Intelligent Grid", 25 August 2010 through 27 August 2010, Halifax, NS ; 2010 ; 9781424481880 (ISBN) Yari, V ; Nourizadeh, S ; Ranjbar, A. M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
One of important subjects in power system restoration that already is not addressed is frequency control. Operators are often concerned with the size of load and generation, which can be safely increased. With the emphasis on higher utilization of power systems, monitoring of its dynamics is becoming increasingly important. This requires information with higher accuracy and update rates faster than those usually provided by traditional SCADA systems. In addition, it must be synchronized over a wider geographical area than that provided by traditional protection systems. Nowadays, the introduction of Phasor Measurement Units (PMU) and Wide Area Monitoring Systems (WAMS) as well as advances in...

    Abstract
The first control action in power system restoration concerns the generation restart. In the initial phase of restoration, operators are often concerned with load pickup problems. One of the important problems during load pickup is keeping frequency response in allowable range. The aim of this paper is to determine the best sequence of load pickup by hydro and steam units during power system restoration based on frequency response of prime movers. Hydro power plants and combustion turbine units have the capability of black start operation and can be used for early stages of power system restoration. This paper considers hydro power plants for evaluating the stability and frequency response...

    Abstract
In addition to meeting the real-time constraint, power/energy efficiency and high reliability are two vital objectives for real-time embedded systems. Recently, heterogeneous multicore systems have been considered an appropriate solution for achieving joint power/energy efficiency and high reliability. However, power/energy and reliability are two conflict requirements due to the inherent redundancy of fault-tolerance techniques. Also, because of the heterogeneity of the system, the execution of the tasks, especially real-time tasks, in the heterogeneous system is more complicated than the homogeneous system. The proposed method in this paper employs a passive primary/backup technique to...

Performance Analysis for Initial Public Offerings in Tehran Stock Exchange – Comparison of Public and Private Offerings

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Yari, Ali (Author) ; Zamani, Shiva (Supervisor) ; Abdih Tabrizi, Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this thesis, performance of share stocks after Initial Public Offering has been investigated. According to the findings, underpricing and long-term underperformance phenomena have been witnessed in Tehran Stock Exchange and this conforms with the findings of researches in other markets. This study also showed that there is no meaningful difference between private and state-owned offerings in terms of short-term and long-term performance and, in disagreement with the results of similar studies in other stock markets, long-term return of state-owned offerings is less than market return in the same period. Furthermore, this study revealed that amongst various characteristics of offerings,...

    Abstract
Air pollution caused by industrialization is the problem which adversely affects human life. Among air pollutants suspended particles, especially particles smaller than 10 microns (PM10), for their high concentration in air in large cities are the major index as air pollutant. Due to their small size, PM10 can penetrate into the aspiration organs causing harmful effects. The objective of this work is to develop an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) model for prediction of short-term concentration of PM10 in the city of Tehran. Complex mechanism of reactions, numerous types of pollutant materials produced from transportation and industrial activities, variety of sources, difficulties in data...

Physical properties of sputtered amorphous carbon coating

    , Article Journal of Alloys and Compounds ; Volume 513 , 2012 , Pages 135-138 ; 09258388 (ISSN) Yari, M ; Larijani, M. M ; Afshar, A ; Eshghabadi, M ; Shokouhy, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
In this study the effect of deposition temperature and thickness on the physical properties of carbon films deposited by magnetron sputtering PVD was investigated. The results of Raman spectra and grazing incidence XRD (GIXRD) patterns show that the graphitization increases by increasing the deposition temperature. There is a change in deposition mechanism at 400 °C from amorphous carbon deposition to nano-structured graphite deposition. Also by increasing substrate temperature the electrical resistance of carbon films reduces significantly up to 300 °C and then remains largely constant. High intrinsic compressive stress in low temperature deposited carbon films causes cracks and...

Sprue-well Design Optimization by Means of Computer Simulation and Experimental Tests

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Yari Dehkaboudi, Ali (Author) ; Tavakoli, Rouhollah (Supervisor) ; Davami, Parviz (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
In many casting experiments, a well is used in the bottom of downsprue, which causes smooth flow in the runner. When the well is not properly designed, sand erosion happens in the runner and some oxide films and gaseous trap within the melt. These oxide films enter into the cast and decrease its strength and fatigue resistance. In addition, the gaseous trapped in the melt turn into solidification voids within the casting part which deteriorate its mechanical properties. The purpose of this research is to enhance casting efficiency by eliminating the mentioned defects. Modified design of sprue-well is proposed by the means of simulation with ProCAST software. Effective variables considered...

Ring- DVFS: reliability-aware reinforcement learning-based DVFS for real-time embedded systems

    , Article IEEE Embedded Systems Letters ; October , 2020 , Page:1-1 Yeganeh Khaksar, A ; Ansari, M ; Safari, S ; Yari Karin, S ; Ejlali, A ; Sharif University of Technology
Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc  2020
    Abstract
Dynamic Voltage and Frequency Scaling (DVFS) is one of the most popular and exploited techniques to reduce power consumption in multicore embedded systems. However, this technique might lead to a task-reliability degradation because scaling the voltage and frequency increases the fault rate and the worst-case execution time of the tasks. In order to preserve taskreliability at an acceptable level as well as achieving power saving, in this letter, we have proposed an enhanced DVFS method based on reinforcement learning to reduce the power consumption of sporadic tasks at runtime in multicore embedded systems without task-reliability degradation. The reinforcement learner takes decisions based...

Rcci Curvature for Metric-Measure Space via Optimal Transport

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Taheri, Abolfazl (Author) ; Bahraini, Alireza (Supervisor) ; Ranjbar Motlagh, Alireza (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
One of the important questions in mathematics is generalized. In case of metric spaces, one of the questions is: Can we extend notions of Riemannian geometry to arbitrary metric spaces smoothly? Ricci curvature is one of the most important concepts in differential geometry. Ricci curvature is defined for the Riemannian manifold and has many applications in mathematics and physics like Einstein’s equation in relativity theory. There is a good notion for a metric space having “sectional curvature bounded below by K” or “sectional curvature bounded above by K”, due to Alexandrov. Can we define the concept of Ricci curvature in metric space? A motivation for this question comes from Gromov’s...

Detection and a possible link between parvovirus B19 and thyroid cancer

    , Article Tumor Biology ; Volume 39, Issue 6 , 2017 ; 10104283 (ISSN) Etemadi, A ; Mostafaei, S ; Yari, K ; Ghasemi, A ; Chenar, H. M ; Moghoofei, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2017
    Abstract
Human parvovirus B19 (B19) is a small, non-enveloped virus and belongs to Parvoviridae family. B19 persists in many tissues such as thyroid tissue and even thyroid cancer. The main aim of this study was to determine the presence of B19, its association with increased inflammation in thyroid tissue, and thus its possible role in thyroid cancer progression. Studies have shown that virus replication in non-permissive tissue leads to overexpression of non-structural protein and results in upregulation of proinflammatory cytokines such as interleukin 6 and tumor necrosis factor alpha. A total of 36 paraffin-embedded thyroid specimens and serum were collected from patients and 12 samples were used...

Investigation and Characterization of Circulating tumor Cells (CTCs) by the Microfluidics Systems

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Yari, Alireza (Author) ; Vossoughi, Manoucher (Supervisor) ; Alemzadeh, Iran (Supervisor) ; Shamloo, Amir (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Cancer is the second leading cause of death among humans as one of the major human concerns. More than 500,000 people die of cancer each year in the United States alone. Cancer mortality is mainly due to cancer metastasis. Metastasis is the escape of cancer cells from a primary tumor, the circulation of cells in the circulatory system (CTSs), the penetration of/from vessel wall, and the formation of a secondary tumor. It is still not clear how the cells survive in the circulatory system, along with the mechanical pressures and stresses that exist in the body's capillary channals. In this study, a microcirculation model for circulating cells with barriers was designed and constructed by the...

Seismic design codes reduce loads by using response modification factor. Because of the reserved strength in structural elements and capacity of structure to dissipate energy, structures can be designed for lower seismic loads. This factor has modified over time. In this thesis, the effect of the reduction in behavior factor on the response of two kinds of reinforced concrete systems were evaluated. Moment resisting frames and dual systems with different heights and regularity in plan, heve been design according to the behavior factor which is recommended in the 3rd edition of the Iranian codes of practice for seismic resistance design of buildings (Standard No. 2800). Drift and...
