, Article Proceedings of the 30th Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society, EMBS'08 - "Personalized Healthcare through Technology", 20 August 2008 through 25 August 2008, Vancouver, BC ; 2008 , Pages 4011-4014 ; 9781424418152 (ISBN) Yousefi Rizi, F ; Ahmadian, A. Abstract
The main problem with airway segmentation methods which significantly influences their accuracy is leakage into the extra-luminal regions due to thinness of the airway wall during the process of segmentation. This phenomenon potentially makes large regions of lungparenchyma to be wrongly identified as airways. A solution to this problem in the previous methods was based on leak detection followed by reducing leakage during the segmentation process. This has been dealt with adjusting the segmentation parameters and performing the re-segmentation process on the pre-segmented area. This makes the algorithm very exhaustive and more dependent on the user interaction. The method presented here is...

    Abstract
Segmentation of the human airway tree from volumetric computed tomography images is an important stage for many clinical applications such as virtual bronchoscopy. The main challenges of previously developed methods are to deal with two problems namely, leaking into the surrounding lung parenchyma during segmentation and the need to manually adjust the parameters. To overcome these problems, a multi-seeded fuzzy based region growing approach in conjuction with the spatial information of voxels is proposed. Comparison with a commonly used region growing segmentation algorithm shows that the proposed method retrieves more accurate results by achieving the specificity and sensitivity of 98.81%...

    Abstract
A systematic change of HZSM-5 (HZ5) as a catalyst of the methanol to aromatics (MTA) reaction was undertaken by employing a fixed-bed tubular-type reactor under ambient pressure, applying a weight hourly space velocity (WHSV) of 2 h-1 at 375 °C, as the first report on the application of low-Si/Al-ratio alkaline-[Mo,Na]-HZSM-5 in the MTA process. To characterize the surface and textural properties of the catalysts, powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), nitrogen adsorption/desorption, temperature-programmed desorption of ammonia (NH3-TPD), pyridine-infrared spectroscopy (Py-IR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) methods were employed. Gas chromatography (GC) and...

Computational elucidation of the aging time effect on zeolite synthesis selectivity in the presence of water and diquaternary ammonium iodide

    , Article Physical Chemistry Chemical Physics ; Volume 23, Issue 37 , 2021 , Pages 21240-21248 ; 14639076 (ISSN) Ghanbari, B ; Kazemi Zangeneh, F ; Sastre, G ; Moeinian, M ; Marhabaie, S ; Taheri Rizi, Z ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
An example of zeolite selectivity (MFI → MOR) driven by synthesis aging time has been studied. Using N,N,N′,N′-tetramethyl-N,N′-dipropyl-ethylenediammonium diiodide (TMDP) as an organic structure-directing agent (OSDA), the zeolite phases obtained at 2 h (MFI 97%), 8 h (MFI 84%, MOR 16%) and 24 h (MFI 43%, MOR 57%) have been characterized by powder X-ray diffraction. The results suggest that at intermediate aging time, namely 8 h and 24 h, the dominant phase (MFI) is displaced by MOR. Different techniques (FT-IR, Raman, 13C MAS NMR, TGA/DTG and HC microanalysis) have been employed to verify the OSDA integrity and occlusion inside the zeolite micropores as well as to quantify the water and...

    Abstract
We know that Science has been one of the most influential cultural revolutions in recent centuries, and that, due to its remarkable successes and achievements, it has rapidly spread across many societies and cultures. Scientific theories have attracted the attention of many thinkers, but among these theories, Darwin's theory of evolution has attracted more attention in that it also claims to explain the origin of humans. One outcome of this theory is that man, and consequently all his attributes, including his cognitive powers, language, and culture (which are unique among the attributes of other species), came into being through a process of evolution and natural selection. But can the...

    Abstract
Different nonlinearities in micro-electro-mechanical resonators lead to various nonlinear behaviors such as chaotic motion which can affect the resonator performance. As a result, it is important to properly identify and analyze the chaotic regions in resonators. In this paper, a novel method is proposed for prediction of the chaos in the micro- and nano-electro-mechanical resonators. Based on the proposed method, first an accurate analytical solution for the dynamics behavior of the nano-resonators is derived using the multiple scales method up to the second order. The results obtained by this analytical solution are validated by comparing them with the numerical ones. Using the analytical...

    Abstract
Most sulfide oxidizing bioreactors are based on pure cultures or artificial mixes of microorganisms with strict requirements for growth, which make the system unstable and do not guarantee their long term performance. The ultimate goal of this study is to develop a natural mix of chemotrophic bacteria that may be applied anaerobically for the treatment of sour gas. Activated sludge from local municipal wastewater treatment plant that was maintained in endogenous anaerobic conditions for one year was used in this study. Total suspended solids (TSS) and volatile suspended solids (VSS) of the sludge was 22 gl-1 and 14.3 gl-1, respectively. A glass culture vessel had a volume of 0.65 L was used...

    Abstract
Building envelope is the sole interface with outdoors that can lie in the level of integrating control strategies to enhance occupant’s comfort and building performance. However, in the literature, there is still a lack of multi-purpose control strategies which can balance diverse and antagonistic aspects of occupant comfort while keeping the building energy consumption under control. Therefore, this research proposed an integrated simulation-based workflow using EnergyPlus and Python-based package, OpyPlus, to adjust a roller shade for single occupied office space in a hot and arid climate. The developed system aims to improve both occupant’s visual and thermal comfort considering daylight...

    Silver cubes

    , Article Graphs and Combinatorics ; Volume 24, Issue 5 , 2008 , Pages 429-442 ; 09110119 (ISSN) Ghebleh, M ; Goddyn, L.A ; Mahmoodian, E. S ; Verdian Rizi, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
An n × n matrix A is said to be silver if, for i = 1,2,...,n, each symbol in {1,2,...,2n - 1} appears either in the ith row or the ith column of A. The 38th International Mathematical Olympiad asked whether a silver matrix exists with n = 1997. More generally, a silver cube is a triple (K n d , I, c) where I is a maximum independent set in a Cartesian power of the complete graph K n , and c : V(K n d)→ {1,2,...,d(n-1)+1} is a vertex colouring where, for ν ∈ I, the closed neighbourhood N[ν] sees every colour. Silver cubes are related to codes, dominating sets, and those with n a prime power are also related to finite geometry. We present here algebraic constructions, small examples, and a...

Elimination of Blocker Signals in Radio Receivers Using Time-Varying Circuits

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Rajaei Rizi, Mohammad Mahdi (Author) ; Fotowat Ahmadi, Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
According to increasingly utilization of different frequency spots, RF receivers are allways under the threats of compression and desensitization because of large out-of-band or in-band blockers. The IC technologies afford fast, low-resistance switches as scaling keeps going on. With this mind, the Linear Periodic Time Varying circuits, in which the switches play the most dominant role, will be a sensible candidate for the concerns of blocker detection and rejection. Furthermore, nowadays’ receivers should be reconfigureable so as to be tunable at different frequency bands and satisfy contrastive standards. In this regard, the LPTV filters provide vast range of tunablity not only with...

Separation of Re and Mo from roasting-dust leach-liquor using solvent extraction technique by TBP

    , Article Separation and Purification Technology ; Volume 86 , February , 2012 , Pages 143-148 ; 13835866 (ISSN) Keshavarz Alamdari, E ; Darvishi, D ; Haghshenas, D. F ; Yousefi, N ; Sadrnezhaad, S. K ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Re/Mo separation is studied by a new solvent extraction technique which is based on extraction mechanisms of the constituent metals. Based on McCabe-Thiele plots, a flow diagram has been proposed for separation and purification of Re over Mo. Re-recovery section of the diagram shows that Re is extracted when major amount of Mo is removed. For removal of the remained Mo, a two-stage extraction is required at pH = 2 and V a/V o = 1. In order to obtain Re, the resulted aqueous phase is stripped by adding sulfuric acid. According to the results, while more Re is extracted at less pH, optimum extraction of Mo happens at pH = 1.2. Re selectivity over Mo maximizes by approaching of the pH to zero
