    Abstract
An experimental study has been conducted to investigate the effect of silica nanoparticle halos on the stability of the zirconia aqueous suspension. The results of turbidity measurements showed that addition of nanoparticles to the suspension increases the stability of the zirconia suspension for all pH values. The achieved stability refers to the formation of nanoparticle halos around the microparticles that can be observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) imaging. The best stabilization is achievable when zirconia microparticles are at the isoelectric point. The minimum stabilization occurs when microparticles have relatively high zeta potential and the force between micro and...

    Abstract
Particle manipulation using laser beam is almost a new and contactless technique in particulate sciences. The method is based on the radiation pressure of light photons on the particles suspended in a semi-transparent fluid. Applications of the technique mainly cover microscopic separation and detection of biological objects. In this work, a theoretical study is conducted to investigate the hydrodynamic and thermal effects on a particulate flow in a mini-channel. Laser thermal effects are studied as a result of light absorption either in fluid or dispersed phase. An analytical model is developed to be the real simulator of a test bed developed by the authors. The main objective of performed...

    Abstract
Optical propulsion via laser source is a relatively new and non-contact tool for manipulation of microscopic objects. The method is based on the radiation pressure of light photons on the micron sized particles. Applications of the technique mainly cover microscopic separation, purification and cellular studies. Due to high power intensity of laser beams, absorption of light may result in heating and damage of objects to be manipulated. In addition, the difference between heated and cold zones can lead to a naturally driven flow around the objects. So precisely controlled conditions should be set up to avoid thermal effects. In this work, a theoretical study is conducted to investigate the...

    Abstract
Optical separation, which is a contactless and accurate technique, has been mostly used to manipulate single particles. This work mainly aims to present an effective technique for optical propulsion and separation of a group of microscopic particles that are suspended in liquids. An experimental study is conducted to assess the effect of radiation pressure of a high-power laser on a dilute dispersion of microparticles in water using microscopic image analysis. Results of separation experiments indicate that the manipulation mechanism is capable of sorting the microscopic particles in two size classes. Compared to common optical separators, this configuration has a benefit of separating many...

A new experimental approach to investigate the induced force and velocity fields on a particulate manipulation mechanism

    Abstract
Identification and minimization of error sources are important issues in experimental investigations. Mainly in micro-scale problems, precise settings should be applied to high-tech test beds to reduce disturbance and induced motion. An experimental study is conducted to assess the role of induced forces and velocity fields in a particulate system used for particle identification and separation. Two main effects caused by disturbances are sampling errors and induced motion in the channel, either on fluid or dispersed phases. Different disturbance scenarios are implemented on the test bed and then the system response is reported. In order to assess induced motion as a result of applied...

Quality of experience (QoE)-based joint admission control and power allocation with guaranteed data rate

    Abstract
Service providers use objective models to map system quality of service (QoS) conditions to an estimated mean opinion score (MOS) in order to assess users' quality of experience (QoE). In contrast with earlier studies, we propose a hybrid model for call services that models the MOS in terms of the received signal strength indicator (RSSI) using a machine learning approach. Unlike most existing studies, which focus on maximizing the sum-MOS of all users, we aim to maximize the average number of satisfied users in order to allocate optimal power to each user while ensuring the minimum data rate for each of them. Simulation results show that the proposed hybrid model outperforms the...

Quality of Experience (QoE) Modeling and Resource Allocations based on QoE in Wireless Communication Networks

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Zabetian, Negar (Author) ; Hossein Khalaj, Babak (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The quality of experience (QoE) is a qualitative metric of users’ satisfaction with the received service. The competition for providing services is fierce, and the one who satisfies the most users wins. Therefore, the method of evaluating user satisfaction is important. In this dissertation, a model for VoIP QoE assessment is proposed. In the proposed method, appropriate features for measuring the quality of voice calls are first extracted solely from the degraded audio signals. Then, an ensemble learning model is created to estimate MOS, acceptance, and probabilistic metrics accurately and close to real opinions. Then, the performance of the model in terms of correlation coefficient and...

A low-distortion self-oscillating power factor correction circuit for low-cost applications

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics ; Vol. 61, issue. 11 , 2014 , pp. 6050-6060 ; ISSN: 02780046 Marvi, M ; Fotowat-Ahmady, A ; Kananian, S ; Zabetian, A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Self-oscillating converters operating in the critical conduction mode are popular in low power applications because of their simplicity and low cost. However, these converters are not suited for Power Factor Correction (PFC) because the peak switch current is controlled to regulate the output voltage and does not follow the shape of the line voltage waveform. A new control circuit implementation is proposed for a self-oscillating boost converter to achieve power factor correction. A full featured design example is provided which can be simplified for use in various cost sensitive applications such as electronic lighting, etc. This wide input voltage range self-oscillating PFC prototype...

    Abstract
The air distribution is the main factor of contaminant transportation in cleanrooms. The experimental method is the most reliable one for investigation of flow field, which the difficulties associated with it, has limited not only the examination of the flow field in cleanrooms, but also the improvement of their qualities. Most of the experimental researches in indoor air quality concern conventional rooms and do not take into account specific supply-exhaust diffuser configurations, which are used in cleanrooms. Using small-scale models can reduce the complexity and the cost of measurements. In this research, the 3D velocity field of a small-scale cleanroom is measured in three different...

    Abstract
Contactless and nonintrusive methods in particulate manipulation have been considered by many investigations. Particularly the use of these methods in characterization of micro and nano flows is in the focus of interests. Laser usage in the particulate systems has been dramatically increased during the last two decades. Laser can be used either as an illustration or excitation source in these systems. So-called optical tweezers use the laser beam for particle manipulation and characterization based on the hydrodynamic interaction of the laser beam with particles. There are numerous works being conducted in the field of particulate manipulation and characterization using laser beam.Present...

    Abstract
Using multiple antennas at the transmit and receive sides of a passive radar brings both the benefits of MIMO radar and passive radar. However one of the obstacles arisen in such configuration is the receive antennas placement in proper positions so that the radar performance is improved. Here we just consider the case of positioning one receiver among multiple illuminators of opportunity. Indeed it is a start for the solution of optimizing the geometry of the multiple receivers in a passive radar

    Abstract
In this paper, we consider an integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) system with wireless power transfer (WPT) where an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-based radar serves a group of energy-limited communication users in addition to its sensing functionality. In this architecture, the radar senses the environment in phase 1 (namely sensing phase) and mean-while, the communications users (nodes) harvest and store the energy from the radar transmit signal. The stored energy is then used for information transmission from the nodes to UAV in phase 2, i.e., uplink phase. Performance of the radar system depends on the transmit signal as well as the receive filter; the energy of the transmit...

    Abstract
One of the important obstacles in MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) radars is the issue of designing proper transmit signals. Indeed, the capability of signal design is a significant advantage in MIMO radars, through which, the system can achieve much better performance. Many different aspects of this performance improvement have been considered yet, and the transmit signals have been designed to attain such goal, e.g., getting higher SNR or better detector's performance at the receiver. However, an important tool for evaluating the radar's performance is its ambiguity function. In this paper, we consider the problem of transmit signal design, in order to optimize the ambiguity function...

    Detection-localization tradeoff in MIMO radars

    Abstract
Two gains play key roles in recently developed MIMO wireless communication systems: "spatial diversity" gain and "spatial multiplexing" gain. The diversity gain refers to the capability to decrease the error rate of the MIMO channel, while the multiplexing gain implicitly refers to the amount of increase in the capacity of the MIMO channel. It has been shown that there is a fundamental tradeoff between these two types of gains, meaning interplay between increasing reliability (via an increase in the diversity gain) and increasing data rate (via an increase in the multiplexing gain). On the other hand, recently, MIMO radars have attracted much attention for their superior ability to enhance...

Antenna placement and power allocation optimization in MIMO detection

    Abstract
It is a well known fact that using multiple antennas at transmit and receive sides improves the detection performance. However, in such multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) configuration, proper positioning of transmitters and receivers is a big challenge that can have significant influence on the performance of the overall system. In addition, determining the power of each transmitter under a total power constraint is a problem that should be solved in order to enhance the performance and coverage of such a system. In this paper, we design the Neyman-Pearson detector under the Rayleigh scatter model and use it to introduce a criterion for the antenna placement at both transmit and receive...

Ambiguity function of MIMO radar with widely separated antennas

    Abstract
There has been much interest, recently, towards exploiting the Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) technique in radar. It is shown that using multiple antennas at transmit and receive sides can improve the performance of the system. However, in order to analyze the system's performance, its ambiguity function, i.e. the ambiguity function of a MIMO radar, is needed to be defined. In this paper, beginning from the information theoretic definitions, we derive such function, specifically for a MIMO radar with widely separated antennas

    Abstract
By combining the two ideas of MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) and PCL (Passive Coherent Location) in radar, one can achieve the advantages of both recently developed techniques simultaneously. While using multiple antennas at the receive side provides a spatial diversity of the object to be detected, using multiple illuminators of opportunity, most importantly, makes the radar covert to the interceptors. One obstacle in such MIMO configuration is choosing the positions of the receive antennas. In this paper, after analyzing the Neyman-Pearson detector for the DVB-T based PCL, we introduce the probability of missed detection as a criterion to place the receive antenna. Here, we only...

    Abstract
One of the most important obstacles in passive radar applications is removing the direct signal from the target channel. Otherwise, week echoes from the targets in the target channel would be ignored due to the limited dynamic range of the system. One of the most effective techniques in this field is using adaptive filters. In this paper various adaptive filters are introduced and their performances are shown and compared

    Abstract
It has been shown that using multiple antennas in a radar system improves the performance considerably, since multiple target echoes are received from different aspect angles of the target. In this way, the target detection is improved. However, when using multiple antennas, some problems, such as designing the transmit signals, synchronization, etc. emerge that should be solved. One of such problems is the receiver placement. Receiver placement deals with choosing a proper position for the receive antenna in order to optimize the whole system's performance. In this paper, a receiver placement procedure based on improving the radar ambiguity function is proposed for the case of a multisite...
