Simualtion of Two-Phase Gas-Solid Flow in Electrostatic Precipitator to Increase Particulate Collection Efficiency Using Plate with Aerodynamic Bulges

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Yadollahpour Kebria, Hossein (Author) ; Darbandi, Masoud (Supervisor) ; Zakeri, Ramin (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Electrostatic precipitators (ESPs) are widely recognized for their pivotal role in the collection of dust and particulate matter. ESPs are essential to ensure a particle- and dust-free atmosphere in industrial and non-industrial work environments. With the ever-increasing significance of maintaining air quality at the desired standards, the role of ESPs has gained paramount importance in mitigating airborne pollutants and protecting public health. Achieving higher collection efficiency for particulate matter and attaining cleaner air is of great importance in the design and selection of precipitators. On the other hand, particle collection efficiency is considered as a crucial factor for ESP...

Current density in the intermediate state of superconductors

    , Article Superconductor Science and Technology ; Volume 17, Issue 10 , 2004 , Pages 1189-1191 ; 09532048 (ISSN) Zakeri, Kh ; Alizad, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    2004
    Abstract
In this investigation we have taken the viewpoint of the Landau theory for the normal state and have suggested a covariant equation for current density. This suggestion is based on the exact analysis of electrodynamic relations in the intermediate state of superconductors. Our analysis is restricted to the simplest electrodynamic relations. At first we have employed Maxwell's equations with the general Ohm-London equation and have found the general covariant current which takes a covariant form after Lorentz transformation. Finally we have checked it by considering two inertial frames in a simple state

The Political Economy Aspects of the Redistributive Role of Government in a General Equilibrium Micro-founded Macro Model

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Zakeri, Hassan (Author) ; Nili, Masoud (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The role of government in economy has been a controversial subject in economics. Lately, there has been some fundamental change in evaluating this subject. One could mention two of these as 1) realizing the importance of micro-founded macro model for evaluating policy, and 2) taking into consideration the rent-seeking behavior of politicians. In this research, a general equilibrium in a micro-founded macro model will be discussed and then in political economics framework, the effect of government on this equilibrium will be investigated. Only the redistribution role of government has been considered. First, the model in which a benevolent government is seeking optimal policy is Discussed....

Molecular Dynamics Simulation of Electroosmotic Flow in Nano scales

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Zakeri, Ramin (Author) ; Darbandi, Masoud (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Due to important applications and benefits of mass transfer in engineering and especially in nano-scales engineering, nano-science researchers have focused on this field. Considerably, in classical fluid dynamics applications, the fluid can be transported using differential pressure gradient. But the classical methods require moving components, which are usually expensive and not applicable in nano-sizes. To avoid these problems in nano-size transportation, we can use electro-osmotic process to perform mass transfer in low transfer rates. In electro-osmotic process, we can move electrolyte solvent with the aid of an external electrical field. Due to importance of this process in...

    2004
    Abstract
In this investigation, we have studied the kinetics and mechanism of desorption of CO from the Cu(110) surface using a new Monte Carlo simulation and putting emphasis on high order lateral interaction. According to our simulated TPD spectra, for β 0 = 10 K/s the maximum desorption rate occurs at Tm = 218.6 K. Furthermore, analysis of simulated TPD spectra of CO desorption shows that it is strongly lateral-interactive and results an activation energy of CO desorption from Cu(110) that is Ed = 66.6 Kj/mol. These simulated results are compared with other reported results and show excellent agreement. After that we have investigated the kinetics and mechanism of desorption of CO2 from the...

    , Article Proceedings of the IEEE Conference on Nanotechnology ; 2013 , Pages 446-451 ; 19449399 (ISSN) ; 9781479906758 (ISBN) Darbandi, M ; Jafari, S ; Zakeri, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
We use the Dissipative Particle Dynamics (DPD) method to simulate the variation in the configuration of a polymer chain, whose two ends are fixed in a nanochannel, subject to bulk motion of fluid particles. We aim to find suitable relations between the polymer chain curvature and the mean flow velocity magnitudes. In this regard, we introduce some important parameters, which can effectively affect the polymer chain curvature and we examine their magnitudes on the amount of polymer chain deflection. In fact, our main objective is to quantify the relation between some major flow parameters, possibly with different polymer chain properties. For example, we show that different flow velocity...

    Abstract
The present study was undertaken to investigate a kinetic model for cell growth evaluation and biopolymer production by Xanthomonas campestris in a laboratory-scale batch fermentor. The optimum conditions selected for biopolymer production were 30 °C for media temperature, 500 rpm for agitation rate, 65 g/l for sugarcane concentration and 1.5 vvm for air flow rate. A detailed, unstructured, mathematical kinetic model is presented here for batch production of xanthan biopolymer from X. campestris. Set of ordinary differential equations were developed as logistic model for X. campestris growth and logistic incorporated Luedeking–Piret model for xanthan production. These models would offer more...

A Use-case-based Methodology for Situational Method Engineering (SME)

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Zakeri Fard, Hanieh (Author) ; Ramsin, Raman (Supervisor)
    Abstract
After using software development methodologies for decades, developers have realized that there is no general-purpose methodology that suits every project situation. The need for project-specific methodologies has resulted in the emergence of Situational Method Engineering (SME), which focuses on the construction/adaptation of a methodology according to the specific characteristics of the project at hand. In this approach, the first step is to precisely define the project situation and methodology requirements, based on which the target methodology will then be constructed. Requirements Engineering (RE) in SME is concerned with the elicitation, specification, modeling and validation of...

On the complexity of isoperimetric problems on trees [electronic resource]

, Article Discrete Applied Mathematics ; Volume 160 Issue 1-2, January, 2012 Pages 116-131 Daneshgar, A. (Amir) ; Javadi, Ramin ; Sharif Univercity of Technology
    Abstract
This paper is aimed at investigating some computational aspects of different isoperimetric problems on weighted trees. In this regard, we consider different connectivity parameters called minimum normalized cuts/isoperimetric numbers defined through taking the minimum of the maximum or the mean of the normalized outgoing flows from a set of subdomains of vertices, where these subdomains constitute a partition/subpartition. We show that the decision problem for the case of taking k-partitions and the maximum (called the max normalized cut problem NCP^M), and the other two decision problems for the mean version (referred to as IPP^m and NCP^m) are NP-complete problems for weighted trees. On...

    Abstract
In this paper, we present our results about simulation of 2D-EOF in Nano/Micro scales porous media using lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) in micro-channel for EOF. The high efficient numerical code use strongly high nonlinear Poisson Boltzmann equation to predicate behavior of EOF in complex geometry. The results are developed with precisely investigation of several effective parameters on permeability of EOF, such as geometry (channel height and number and location of charge), external electric field, thickness of Debye length (ionic concentration), and zeta potential. Our results are in excellent agreement with available analytical results. Our results show that for certain external electric...

    Abstract
A crude phenolic glycolipid extract from Mycobacterium bovis BCG was fractionated by column chromatography. A reversed-phase high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method with UV detection at 275nm was developed for simultaneous detection and separation of phenolic glycolipids (PGLs) in Mycobacterium bovis BCG. This analysis provides a good resolution. Different solvent systems and columns for HPLC were compared. A system composed of acetonitrile-water in the ratio of 0→80% at a flow rate of 0.8 mL/min and C8 analytical column were found to be optimum for HPLC of the phenolic glycolipids. This simple method is therefore appropriate to purify these compounds present in M. bovis extract...

    Abstract
Different techniques including toluene-ethanol, guanidine hydrochloride, guanidine hydrochloride-EDTA, lysozyme, lysozyme-EDTA and sonication treatments were used to extract penicillin G acylase from Escherichia coli ATCC 11105 cells. The obtained results show that penicillin G acylase extraction by guanidine-EDTA treatment is more specific in comparison to the other applied methods. The maximum specific activity of the enzyme (5.61 U/mg), i.e. the maximum purification was found when 1 M guanidine + 100 mM EDTA solution was used for penicillin G acylase extraction at culture condition including 0.50% (w/v) yeast extract as carbon source. In such a condition more than 95% of the enzyme was...

    Abstract
The kinetics of the enzymic reaction of penicillin G acylase from a mutant of Escherichia coli ATCC 11105 in forward and reverse directions were studied and the kinetic constants determined. Results show that the enzyme is inhibited by excess substrate, penicillin G (Pen G), and by both products. The non-competitive inhibition by 6-aminopenicillanic acid (6-APA) and competitive inhibition by phenylacetic acid were observed for the ordered uni bi deacylation reaction in the forward direction. The optimum pH value for the reverse acylation reaction was 5.7. The bi uni mechanism for the reverse reaction was investigated and the inhibitory effects of the substrates, 6-APA and phenyl acetic acid,...

    Abstract
Solid-State Disks (SSDs) offer advantages such as no mechanical parts, low power consumption, and constant read latency. SSDs, however, suffer from shortcomings such as erase-before-update requirement and limited endurance.Redundant Array of Independent Disks (RAID) are commonly used in storage servers to enhance performance and reliability. To further enhance system performance, one can employ efficient Input/Output (I/O) scheduling algorithms suitedto the disk structure in RAID-based systems. In this thesis, we present an I/O scheduling method to improve endurance and performance of SSD-based RAID systems. In the proposed I/O scheduling algorithm, read requests are sent directly to SSDs and...

Variation of the lateral Casimir force between corrugated conductors due to the presence of a dielectric slab

    , Article Physical Review A - Atomic, Molecular, and Optical Physics ; Volume 86, Issue 2 , 2012 ; 10502947 (ISSN) Sarabadani, J ; Soltani, M ; Zakeri, P ; Jafari, S. A ; Sharif University of Technology
    APS  2012
    Abstract
We investigate the lateral Casimir interaction between two corrugated conductors when they enclose a dielectric slab. The magnitude of the lateral Casimir force can be changed due to the presence of a dielectric slab between them, and it strongly depends on the thickness (d) and dielectric function of the slab and also on the position of the slab with respect to the conductors. In addition, the distance between the conductors (H) and their corrugation wavelengths play important roles in tuning the lateral Casimir interaction. For fixed d and H, quite interestingly, the magnitude of the lateral Casimir force varies when the position of the slab with respect to conductors changes, and it has a...
