Numerical Simulation of Spray and Combustion in a Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) Engine
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Hosseini, Vahid (Supervisor) ; Afshin, Hossein (Supervisor)
Abstract
Energy crisis is one of the crises which human beings face these days. Optimizing the operation of energy consuming machines is one of the most effective methods in decreasing energy consumption. Gasoline direct injection engines as new achievements in automobile and propulsion industry, reduce fuel consumption by increasing the engine efficiency. In these types of engines, a high pressure injector injects fuel directly into the combustion chamber instead of injecting fuel in intake ports. Thus, because of evaporation cooling, the mixture cools down, so the possibility of achieving higher compression ratios in higher engine speeds and loads, without occurrence of knock is provided. Increase...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Shah Mansouri, Hamed (Supervisor) ; Namvar, Mehrzad (Co-Supervisor)
Abstract
IoT-based systems use cloud computing servers that are generally far away from them to perform tasks. Whenever there is a computational task that requires heavy and complex processing, the problem of offloading decision is to identify the best computing server to perform the processing related to this task. Numerous dynamic factors affect the solution to this problem.Optimization in energy consumption of the device that has generated a task alongside reducing its calculation delay can be applied in solving the offloading problem. The optimization problem that is formed to minimize the energy consumption in the offloading decision is an integer programming problem that is generally difficult...
Assessment of Risk Arising from Changes in Implied Volatility in Option Portfolios
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Arian, Hamid Reza (Supervisor) ; Zamani, Shiva (Supervisor)
Abstract
This study delves into the intricate realm of risk evaluation within the domain of specific financial derivatives, notably options. Unlike other financial instruments, like bonds, options are susceptible to broader risks. A distinctive trait characterizing this category of instruments is their non-linear price behavior relative to their pricing parameters. Consequently, evaluating the risk of these securities is notably more intricate when juxtaposed with analogous scenarios involving fixed-income instruments, such as debt securities. A paramount facet in options risk assessment is the inherent uncertainty stemming from first-order fluctuations in the underlying asset’s volatility. The...

An efficient tabu search algorithm for the single row facility location problem [electronic resource]
, Article European Journal Of Operational Research ; Vol. 205, No. 1, pp. 98-105 ; Eshghi, Kourosh ; Sharif University of Technology
Abstract
The general goal of the facility layout problem is to arrange a given number of facilities to minimize the total cost associated with the known or projected interactions between them. One of the special classes of the facility layout problem is the Single Row Facility Layout Problem (SRFLP), which consists of finding an optimal linear placement of rectangular facilities with varying dimensions on a straight line. This paper first presents and proves a theorem to find the optimal solution of a special case of SRFLP. The results obtained by this theorem prove to be very useful in reducing the computational efforts when a new algorithm based on tabu search for the SRFLP is proposed in this...

Abstract
Self-repairing is not an advanced ability of articular cartilage. Tissue engineering has provided a novel way for reconstructing cartilage using natural polymers because of their biocompatibility and bio-functionality. The purpose of cartilage tissue engineering is to design a scaffold with proper pore structure and similar biological and mechanical properties to the native tissue. In this study, porous scaffolds prepared from gelatin, chitosan and silk fibroin were blended with varying ratios. Between the blends of chitosan (C), gelatin (G) and silk fibroin (S), the scaffold with the weight per volume ratio of 2:2:3 (w/v) showed the most favorable and higher certain properties than the...

Needle Steering in Soft Tissue
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Jahed, Mehran (Supervisor)
Abstract
Medical needle interventions are a common technique for accessing tissue structures. In these procedures, needles are used, for example, to extract biopsy samples, brachytherapy, and to insert drugs. In TRUS guided prostate brachytherapy application, Physicians used ulterasound imaging to steer the needle and insert radioactive seeds into cancerous tumors to irradiate surrounding tissue over several months. Prostate rotation, deformation, and unavailability of imaging data during part of the insertion path result in misplaced seeds. To overcome these problems, in this research, we modeled the prostate, its membrane and the surrounding fatty tissue as linearly elastic homogenous material, and...

The overall structure of the system consists of high-level programming interfaces for implementation and expression of machine learning algorithms by the user, which will be available as libraries in a high-level programming language such as Python, Ruby, and Julia. These interfaces allow the user to evaluate their...
Analysis of Temporal Stability and Transferability of Trip Distribution Models Considering Urban Development Patterns: The Case of Shiraz
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Shafahi, Yousef (Supervisor)
Abstract
Trip distribution is the second step of the four-step travel demand modeling. Like other travel demand models, the most important objective of trip distribution models generation is forecasting the travel data of a year in the future. On the one hand, extensive changes in cities’ urban structures and people’s travel behavior during the years brings up the essential question of how temporally stable and transferable trip distribution models are? This question becomes even more important when the more complex structure of trip distribution models compared to models such as trip generation is considered. On the other hand, it is logical to assume that the consideration of the effects of urban...

In this study Porous scaffolds prepared from silk fibroin, chitosan and gelatin blends with varying ratio of silk fibroin and gelatin by freeze drying method were characterized for physicochemical, mechanical and biological properties. Among the...
Biomechanical Effects of Intervertebral Disc Nucleotomy Surgery on Adjacent Joints Using a Coupled Musculoskeletal Finite Element Model
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Arjmand, Navid (Supervisor)
Abstract
According to studies, low back pain is one of the most common and costly musculoskeletal disorders. Herniation of intervertebral discs exerts pressure on the nerves, causing pain. To alleviate this, physicians perform a procedure called nucleotomy, which removes the disc's nucleus pulposus to reduce pressure, retract the disc, and relieve pain. Accurate estimation of spinal forces during activities is essential for injury prevention, activity correction, and improved surgical techniques. Although laboratory studies on humans or cadavers are valid, they are often invasive and limited to simple scenarios, necessitating precise computational models for comprehensive biomechanical analysis....

Abstract
A reaction-diffusion equation on [0, 1]d with the heat conductivity k > 0, a polynomial drift term and an additive noise, fractional in time with H > 1/2, and colored in space, is considered. We have shown the existence, uniqueness and uniform boundedness of solution with respect to k Also we show that if k tends to infinity, then the corresponding solutions of the equation converge to a process satisfying a stochastic ordinary differential equation

Abstract
In this study, a novel technique based on adaptive fading extended Kalman filter for atomic force microscopy is proposed to directly estimate the topography of a sample surface without needing any control system. While in conventional imaging techniques, the scanning speed or the bandwidth is limited due to a relatively large settling time, the method proposed in this research is able to address this issue and estimate the topography throughout transient oscillation of the microcantilever. With this aim, an estimation process using an adaptive fading extended Kalman filter (augmented with forgetting factor) as the system observer is designed and coupled with the system dynamics to obtain...
New method of determination for pressure and shear frictions in the ring rolling process as analytical function
, Article Journal of Solid Mechanics ; Vol. 6, issue. 3 , 2014 , pp. 322-333 ; ISSN: 20083505 ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
Ring rolling is one of the most significant methods for producing rings with highly precise dimensions and superior qualities such as high strength uniformity, all accomplished without wasting any materials. In this article, we have achieved analytical formulas for calculating the pressure and shear friction over the contact arcs between the rollers and ring in the ring rolling process for the material in general nonlinear hardening property. We have also asserted the best mathematical model to predict friction for rolling processes. The method we use is based on calculating the analytical stress distribution. In other words, by using of Saint-Venan principal the stress components are...

Abstract
In our previous work, we presented a Z-based formalism, called NZ, by which one can explicitly specify bounded, unbounded, erratic, angelic, demonic, loose, strict, singular, and plural nondeterminism. The NZ notation is mainly based on a new notion of operation schemas, called multi-schema. Since the operations of the Z schema calculus do not work on multi-schemas anymore, in this paper we augment NZ with a new set of schema calculus operations that can be applied on multi-schemas as well as ordinary operation schemas. To demonstrate the usability of the resulting formalism, we show how this formalism can assist to model game-like situations and concurrent systems as two well-known classes...
