A comprehensive digital protection scheme for low-voltage microgrids with inverter-based and conventional distributed generations

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery ; Volume 32, Issue 1 , 2017 , Pages 441-452 ; 08858977 (ISSN) Zarei, S. F ; Parniani, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Microgrid (MG) protection is one of the main challenges in proliferation of microgrids. Due to limited fault current feeding of inverter-based distributed generations (DGs), in islanded operation of MG, protection problems become more complicated; and, therefore, conventional protection strategies cannot be applied. Hence, new protection methods that are applicable in islanded and grid-connected modes of operation are necessary. In this paper, a comprehensive digital-relay based protection is introduced for the protection of MGs. The proposed method includes protection of lines, distributed generations, and the point of common coupling. The structure and graphical schematic of the proposed...

Practical method to predict an upper bound for minimum variance track-to-track fusion

    , Article IET Signal Processing ; Volume 11, Issue 8 , 2017 , Pages 961-968 ; 17519675 (ISSN) Zarei Jalalabadi, M ; Malaek, S. M. B ; Sharif University of Technology
    2017
    Abstract
This study deals with the problem of track-to-track fusion in a sensor network when the correlation terms between the estimates of the agents are unknown. The proposed method offers an upper bound for the optimal minimum variance fusion rule through construction of the correlation terms according to an optimisation scheme. In general, the upper bound filter provides an estimate that is more conservative than the optimal estimate generated by the minimum variance fusion rule, while at the same time is less conservative than one obtained by the widely used covariance intersection method. From the geometrical viewpoint, the upper bound filter results in the inscribed largest volume ellipsoid...

Motion estimation of uncooperative space objects: A case of multi-platform fusion

    , Article Advances in Space Research ; Volume 62, Issue 9 , 2018 , Pages 2665-2678 ; 02731177 (ISSN) Zarei Jalalabadi, M ; Malaek, S. M. B ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2018
    Abstract
This work describes an efficient technique to sequentially combine estimates resulting from individual sets of measurements provided by a network of satellites. The prescribed method is especially effective to estimate motion states of an uncooperative space object using range image data. The technique, which is fast and suitable for on-line applications, could also be effective to capture stray objects or those satellites that require periodic servicing. Such missions call for high degree of precision and reliable estimation methods. In fact, the proposed estimation architecture consists of a network of synchronized platforms, i.e., Observer Satellites (OS), each with processing power and...

Exact solution of generalized cooperative susceptible-infected-removed (SIR) dynamics

    , Article Physical Review E ; Volume 100, Issue 1 , 2019 ; 24700045 (ISSN) Zarei, F ; Moghimi Araghi, S ; Ghanbarnejad, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    American Physical Society  2019
    Abstract
In this paper, we introduce a general framework for coinfection as cooperative susceptible-infected-removed (SIR) dynamics. We first solve the SIR model analytically for two symmetric cooperative contagions [L. Chen, Europhys. Lett. 104, 50001 (2013)10.1209/0295-5075/104/50001] and then generalize and solve the model exactly in the symmetric scenarios for three and more cooperative contagions. We calculate the transition points and order parameters, i.e., the total number of infected hosts. We show that the behavior of the system does not change qualitatively with the inclusion of more diseases. We also show analytically that there is a saddle-node-like bifurcation for two cooperative SIR...

Fault detection and protection strategy for islanded inverter-based microgrids

Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc  2019
    Abstract
This paper proposes a fault detection and protection strategy for islanded inverter-based microgrids (IBMGs). Reliable and accurate protection is one of the main challenges in the proliferation of modern microgrids (MGs). Considering the limited fault current of the voltage-frequency controlled inverter-based distributed energy resources (VF-IBDERs), the protection is more challenging in islanded IBMGs. In this regard, the control scheme of VF-IBDER with a current limiting strategy plays an important role. Due to the limited fault currents close to the converter nominal current, the conventional fault detection methods do not work properly. In addition, bi-directional fault currents worsen...

What drives mergers and acquisitions waves in developing countries? Evidences from Iranian banking industry

    , Article Iranian Economic Review ; Volume 19, Issue 2 , 2015 , Pages 123-137 ; 10266542 (ISSN) Zarei, M ; Alambeigi, A ; Karimi, P ; Zarei, B ; Sharif University of Technology
    2015
    Abstract
Many Middle-East countries, like Iran, have dynamic banking industries and have observed merger and acquisitions (M&A) waves. M&A waves are usually defined in the developed world context and some of their main drivers were identified as: market timing, environment's shocks, merger manias, government regulation and regulatory, and technological changes. It has been discussed that merger waves and their reasons are among the ten most important unsolved mysteries in the field of finance (Brealey and Myers, 1991, p. 923), and as a result of this, it was not possible to completely clarify the reasons behind emerging M&A waves, especially in developing countries; for this reason in these...

    Abstract
This chapter aims at pointing out that how mergers and acquisitions (M&As) as popular strategies which they are based on external growth approach have affected the performance of banks and entrepreneurial orientation (EO) in the context of Iranian financial sector. In this regard, it has been tried to investigate in what way EO moderates the relationships between the performance of banks in one hand, and M&As on the other hand. For this goal, 114 participants including the top and middle managers of the Iranian banks were chosen to be closely considered. The research is an applied research and a cross-correlation methodology has been used to spotlight on the probable relationships between EO...

The combination of KMnO4 oxidation and polymeric flocculation for the mitigation of membrane fouling in a membrane bioreactor

    , Article Separation and Purification Technology ; Volume 159 , 2016 , Pages 124-134 ; 13835866 (ISSN) Zarei baygi, A ; Moslemi, M ; Mirzaei, S. H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier  2016
    Abstract
KMnO4 oxidation combined with polyelectrolyte (K530CF) flocculation was investigated to mitigate membrane fouling in a membrane bioreactor. The optimum dosages of chemical additives in order to enhance the removal of soluble microbial products (SMPs) were determined. This method was able to reduce the concentration of COD in the effluent to 57.1% and 51.1% lower than those in the experiments in the absence of chemical flocculants and in the presence of polyelectrolyte, respectively. NH3-N removal was improved by combining KMnO4 and K530CF. When KMnO4 was used along with polyelectrolyte, the zeta potential was neutralized to a greater extent which resulted in an improvement in the...

    Abstract
Due to the technical advances in power electronic industry, employing inverter-based distributed energy resources (IBDERs) are increased in electric power systems. Distributed generators (DGs) with the rating capacity of few megawatts are commonly connected to the distribution level of power systems which are inherently unbalanced. A cluster of IBDERs and loads form a small-scale grid called microgrid (MG) which can operate independent of the main grid. In a MG, grid forming voltage source converters (VSCs) are used to control the voltages and frequency of the MG. However, grid forming VSCs with conventional control schemes cannot do this task properly when the MG is unbalanced. In this...

    Abstract
The geometry structures of hexa-coordinated [NiLX]X complexes (X = Cl -, Br-, I-) {L = 8,9,18,19-tetrahydro-7H,17H- dibenzo[f,o] [1,5,9,13]dioxadiaza cyclohexadecine-8,18-diol} are optimized by density functional theory (DFT) using B3LYP/LANL2DZ. The calculated geometric parameters are in good agreement with the corresponding experimental values. Calculation results about these complexes show that dipole moment decreases, and the energy levels of HOMOs descend from iodo-complex to chloro-complex. The energy levels of HOMOs descend gently from iodo-complex to chloro-complex, while the energy levels of LUMOs in the present complexes are almost similar; therefore the energy gapes between HOMOs...

Reinforcing fault ride through capability of grid forming voltage source converters using an enhanced voltage control scheme

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery ; Volume 34, Issue 5 , 2019 , Pages 1827-1842 ; 08858977 (ISSN) Zarei, S. F ; Mokhtari, H ; Ghasemi, M. A ; Blaabjerg, F ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Medium power distributed energy resources (DERs) are commonly connected to medium voltage distribution systems via voltage source converters (VSCs). Several guidelines and standards have been developed to establish the needed criteria and requirements for DERs interconnections. In this respect, it is preferred to reinforce the VSC fault ride through (FRT) capability, which considerably minimizes the DG outage period and reconnection time and results in a resilient system against short circuits. Considering the significant number of asymmetrical faults in distribution systems, the VSC response in such conditions must be investigated, and consequently, its FRT capability must be reinforced. In...

A multifaceted quantitative index for sustainability assessment of groundwater management: application for aquifers around Iran

    , Article Water International ; Volume 47, Issue 3 , 2022 , Pages 338-360 ; 02508060 (ISSN) Zarei, B ; Parizi, E ; Hosseini, S. M ; Ataie Ashtiani, B ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
This study developed a groundwater sustainable management index including components of environmental, social, economic and institutional responsibility. Four significant indicators: integrated groundwater footprint, population density, percentage of groundwater used for agricultural and industrial sectors, and density of observation wells were adopted and executed for 443 of Iran’s aquifers. The results indicated that the groundwater sustainable management for 32% of Iran’s aquifers is poor–very poor, and this index is more sensitive to economic and social indicators. Finally, an inverse correlation was observed between the groundwater sustainable management index values and the coefficient...

Improving physio-mechanical and biological properties of 3D-printed PLA scaffolds via in-situ argon cold plasma treatment

    , Article Scientific Reports ; Volume 13, Issue 1 , 2023 ; 20452322 (ISSN) Zarei, M ; Sayedain, S ; Askarinya, A ; Sabbaghi, M ; Alizadeh, R ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
As a bone tissue engineering material, polylactic acid (PLA) has received significant attention and interest due to its ease of processing and biocompatibility. However, its insufficient mechanical properties and poor wettability are two major drawbacks that limit its extensive use. For this purpose, the present study uses in-situ cold argon plasma treatment coupled with a fused deposition modeling printer to enhance the physio-mechanical and biological behavior of 3D-printed PLA scaffolds. Following plasma treatment, field emission scanning electron microscopy images indicated that the surface of the modified scaffold became rough, and the interlayer bonding was enhanced. This resulted in...

Characterization of proportional-integral-resonant compensator for DC link voltage control

    , Article 2018 IEEE 19th Workshop on Control and Modeling for Power Electronics, COMPEL 2018, 25 June 2018 through 28 June 2018 ; 2018 ; 9781538655412 (ISBN) Zarei, S. F ; Ghasemi, M. A ; Peyghami, S ; Davari, P ; Mokhtari, H ; Blaabjerg, F ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Voltage unbalance and short circuits in distribution networks adversely affect the performance of grid-tied voltage source inverters (VSIs). Consequently, the dc-link voltage ripple may significantly increase leading to operation of VSI in an unsatisfactory manner. Conventionally in order to maintain the negative sequence current under unbalanced conditions, low-pass/trap filter in the current control loop are required which significantly reduce the controller bandwidth. In order to minimize the dc-link voltage ripple without impairing the controller bandwidth, this paper investigates the design and performance of Proportional-Integral-Resonant (PIR) controller in improving the performance...

DC-link loop bandwidth selection strategy for grid-connected inverters considering power quality requirements

    , Article International Journal of Electrical Power and Energy Systems ; Volume 119 , 2020 Zarei, S. F ; Mokhtari, H ; Ghasemi, M. A ; Peyghami, S ; Davari, P ; Blaabjerg, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2020
    Abstract
DC-link voltage and output current control loops are two cascaded loops in the control structure of grid-connected inverters. A high DC-link voltage loop bandwidth (DCL-BW) provides more disturbance rejection capability for the control loop and is preferred from control system perspective. However, for stability issues, this BW is limited and must be sufficiently less than that of the current control loop. Among the different control schemes, instantaneous active reactive control (IARC) method provides the highest possible DCL-BW (i.e., 0.02 × switching frequency). Having this degree of freedom in the controller design, a proper methodology should be defined for selection of DCL-BW. In this...

Control of grid-following inverters under unbalanced grid conditions

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Energy Conversion ; Volume 35, Issue 1 , 2020 , Pages 184-192 Zarei, S. F ; Mokhtari, H ; Ghasemi, M. A ; Peyghami, S ; Davari, P ; Blaabjerg, F ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
This paper proposes a new control scheme to eliminate the 3rd harmonic in the output currents of grid-following inverters under unbalanced grid conditions. Unbalanced grids adversely affect the performance of grid-following inverters due to the oscillations appearing on the DC-link voltage with a frequency twice the line frequency. The paper is based on instantaneous active reactive control (IARC) technique due to its advantages over other existing methods. However, the presence of severe asymmetrical 3rd harmonic distortions in the inverter output currents is the main challenge with IARC method, which impairs the power quality requirements. This paper enhances the IARC scheme by proposing a...

A simple, faster method for kinetic proximity problems

    , Article Computational Geometry: Theory and Applications ; Volume 48, Issue 4 , 2015 , Pages 342-359 ; 09257721 (ISSN) Rahmati, Z ; Abam, M. A ; King, V ; Whitesides, S ; Zarei, A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
For a set of n points in the plane, this paper presents simple kinetic data structures (KDSs) for solutions to some fundamental proximity problems, namely, the all nearest neighbors problem, the closest pair problem, and the Euclidean minimum spanning tree (EMST) problem. Also, the paper introduces KDSs for maintenance of two well-studied sparse proximity graphs, the Yao graph and the Semi-Yao graph. We use sparse graph representations, the Pie Delaunay graph and the Equilateral Delaunay graph, to provide new solutions for the proximity problems. Then we design KDSs that efficiently maintain these sparse graphs on a set of n moving points, where the trajectory of each point is assumed to be...

    Abstract
P-V characteristic of photovoltaic (PV) arrays under partially shaded conditions (PSC) has multiple peaks, and conventional maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithms may fail to track the global maximum power point (GMPP) because of their insufficient intelligence in discriminating the local and global peaks. This paper proposes a novel fast MPPT method to achieve GMPP of PV array under all PSCs. The proposed method reduces the number of required samples and increases the speed of GMPP tracking based on comprehensive study of I-V and P-V characteristics of PV array. Performance of the proposed method has been evaluated in simulations of different PSCs. Also, its performance has been...

    Abstract
Polylactic acid (PLA) scaffolds produced by the fused deposition modeling (FDM) method have biocompatibility, close Young's modulus to that of bone, and the ability to make complex shapes. However, PLA has some drawbacks like brittleness, inappropriate mechanical strength and hydrophobicity, and a low degradation rate. In this study, polyethylene glycol (PEG) (5 and 10 wt%) by solving method and titanium (Ti) particles (5 wt%) by two different methods were mixed with PLA to address the mentioned problems. Extruded filaments were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and fourier transform infrared (FTIR). Surface morphology of the produced filaments...

Experimental investigation into the behaviour of a new replaceable bracing system

    Abstract
A new bracing system with new features somewhat different from those of the existing ones was devised and is presented. These features comprise some of the advantages of eccentric bracing systems including their ability to dissipate energy through bending of flexural elements while lacking some of the disadvantages of such systems including their inability of being replaced upon damage during events such as earthquakes, etc. While in traditional types of braces, including both concentric and eccentric ones, braces are under axial loading, in this new system they work in a bending capacity. As a result, the sort of flexibility which is introduced in the system in the presence of eccentric...
