    Abstract
Near field scanning optical microscopy exploiting differential interference contrast enhancement is demonstrated. Beam splitting in the near field region is implemented using a dual color probe based on plasmonic color sorter idea. This provides the ability to illuminate two neighboring points on the sample simultaneously. It is shown that by modulating the two wavelengths employed in exciting such a probe, phase difference information can be retrieved through measuring the near field photoinduced force at the difference of the two modulation frequencies. This difference in frequency is engineered to correspond to the first resonant frequency of the cantilever, resulting in improved SNR, and...

Finite Element Modeling of Particle Distribution in Al/Powder Composite Sheets Processed by ARB for Manufacturing Aluminium Foams

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Zarif Ahangaran, Saman (Author) ; Akbarzade, Abbas (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this study closed cell aluminum foam was manufactured through accumulative roll bonding (ARB). In this method, aluminum AA1050 strip was used as the matrix and calcium carbonate was selected as blowing agent powder. The strips were roll-bonded with reduction of 50% during each pass. The produced composite was then subjected to different foaming conditions in order to achieve foams with maximum porosity. Subsequently, influences of content of the blowing agent, time, pressure, number of rolling passes and heating rate on the percentage of porosities were evaluated. In optimum condition quantity of the blowing agent, foaming temperature, holding time and number of ARB passes were equal to 1...

Analysis and Improvement of Transients and Stability of Electric Shipboards Against Load Disturbances

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Zarif Mansour, Milad (Author) ; Parniani, Mostafa (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Nowadays, According to the improvement of technology, especially in power electronics, electric shipboards are preferred over traditional ones. Better maneuverability, lower emission, higher efficiency and reliability are the most conspicuous merits of this type of ships. Notwithstanding the fact that electric shipboards have many advantages, some serious problems may arise in these ships. Since the thruster motors of these ships are usually induction motors and they are fed by the microgrid of the ship, and taking into ACcount that thruster motors consume a huge amount of the generated power by the synchronous generators, the concept of infinite bus is inexistent in these microgrids. Hence,...

    Abstract
Temporal coupled mode theory (CMT) has so far been applied phenomenologically in the analysis of optical cavity-waveguide structures, and relies on a priori knowledge of the to-be-excited resonator mode. Thus a rigorous derivation from Maxwell's equations, and without any prior knowledge of the resonator type is needed. In this paper we derive temporal CMT of optical cavities coupled to waveguides. Starting from Maxwell's equations and considering a proper expansion of the modes of the waveguide and resonator, and using mode orthogonality, the temporal CMT for this structure is obtained. We show that this formulation is general and can be applied to both traveling wave and standing wave type...

On the stability issues for fuzzy large-scale systems

    , Article Fuzzy Sets and Systems ; Volume 174, Issue 1 , July , 2011 , Pages 31-49 ; 01650114 (ISSN) Zamani, I ; Sadati, N ; Zarif, M. H ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The main objective of this paper is to investigate the stability and stabilization problem of fuzzy large-scale systems in which the system is composed of a number of Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy subsystems with interconnection. Instead of fuzzy parallel distributed compensation (PDC) design, nonlinear state feedback controllers are used in stabilization of the overall large-scale system. Based on Lyapunov stability theory, linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) conditions are derived for asymptotic and exponential stability. Two numerical examples are given to confirm the analytical results and illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed strategy

Numerical Modeling of Piles under Seismic Excitation

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Nikougoftar Zarif, Vahid (Author) ; Ahmadi, Mohammad Mehdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In safe and economic designing of deep foundations for any structure, there are several factors affecting the behavior and response of a pile under seismic loads. These factors can be divided into three main categories: geometrical factors (e.g. Dimensions of the pile, soil, and mesh scheme), material properties (e.g. shear modulus, bulk modulus, soil elasticity, soil density, and shear strength) and earthquake load characteristics (e.g. frequency range, PGA, duration of excitation(. Studying the effects and importance of these factors in the final response of the pile (i.e. ultimate forces and displacements ) can help the design engineers of these foundations to optimize their designs....

The Impact of Non-reciprocal One-way Propagation on the Coupling between Electromagnetic Resonators and Waveguides

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Zarif, Arezoo (Author) ; Mehrany, Khashayar (Supervisor) ; Rajaei, Behzad (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
Subwavelength localization of electromagnetic energy with intense local fields, also known as electromagnetic hotspots, has received significant attention over the past few decades. In most cases the hotspot is achieved through the resonant concentration of electromagnetic fields. One way recently considered to get hotspot is through reflection of electromagnetic waves in nonreciprocal one-way structures, in plasmonics and via magneto optic effect. However these hotspots are less confined compared to hotspots caused by resonances. So combining nonreciprocal structures with resonance can provide better hotspots. Our aim in this thesis is to study nonreciprocal resonant structures using coupled...

Optical isolation enabled by two time-modulated point perturbations in a ring resonator

    Abstract
In this paper we achieve non-reciprocity in a silicon optical ring resonator, by introducing two small time-modulated perturbations into the ring. Isolators are designed using this time-perturbed ring, side-coupled to waveguides. The underlying operation of the time-modulated ring and isolator is analyzed using Temporal Coupled Mode Theory (TCMT). The TCMT is used to find the angular distance, phase difference and thickness of the two time-modulated points on the ring resonator and also to find and justify the optimum values for the modulation frequency and amplitude, which yields maximum isolation in the isolator arrangements. Insight into the major players that determine isolation are also...

    Abstract
In this paper, we present the design guidelines for a tunable optical isolator in an SOI-based ring resonator with two small time-modulated regions. By considering a physical model, the proper geometrical and modulation parameters are designed, based on a standard CMOS foundry process. The effect of the variation of the key parameters on the performance of the isolator is explained by two counter-acting mechanisms, namely the separation between the resonance frequencies of counter-rotating modes and energy transfer to the side harmonic. We show that there is a trade-off between these parameters to obtain maximum isolation. Consequently, by applying the quadrature phase difference one can...

Analysis of Market Structure in IRAN’s Banking Industry

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Zarif Honarvar, Ali (Author) ; Fatemi, Farshad (Supervisor) ; Nili, Farhad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
This study aimed at using industrial organization approach for banks and the use of models of determining the market structure and the level of competition in Iran’s banking industry. Models of market structure determination are divided into two categories: structural models that are the same as calculation of concentration indices using market share and non-structural models that are the same as revenue-cost nature of economic enterprises. Structural models have been established based on two theories of structure-conduct-performance (SCP) and efficient structure (ES). The difference between these two perspectives depends on the good or bad nature of concentration in banking services market....

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Salari, Mohammad Sadegh (Author) ; Boroushaki, Mehrdad (Supervisor) ; Rajabi Qahnuyeh, Abbas (Co-Advisor) ; Zarif Boushehri, Behzad (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
Aerodynamical design of backward swept for a horizontal axis wind turbine blade has been carried out to produce more power. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) calculations were used for solving the conservation equations in one outer stationary reference frame and one inner rotating reference frame, where the blades and grids were fixed in reference to the rotating frame. The Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) solver was validated in a test case, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) VI blades. Simulation results show considerable agreement with the measurements. Three different turbulence models have been compared: Spalart-Allmaras, the Standard K-ε, and Shear Stress Transport...

    Abstract
A novel intelligent semi-active control system for an eleven degrees of freedom passenger car's suspension system using magnetorheological (MR) damper with neuro-fuzzy (NF) control strategy to enhance desired suspension performance is proposed. In comparison with earlier studies, an improvement in problem modeling is made. The proposed method consists of two parts: a fuzzy control strategy to establish an efficient controller to improve ride comfort and road handling (RCH) and an inverse mapping model to estimate the force needed for a semi-active damper. The fuzzy logic rules are extracted based on Sugeno inference engine. The inverse mapping model is based on an artificial neural network...

Performance and exhaust emission characteristics of a spark ignition engine operated with gasoline and CNG blend

    , Article Proceedings of the Spring Technical Conference of the ASME Internal Combustion Engine Division ; 2012 , Pages 179-187 ; 15296598 (ISSN) ; 9780791844663 (ISBN) Dashti, M ; Hamidi, A. A ; Mozafari, A. A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
Using CNG as an additive for gasoline is a proper choice due to higher octane number of CNG enriched gasoline with respect to that of gasoline. As a result, it is possible to use gasoline with lower octane number in the engine. This would also mean the increase of compression ratio in SI engines resulting in higher performance and lower gasoline consumption. Over the years, the use of simulation codes to model the thermodynamic cycle of an internal combustion engine have developed tools for more efficient engine designs and fuel combustion. In this study, a thermodynamic cycle simulation of a conventional four-stroke spark-ignition engine has been developed. The model is used to study the...

    Abstract
With the declining energy resources and increase of pollutant emissions, a great deal of efforts has been focused on the development of alternatives for fossil fuels. One of the promising alternative fuels to gasoline in the internal combustion engine is natural gas [1-5]. The application of natural gas in current internal combustion engines is realistic due to its many benefits. The higher thermal efficiency due to the higher octane value and lower exhaust emissions including CO2 as a result of the lower carbon to hydrogen ratio of the fuel are the two important feature of using CNG as an alternative fuel. It is well known that computer simulation codes are valuable economically as a cost...

    Abstract
Gaining insight into possible vibratory responses of dynamical systems around their stable equilibria is an essential step, which must be taken before their design and application. The results of such a study can significantly help prevent instability in closed-loop stabilized systems by avoiding the excitation of the system in the neighborhood of its resonance. This paper investigates nonlinear oscillations of a rotary inverted pendulum (RIP) with a full-state feedback controller. Lagrange’s equations are employed to derive an accurate 2-DoF mathematical model, whose parameter values are extracted by both the measurement and 3D modeling of the real system components. Although the governing...

    Abstract
A suction-controlled ring device has been developed to continuously measure the coefficient of lateral soil pressure in deformable unsaturated soil samples from the at-rest to the active condition under application of increasing vertical pressure and controlled matric suction. The device incorporates a thin aluminum specimen ring equipped with horizontal strain gages for recording the lateral soil strains. In addition, a sensor recording water volume changes is utilized to continuously monitor the degree of saturation of the soil sample during tests. The matric suction within the soil texture is controlled using the axis translation technique. In order to verify the performance of the ring...

    , Article Iranian Journal of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering ; Volume 24, Issue 4 , 2005 , Pages 1-7 ; 10219986 (ISSN) Otady, M ; Vaziri, A ; Seifkordi, A. A ; Kheirolomoom, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2005
    Abstract
We introduce a new smooth, non-toxic, biocompatible method for cross-linking of gum tragacanth (GT), a polysaccharide of natural origin, in order to serve as a new supporting matrix for immobilization systems. The modified gum is used as a matrix for the catalysis of the conversion of benzyl penicillin to 6-aminopenicillanic acid (6-APA) by means of Escherichia coli ATCC11105 with penicillin G acylase (PGA) activity. The results show that GT beads can not only serve as a proper matrix for immobilization, but show enhanced hydrolysis rate and stability compared to other immobilization systems used for this reaction. This signifies the potential of GT as a biocompatible matrix for...

    Abstract
The Class-E power amplifier has been widely studied and formulated in the literature. Although the majority of reported inductive coupling wireless power transfer (WPT) systems use a class-E power amplifier for driving the primary coil, still there is a lack of a comprehensive study on class-E circuit dedicated to WPT, providing a set of closed form design equations for proper class-E operation. This paper presents the required design equations needed to design a 'true' class-E circuit for WPT applications. Equations for the series-tuned secondary coil WPT system are presented, as well as two different design procedures for the parallel-tuned secondary coil. The derived equations have been...
