Experimental Study of Transition on an airfoil in Plunging Motion

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Rasi Marzabadi, Faezeh (Author) ; Soltani, Mohammad Reza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Prediction of the location of transition point is important for wind turbine applications. The laminar/turbulent properties of the flow field have an important influence on the skin friction and separation location that affect both lift and drag characteristics of the blade significantly. In this study, a series of experiments were conducted on a section of a 660 kW wind turbine blade in subsonic flow. Boundary layer transition point was measured using multiple hot-film sensors. Hot-film data were analyzed in both time and frequency domains. The experiments involved static and dynamic tests where the airfoil motion was of plunging type oscillation. The effects of several parameters such as...

    Aeroacoustic Simulation of Rod-Airfoil Noise

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Yazdani, Mostafa (Author) ; Farshchi, Mohammad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Wall systems are an essential part of the buildings and their capacity should be properly considered in their design. However, the seismic behavior of building systems with in-filled walls and their interaction is a very complex issue, yet to be understood. Using the in-filled walls in the buildings without including them in the design process changes the whole behavior of the structural system as well as their failure mechanism under earthquake excitations. On the other hand, there have been extensive researches on rehabilitation of the structures with in-filled walls or designing them as the main or one of the lateral load carrying systems against seismic input. In this research, first the...

Experimental Investigation of Acoustic Excitation on NACA 0012 Airfoil Wake Development

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Hasani, Maedeh (Author) ; Soltani, Mohammad Reza (Supervisor) ; Masdari, Mehran (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Acoustic excitation frequency effect on NACA 0012 airfoil boundary layer and on its wake development was investigated experimentally in two wind tunnels. Airfoils chord lentgh were 100 and 152 mm. Flow Reynolds numbers was 60000 and 160000 in the first wind tunnel and 100000 and 250000 in the second one. Excitation frequency range was chosen between 300 and 2400 Hz. Airfoil flow and sound characteristics was measured using a 1-D hot-wire sensor and two microphones, one mounted on the wind tunnel wall and the other flash mounted on the model at 10 percent of chord length, respectively. Airfoil angle of attack was set at zero degree in the first wind tunnel and at three angles of zero, five...

Numerical Simulation of Dynamic Stall of Consecutive Wind Turbine Blades' Airfoil

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Shojaa, Mohammad Ali (Author) ; Taeibi-Rahni, Mohammad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Today energy sources, in any kind, have their special situation in human’s life and we must use our knowledge to manage them for effective usage by decreasing losses and finding modern renewable sources. One of the best way to achieve this purpose is increasing efficiency and improve energy generator performances under different environmental conditions. In spite of the fact that wind turbines stall dynamics behavior is under investigation for 6 years, study of dynamic stall phenomenon especially over series blades still needed. By addition to this phenomenon, improper wind turbine arrange decreases efficiency too. As a matter of fact, scrutiny of dynamics stall of wind turbines serial...

The Study of Megawatt Wind Turbine Rotor Performance in Presence of Contamination Using CFD

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mohajer, Abbas (Author) ; Darbandi, Masoud (Supervisor) ; Taiebi Rahni, Mohammad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Considering the negative effects of contamination on wind turbine blade performance, we investigate aerodynamics performance of a one- Megawatt wind turbine. To achieve this, we compare the performance and power of the wind turbine with and without contaminations. To calculate the wind turbine output power, we use a developed wind turbine calculator, which benefits from the Blade Element Momentum (BEM) theory. Furthermore, the aerodynamics calculations are performed using of a commercial software for clean and rough airfoils. Considering the change of Reynolds number along the blade axis, the airfoil characteristics are calculated for two Reynolds numbers of 0.5 and 3.5 millions to increase...

Aerodynamic Analysis and Design of a Propeller for Light Flying Objects

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Sardari, Ali (Author) ; Farhanieh, Bijan (Supervisor)
    Abstract
One of the major concerns in the use of light flying objects is propulsion for cruise and take off from land. Creating propulsion force is important in such way that no excessive weight is introduced, especially in case of UAVs. A common trend for propulsion in light flying objects is using propellers. Propellers are commonly driven by an external motive force and due to this force and their geometry, they convert energy from this motive force into the momentum of fluid in which they are immersed as a result a lift force is generated. In the present work, trend of propeller design with optimum performance is introduced with use of vortex theory, optimum energy loss condition or Betz condition...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Khorshidian, Nima (Author) ; Soltani, Mohammad Reza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In recent years, renewable energy equipments such as wind turbines has become more common for electric power generation. Due to the complexity of the aerodynamics of wind turbines, experimental studies in this field are very important. The purpose of this study is to investigate the aerodynamic performance of a new wind turbine airfoil in static mode and pitching motion. The airfoil is a section of 2 MW wind turbine blade, pitching around its quarter-chord axis .All experiments are carried out in a subsonic wind tunnel. In these experiments, the reynolds number is 140,000 and the reduced frequency varies from 0.034 to 0.126. Pressure transducers have been used to determine the pressure...

Aerodynamic Design and Numerical Simulation of Morphing Flap for a Slotted Airfoil

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Shahrokhi, Siavash (Author) ; Taeibi Rahni, Mohamad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The purpose of this study is design and simulation of morphing flap for a slotted airfoil to reduce drag and increase lift. Increasing lift results in a smaller flap for the same lift, resulting in less weight and less drag. Drag reduction due to morphing nature causes growth in aerodynamic efficiency. In this work, a flap designed for 0.2 and 4,700,000 Mach and Reynold numbers, respectively. Our simulation was performed using ANSYS FLUENT flow solver and POINTWISE for grid generation. Here, morphing has been applied by changing the flap mean camber line and slots, so that they have minimum interferences with the flow. For this purpose, the flap mean camber line was discretized and various...

Frequency Analysis of the Wake of an Oscillating Airfoil

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Shariloo, Koosha (Author) ; Ebrahimi, Abbas (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Understanding the physics of unsteady flow is very important due to various applications. Axial compressors, turbines, helicopter blades, and energy harvesters are the essential applications of this problem. An airfoil under pitching oscillation is one of the common cases in unsteady aerodynamics, and several characteristics of the flow around it have been investigated up to now. The frequency analysis of the wake flow for pitching airfoils has received less attention. In this research, experimental tests have been carried out for symmetric airfoil NACA 0012 under pitching oscillation in low Reynolds flow (6×104) and before the airfoil stall condition. The experiments were carried out in the...
