, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Esfahani, Hamid (Author) ; Nemati, Ali (Supervisor) ; Salahi, Esmaeil (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
Zirconia toughened alumina (ZTA) Nanocomposites were prepared using nano sized Zirconia (ZrO2) powders doped with 3% mol of yttria (Y2O3) nanopowders and the sintering behavior at different temperature (1450 °C, 1550 °C and 1650 °C) were studied. The ZTA composite with different amount of partially stabilized Zirconia (PSZ)(5, 10, 15 and 20% mol) were prepared via axial pressing and then sintered to achieve maximum densification. After that phase changes of the samples were monitored. SEM was used for microstructural study and hardness and fracture toughness were determined by means of Vickers indentation. X-ray diffraction pattern showed that at constant composition, tetragonal zirconia...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Niknaddaf, Saeid (Author) ; Khorasheh, Farhad (Supervisor) ; Nazeran, Iraj (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
The study on the propane dehydrogenation process has been receiving significant attention due to the growing demand for propylene. Many efforts have been made to enhance the propylene yield by developing new catalysts with high-activity, high-stability and high-selectivity. Among these, platinum supported catalysts have been reported widely. Firstly, the current study mentions related work in the modeling of coke formation and deactivation of catalyst, experimental setup and catalysts which are conventionally used for propane dehydrogenation reaction. Then, a monolayer–multilayer mechanism is proposed for modelling the coke formation. In addition, the reaction rate of coke formation and its...

Preparation of Claus Nanocatalyst for Replacing the Commercial Catalyst

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Rezaee, Mohammad (Author) ; Kazemini, Mohammad (Supervisor) ; Rashidi, Ali Morad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Selective oxidation of H2S to elemental sulfur in a fixed bed reactor over seven nanocatalysts has been investigated and compared to commercial claus catalyst. Among them, Al2O3-supported sodium oxide nanocatalyst prepared with wet chemical technique and Al2O3 nanocatalyst prepared with spray pyrolysis method were the most active catalysts for selective oxidation of H2S to elemental sulfur. The remaining nanocatalysts were deactivated, mainly due to the interaction with H2S and conversion into sulfides. For synthesis of Al2O3 with spray pyrolysis method we use statistical design of experiments (box-behnken design) in order to screen the effects of significant synthesizing parameters

Phase composition, thermal behavior and morphological analyses were performed using X-ray diffraction (XRD), simultaneous thermogravimetry and differential thermal analysis (STA), and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), respectively. With the increase in temperature and the Alumina content, severe...

Investigation on Mechanical Properties of Alumina Spinel Zirconia Nanocomposites Fabricated Through Gelcasting Process

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Khoshkalam, Mohamad (Author) ; Faghihi Sani, Mohammad Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Zirconia Toughened Alumina (ZTA) is a well-known ceramic matrix composite due to its high fracture toughness and good mechanical properties. Addition of spinel (MgAl2O4) to ZTA inhibits alumina grain growth and produces phase boundaries with low strength. This phenomenon leads to formation of a ceramic matrix composite with special mechanical properties such as high temperature super plastic deformation. However, the room temperature mechanical properties of alumina-spinel-zirconia (AMZ) composite such as fracture toughness were rarely investigated by researchers. In this research the AMZ nanocomposite powders were synthesized via solution combustion method. The dense AMZ composite samples...

Fluoride Removal from Radioactive Wastewater of UCF Plant by Adsorption

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Rezaei Hajideh, Maryam (Author) ; Samadfam, Mohammad (Supervisor) ; Sepehrian, Hamid (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this research, a review on fluoride adsorption revealed that the modification of the adsorber surface with ions like Ca2+ results in great enhancement of the fluoride adsorption. It seems that the enhancement in fluoride adsorption by the modified adsorber, is mainly due to the selective chemical binding of the fluoride ion with the surface-bound ion (Ca2+), regardless of the base material itself. In order to confirm this hypothesis, two different adsorber materials namely, γ-alumina (a material, conventionally used for fluoride removal from water and wastewater) and Micro-silica (a mineral with small adsorption capacity for fluoride) were selected for further study. It was found that the...
