Analysis, Design and Manufacturing of Custom Osteotomy Implants Forming Machine

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Gomari, Behnam (Author) ; Farahmand, Farzam (Supervisor) ; Farkhondeh, Hassan (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Knee arthritis is a painful disease from which millions of people around the world are suffering. One of the main causes of osteoarthritis and joint damage that starts from a young age, is that bones around the knee are not in a straight line. As a result, this situation causes additional pressure to the knee. This should be corrected with surgery. There are two procedures for this operation, a conventional method and a customized method. In conventional method, surgical planning is based on 2d X-ray images and plates are formed and fixed approximately at the desired location. This method is not precise enough and may cause problems for the patient. A new developing method, is that all the...

Intra-Articular Drug Delivery System for the Treatment of Inflammatory Arthritis

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Shiri Varnamkhasti, Atefeh (Author) ; Abdekhodaie, Mohammad Jafar (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The objective of this research is to design a drug delivery system that allows anti-inflammatory drugs to be injected directly into the joint (intra-articular injection) for the treatment of arthritis so that reduce the side effects associated with oral consumption of these drugs, increase the duration of drug retention in the joint environment, and reduce the side effects caused by repeated injections while improving effectiveness. To achieve this, first, desirable features were determined by considering the anatomy of the joint environment, the biological changes caused by the disease, and reviewing published articles and commercial products in the field; appropriate drug and raw materials...

Impact of the Shape of the Loaded Particles on the Mechanical Properties of the Scaffolds and their Interaction with Macrophages

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Tymuri, Fatemeh (Author) ; Mashayekhan, Shohreh (Supervisor) ; Safari, Hanieh (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Osteoarthritis is a common musculoskeletal disorder and the most prevalent form of arthritis. To date, no comprehensive cure has been reported for osteoarthritis, and its clinical management remains challenging. The primary therapeutic goals in the early stages of osteoarthritis are to increase joint mobility and control disease progression by continuously releasing drugs and molecules modulating inflammatory responses and reducing pain. Smart drug delivery platforms are one of the strategies to overcome the challenges of injectable and oral medications. Additionally, drug carrier particles can have different therapeutic targets based on their size and shape. Different therapeutic...

Design of a Double-Network Hydrogel Scaffold for Cartilage Tissue Engineering

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ganjali, Amir Reza (Author) ; Abdekhodaei, Mohammad Jafar (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Osteoarthritis has always been one of the most common diseases in middle age because it causes severe pain and inflammation in the joints of the body. Cartilage tissue does not have the ability to repair itself. For this reason, fabricating and designing the most efficient, least-expensive, and most convenient methods for the treatment of cartilage defects is always an important issue. Today, there are surgical and injectable methods to relieve pain and initiate the body's natural healing response. But due to the many disadvantages and limitations of these methods, tissue engineering science has turned to modifying these methods or providing new methods. One of these methods is the use of...
