The Study of Flow in Respiratory System with Fluid Structure Interaction Approach
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Saeeidi, Mohammad Saeeid (Supervisor)
Abstract
In respiratory system of live bodies, different mechanical phenomena such as air suction, diffusion and deposition of particles and transport of species between air and blood take place. Furthermore, the geometry of lung is a complex and multi scale geometry. In order to reduce these complexities, the acinus behavior is transformed to numerical functions which can be used as boundary conditions for simulating upper generations of the lung. Hence, in current study, the air flow suction of the lung is described as a function of the mechanical properties of the lung tissue. This task is fulfilled by modeling the flow for different Elastic moduli and taking fluid structure interaction into...
Application of Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) Spectroscopy of Biofluids in Disease Diagnosis
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Nejat, Hossein (Supervisor) ; Meghdari, Ali (Supervisor) ; Beigzadeh, Borhan (Co-Advisor)
Abstract
The ability to diagnose a disease rapidly, non-invasively, with high confidence level and low cost can be of great importance in many ways such as 'detection and on-time conduction of remedial strategies. Hence It can reduce fatality rate and costs in the hygiene field. Currently some pathological diagnosis methods are not suitable considering their precision and costs and in addition to that, most of them are single-function and are developed for diagnosis of a particular disease and don't perform well in the case of multiple disease factors. Many diseases are caused by metabolic disorders and thus direct study of metabolic factors can provide us with a lot of evidence on the disease. One...
Study of Viscoelastic Property of Fluid with Optical Tweezers
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Seyed Reihani, Nader (Supervisor)
Abstract
Viscoelastic properties of biological fluid play an important role on biological organs. As an example we all know that Red blood cells must have high flexibility to pass thorough thin capillary. This high flexibility come partially from cytoplasm and 2 dimensional membrane and partially from polymeric fluid inside the cell(hemoglobin). So, for recognizing mechanical properties of a whole cell we also need to study the same properties just for fluid inside the cell. for this general purpose through this project we are going to measure viscoelastic properties of any polymeric fluid by optical tweezers which has an ability for measuring displacement of micron particle with accuracy of nm. first...
Fabrication of a Centrifugal Microfluidic System for Cell-free DNA Isolation from whole Blood as a Biomarker
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Saadatmand, Maryam (Supervisor) ; Garshasbi, Masoud (Co-Supervisor)
Abstract
Today, medical science has come to the conclusion that the best time to start treating a disease is in its early stages. Therefore, the topic of early detection has been widely welcomed in scientific circles. Today, one of the safest methods for early detection in medicine is the study of biomarkers. These biomarkers include CTC, cfRNA, cfDNA, Exosome, etc. For instance, in the discussion of early cancer detection, the US Food and Drug Administration has so far identified two biomarkers, cfDNA and CTC, as the safest markers. The cfDNA marker is also widely used not only in the diagnosis of cancer, but also in the field of sex diagnosis and fetal Down syndrome in the first weeks of pregnancy....
A Dynamic Mesh Computational Fluid Dynamics Model of Lung on a Chip
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Sani, Mehdi (Supervisor) ; Khayyat, Ali Akbar (Supervisor)
Abstract
Recent investigations on organs-on-chip devices have broadened our insight into the functions of the organs and their responses to pharmaceuticals. Studies on improving the efficiency of these chips are on going. The development of chips for growing various organs and possibly their possible interconnection are other hot topics in this field. This research is an attempt to simulate a Lung-on-a-Chip (LOC) device using Ansys Fluent software. Currently a new experimental technique for setting up a lung-on-a-chip device has been made public (Zamprogno et.al.ˏ̎ Second-generation lung-on-a-Chip with an array of stretchable alveoli made with a biological memvrane ̎ ˏComm. Biologyˏ2021ˏ4:168.). This...
