An Investigative Study on Iranian Bitumens Compatibility with SHRP Performance Grading System, and Production of the Needed Grades
, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology ; Tabatabaee, Nader (Supervisor)
Abstract
This investigative study intends to identify and characterize bitumen from seven Iranian bitumen production plants according to the Superpave Performance Grading (PG) system, conventional classic tests, and chemical separation tests. The study then compares the identified performance grades with the thirteen performance-grade binders required for specific climatic zones in Iran. It is observed that the variety of available binders is not adequate to fully cover the required PGs. Blending was initially considered as a suitable and economic method for production of the missing performance grades. However due to similar rheological properties of bitumen samples, resulting in nearly identical...
Application of Polymer and Nanoparticles to Improve the Properties of Bitumen Derived From Acidic Sludge
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Ramazani Saadat Abadi, Ahmad (Supervisor) ; Shojaei, Akbar (Supervisor)
Abstract
Study of the recycling of acidic sludge waste produced from oil refineries and its application in road pavements is the one of the most important issues. Disposal of this sludge has always put the nature at risk. In this research, preliminary NPS bitumen was derived through neutralization and processes. NPS was modified by some thermoplastic elastomers such as SEBS, SBS, EVA, … and SBR and NBR rubbers. Also as a ionic and surface modified organoclay, C15A was used in three different weight percent. Rheological and performance behavior of pure bitumen and modified ones was studied using of standard tests for simulating traffic load. Behavior evaluation tests was included dynamic frequency...
Evaluating the Effect of Crumb Rubber on the Fracture Properties of Asphaltic Materials Using a Standardized Composite
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Motamed, Arash (Supervisor)
Abstract
Fatigue cracking has a major impact on the performance of flexible pavements. Many test methods have been established to evaluate and estimate the fatigue life of asphaltic materials. Most of these test methods cannot successfully examine the fatigue properties of asphaltic materials. Recent studies demonstrate that using a standardized composite, which consists of glass beads and asphalt binder, can simulate the stress states that binder experiences in the field. This research used standardized composite to investigate the effect of crumb rubber on the fracture properties of asphaltic materials. To validate the test results, the authors conducted fracture tests on the Fine Aggregate Matrix...
