On the Perfomance of a Combination of Base Isolation System and Dampers in Response of Buildings
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Rahimzadeh Rofooei, Fayaz (Supervisor) ; Attari, Nader (Supervisor)
Abstract
The present work investigates two basic technologies to dissipate seismic energy and protect the buildings from damaging effects of earthquakes. Investigating the performance of a combination of the Base Isolation system and energy dissipating systems (Dampers) is the main objective of this research. A literature survey is first conducted on the development of each of these systems. In the next step, the design procedure for each of these elements wasreviewed. Finally the application of both elements in seismic mitigation of buildings was investigated. Various time history analyses were performed on a number of structural models with and without these elements to examine the efficiency of...

Abstract
One of the passive control systems that are used widely in today’s buildings are metallic yielding dampers. Metallic yielding dampers by absorbing earthquake input energy, prevent inelastic defromations form in beams and columns. In this research, the behavior of an innovated metallic yielding damper, named pistonic damper is investigated. This damper consists of a number of circular parallel plates with constant or variable thickness that dissipate seismic input energy by flexure yielding in small displacements. at large displacements stress field in plates is changed and this caused the stiffness and strength of damper are increased and show shell behavior. this kind of behavior...
Design of Passive Control Systems for Nonlinear Structures Using Active Control Algorithms and Modification of Structural Stiffness, Strength and Damping
, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology ; Ahmadizadeh, Mehdi (Supervisor) ; Rofoei, Fayaz Rahimzadeh (Co-Supervisor)
Abstract
The subject of this research is design of passive control systems for nonlinear structures using active control algorithms and modification of structural stiffness, strength and damping. All the systems considered are the categorized as the shear-type buildings. Furthermore, pole assignment and sliding mode algorithms are used as the proposed algorithms. The method used here to reduce the response of the system (the word “response” is referred to the absolute acceleration and inter-story of stories) to the optimum or desired values, implements the stiffness and strength reduction and increasing the damping. Reduction of stiffness and strength are used to prevent damaging non-structural and...
Numerical and Analytical Assessment of a Novel Metallic Yielding Damper

Abstract
In this study, a new type of yielding metal dampers is proposed and evaluated numerically in finite element software. The damper consists of three main components, the core, the surrounding shell and the shear plates. These three components are interconnected in parallel and They are designed in such a way that when the system is under axial loading, the plates are much weaker than the shell and the core to remain in operation and elastic behavior until the end of the system and only the plates absorb the energy of the incident with their inertial shear behavior. This damper can be installed at the end of the Chevron braces, crossbar and diagonal. The use of the damper at the end of the...
