Optimization of Oily and Biological Sludge Digestion and Dewatering Process for Arak Refinery Wastewater Treatment Plant

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Jalouli, Alireza (Author) ; Borghei, Mehdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Different strategies for the treatment and disposal of petroleum and biological sludge found in the treatment and reuse unit of Arak Petroleum Refinery have been studied in the present study. To this end, the resources found in the literature corresponding to the different fields of sludge treatment were studied and a summary of them which was required by this research was mentioned in the thesis. Considering the problems bound to the wastewater treatment unit of this refinery plant and the previous studies, two completely separate strategies were devised. The first one concerns petroleum and biological sludge being produced continuously. The method of aerobic fixation of petroleum sludge by...

Dehydration of THF Using Different Zeolites

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Malmali, Mohammad Mahdi (Author) ; Molaei Dehkordi, Asghar (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The aim of this work was to investigate the performance of different kinds of Linde type A zeolite (LTA) for the dehydration of Tetrahydrofuran (THF)-water solution. Batch experiments were carried out to evaluate the effect of various operating parameters such as contact time, initial concentration, mixing temperature (10, 15,and 25 C), amount of adsorbent, and zeolite type(3A, 4A, and 5A zeolites). In theoretical studies, we took the advantage of several types of equilibrium model isotherms such as Langmuir, Freundlich, Dubin-Kaganer-Radushkevich (DKR) to describe the experimental adsorption data. Besides, three adsorption kinetic models including pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order,...

Kinetics Study and Determining an Optimum Reactor Condition for Dimethyl-ether Synthesis by Dehydration of Methanol over Nano-Crystalline γ-Al2O3

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Alamolhoda, Sarah (Author) ; Kazemeini , Mohammad (Supervisor) ; Khorashe, Farhad (Supervisor) ; Khandan, Nahid (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Dimethyl Ether (DME) is a pure and economic fuel which can be used as a suitable alternative for diesel fuels. Two processes are traditionally used for DME synthesis: producing methanol from synthesis gas and then dehydrating it to DME (direct process), and converting methanol into DME in a catalytic dehydration reactor over a solid-acid catalyst (indirect process), in which the indirect process seems to have economical advantage. In this research, the γ-Al2O3 catalyst was synthesized through precipitation process and then characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) and porosimetry analysis. Afterwards this catalyst was utilized in methanol dehydration reaction in a slurry reactor. Next,...

Preparation a Polymeric Membrane for Dehydration of Acetic Acid

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mirfarah, Hesam (Author) ; Mousavi, Abbas (Supervisor) ; Bastani, Dariush (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The separation ofacetic acids in binary water solutions hasbeenstudied using a reverse osmosis (RO) membrane. Thin film composite polyamide membrane is used in this study.Thin-film composite (TFC) membrane was prepared through the interfacial polymerization between m-phenylenediamine (MPD) and trimesoyl chloride (TMC) on the polysulphone support membrane. The solute permeation was carried out under applied pressure of 5 bar at 25°C. In this work the effect of various synthesis conditions on the membrane performance was investigated. Parametric studies were conducted by varyingconcentration of reactants, reaction time, curing time and curing temperature. By suitable combination of these...

Design of Adsorption Pretreatment Unit of Natural Gas Feed for LNG

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Sheikh Alivand, Masoud (Author) ; Farhadi, Fatholah (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In the present study, simultaneous adsorption of water, mercaptans, carbon dioxide and heavy hydrocarbons on three layers bed, namely Activated Alumina, 4A and 13X Molecular Sieve, on PTSA process is designed and simulated for LNG production. The level of water and mercaptan should be decreased to less than 0.1 ppmv at the bottom of zeolite 4A and 3 ppmv at the bottom of zeolite 13X layer respectively. The main purpose of this study is to investigate the dynamic simulation of multi-component adsorption on a multi-layer bed and to predict the effect of different operational variables on adsorption performance. Multi-layer bed decreases the investment cost and operational challenges in...

Labratoary Studies of Ozonation Pretreatment for Anaerobic Digestion of Waste Thickened Active Sludge

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Hodaei Asfahani, Mahdi (Author) ; Vossoughi, Manouchehr (Supervisor) ; Ghasemi, Shahnaz (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The best method for stabilizing sludge is anaerobic digestion, In addition to reducing the amount of volatile solids; it produces biogas, which can be considered as a sustainable energy source for wastewater treatment plants. However, the most important factor limiting the process of digestion is the sludge hydrolysis, the best way to increase the speed of hydrolysis is to pre-treatment the sludge before entering the digester; One of the most effective pretreatment methods is pre-treatment by ozone gas, This gas, which is highly unstable, quickly reacts with the wall of the bacterial cell and oxidizes it due to its high oxidizing properties And accelerates the process of sludge hydrolysis....

Development of Black-Box Model and Fault Tolerant Control of Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cell Based on Experimental Data

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Khanafari, Ali (Author) ; Alasty, Aria (Supervisor) ; Kermani, Mohammad Jafar (Supervisor) ; Asghari, Saeed (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
Today, the world is facing the limited resources of fossil fuels and the pollution caused by them. One of the best alternatives that can be offered to fossil fuels is the use of hydrogen in fuel cell technology. Polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell is one of the types of fuel cell that has a significant advantage over other types of fuel cell in terms of low working temperature and high performance speed. In order to become more widespread, the fuel cell must be freed from the two problems of uncertainty and short life. These two factors can be improved by using a condition monitoring system in both stationary and transportation applications. By using continuous status monitoring and error...
