Anomalous Reflection and Transmission in Resonant Magneto-Optic Structures

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Pahlavan, Payman (Author) ; Mehrany, Khashayar (Supervisor) ; Rajaei, Behzad (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
In this thesis, light transmission in dielectric slit arrays on metallic and magneto-optical material has been analyzed by mode matching method together with numerical simulations on commercial softwares such as Comsol Multiphysics and CST microwave studio. It has been shown that light transmission can be attributed to either the Fabry-Perot resonances or a collective resonance phenomenon across the array. In the first case, the transmission resonance is related to the slit depth and is confined to a single slit. In the second case; however, the resonant mechanism affects several neighboring slits. Surprisingly the former is converted to the latter by increasing the slit depth. Furthermore...

Optimization of Wave Energy Convertors by Genetic Algorithm

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Farshforoush Imani, Amir (Author) ; Abbaspour Tehrani Fard, Majid (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Given the great potential of energy resources, the utilization of wave energy for electricity production can make a significant contribution to the renewable energy portfolio of coastal nations. There are, however, many challenges that must be overcome in order for wave energy to be commercially viable. One of the key objectives of the wave energy industry today is to produce commercially viable wave farms by placing multiple wave energy converters (WECs) together in an array. The full problem of calculating the power absorbtion of an array of WECs requires not only the complete knowledge of the hydrodynamics of each individual body, but also the scattering and radiation effects between all...

Position Detection for Optical Tweezers Using Moiré Technique

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Khorshad, Ali Akbar (Author) ; Seyed-Reihani, Nader (Supervisor) ; Tavassoly, Mohammad Taghi (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
Optical Tweezers (OT) are non-invasive micro-manipulation tools based on a tightly focused Gaussian laser beam for applying and measuring pico-Newton range optical forces. They are also utilized for trapping and moving particles and biological specimens. The force exerted by OT is mainly determined by detecting the position of the trapped object inside the harmonic potential well of OT. Conventionally,a Quadrant Photo-Diode (QPD) positioned at the Back Focal Plane (BFP) of the condenser lens provides the position of the bead with MHz temporal and nanometer spatial resolution. As a disadvantage of this detection scheme, it is impossible to obtain simultaneously the maximal lateral and axial...

Utilization of Different Optical Wavelengths in Diffractive Deep Neural Networks for Object Classification in Multi-Channel Images

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ebrahimi, Sevda (Author) ; Vosughi Vahdat, Bijan (Supervisor) ; Kavehvash, Zahra (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Diffractive deep neural network is an optical machine-learning framework that uses diffractive surfaces, optical devices, electro-optic devices and engineered matterials to optically perform computational tasks. These diffractive networks, after their desing and train phase by computers and machine learning algorithms, are physically fabricated using 3D printing or lithography, to actualize the model of trained network. Machine learning processes and alghorithms are performed through light-matter interaction and diffraction of light. This procedure is done at the speed of light and without the need of any power, except for the light illumination for the input object. In comparison with...
