Failure Tolerance of Epidemic Spreading in Complex Network
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Jalili, Mahdi (Supervisor)
Abstract
Complex networks serve as generic models for many social, technological and biological systems that have been shown to share a number of common structural properties such as power-law degree distribution and small-worldness. These networks determine interactions and influence the spread of diseases, behaviours and ideas. Epidemics and failures like new behaviours ideas and innovations can spread throughout a network and prevent it from doing its functionalities. In this work, we investigate error and attack tolerance of epidemic spreading in complex networks. The main content of this thesis is arranged in three sections as follows: Firstly, the effect of random and systematic failures is...
A Review of Quantum Uncertainty Principle and Some of Its Consequences
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Rezakhani, Ali (Supervisor)
Abstract
In quantum mechanics, every system is described by a state function. The state function determines the probability of different outcomes of a certain measurement which is performed on the physical system. The connection between uncertainties about different measurements is presented by inequalities best known as Heisenberg’s uncertainty inequality. In face, the uncertainty relations state that there exist incompatible measurements, to which the outcomes of measurements cannot be predicted simultaneously. Although the uncertainty relations can be inferred from mathematical formalism of quantum mechanics, there is a profound relationship with other aspects of physics. Here we investigate the...
Reliability Enhancement of SSD-based Storage Systems Using Erasure Codes
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Miremadi, Ghasem (Supervisor)
Abstract
The use of flash-based Solid State Disks (SSDs) has been increased in the past decades because of their high performance and low power consumption. As SSDs have no moving mechanical parts, they are more reliable than HDDs. SSDs have specific errors, such as read, program, and erase disturbs, data retention, and endurance. It is so common in storage systems to apply an array of disks called Redundant Array of Independent Disks (RAID) together for the aim of reliability and performance. Erasure codes are one of the main methods applied in storage systems for the aim of reliability. Erasure codes increase the reliability of storage systems by protecting them against disk failures and sector...
Optimal Design & Fabrication of a Non-Flat Sun Sensor Array With Large Field of View
, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology ; Durali, Mohammad (Supervisor) ; Jalali, Mir Abbas (Supervisor)
Abstract
Modern sensors consist of arrays of detectors specially arranged to enhance precision, capabilities, and field of view (FOV). Sensor arrays can have multiple functionalities such as the simultaneous detection of position and motion. We use a linear sensor model and develop an optimization method to design an array of photodiodes. Our objective function minimizes bias and variance estimations. We introduce a maximum likelihood technique to approximate and determine the bias caused by measurement errors, and verify our theory by statistically complete simulations. We apply our theory to design an optimal sun sensor. The sensor has a predefined conical FOV, and its accuracy is controlled by a...
