The Interpretation of Information in a Pragmatic Approach
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Shafiee, Afshin (Supervisor)
Abstract
Different information theories have been provided in recent decades because of the numerous applications of information notion in different fields of sciences. Meanwhile, pragmatic theory of information is one of the most common concepts in this field which has been studied remarkably in recent decades. Different aspects of this theory (in J. G. Roederer’s sense of attitude) are critically assessed in this thesis. Roederer considers the information as a relative concept in which interaction plays fundamental role. Moreover, information is an agent which leads to an univocal correspondence between the sender and the recipient, so that the presence of a certain spatial or temporal pattern...

(Supervisor)
Abstract
The inferential approach, in contrast with classic model of coding-decoding, regards communication something more than the mere decoding of the received message, and points to the inference as a pivotal element for the discovery of the intentional meaning in a communication. This line of research was beginned with the works of Paul Grice in the literature of the pragmatics. His theory proposes its cooperation principle and conversational maxims for that aim.Relevance theory, while accepting the pivotal role of the inference, replaces cognitive principle of relevance with those Gricean rules. Hence, it proposes a more comprehensive explanation of communication, with more simplicity and...
Capacity of Memory Quantum Channels
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Karimipour, Vahid (Supervisor)
Abstract
One of the most important problems of quantum information theory is to try to determine the channel capacity of noisy quantum channels. Alice would like to send Bob information over many uses of a noisy quantum communication link. As the line is usually noisy, this cannot be done perfectly, and so they must use suitable coding methods to minimize the error. Different coding methods yield different rates of information transition and different errors, the channel capacity is defined as the maximum rate at which information may be transferred with vanishing error in the limit of a large number of channel uses. There are a variety of different capacities, depending upon whether Alice and Bob...
The Particle-Field Theory On The Possibility of New Formulation of Micro-phenomena
,
M.Sc. Thesis
Sharif University of Technology
;
Shafiee, Afshin
(Supervisor)
Abstract
In this thesis we are going to explore a new formalism in micro domain which describes quantum phenomena in a realistic casual fashion by introducing an unified concept of matter, energy, and Information. In this theory, a micro-entity, e.g. an electron, is a combination of a particle and its associated field integrated to a new entity called particle-field. The dynamics of such system will be analyzed. Then, some quantum examples which have controversial aspects will be discussed within the new theory. In a generalized form of formalism, the non-linear Schrödinger Equation is introduced, which enables us to predict some experimental data for common Quantum Mechanical stationary systems....
The Role of Symmetry in Quantifying Information
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Shafie, Afshin (Supervisor)
Abstract
In this thesis we want to discuss about a new approach about information. Using this approach, Scott Muller builds his formalism on two basic concepts: distinguishablity and symmetry. His claim is that there is an inverse relation between symmetry and information. It means that if we have a symmetric system we need less information (Than an asymmetric system) to describe it. Here, we are going to explore the role and significance of symmetry in probabilistic distributions of the double-slit experiment, and we want to show if there is a predetermined relation between symmetry and information or not.
A Critical Investigation of Concept and Situation of Time, Information and Entropy in Thermodynamics and their Relation
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Golshani, Mehdi (Supervisor)
Abstract
One of the important issues in the fundamental physics is the arrow of time. According to the fundamental theories, motion is symmetry with respect to the passage of time while on a macroscopic level time has direction. In the macroscopic models the arrow of time is provided by the Second Law of Thermodynamics. The thermodynamic arrow is often linked to the cosmological arrow of time, because it is ultimately about the boundary conditions of the early universe.Recently people have tried to suppose this challenge as a fundamental issue and use this as fundamental assumption in their theories.A number of models have attempted to solve the problem based on the concept of information....
The Role and Significance of the Concept of Information in Physical Phenomena
, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology ; Shafiee, Afshin (Supervisor)
Abstract
Undoubtedly, the concept of information has an outstanding role in our description of physical systems and biological processes. In the framework of pragmatic approach, information is a useful notion through which any physical event gets its significance. In this approach, information can be understood and recognized while it is capable of producing new information. Thus, the meaning of information depends on our recognition and understanding as conscious beings. Accordingly, the following question may arise: where is the role of conscious being in the emergence of physical properties in Nature? To answer this fundamental question, we first investigate how information enters the physics, in...
Application of Axiomatic Design in Appropriate Design Selection
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Houshmand, Mahmoud (Supervisor)
Abstract
Under current competition situation of marketplace, customers’ needs force organizations to make effective decisions about their productions or services. Organizations have to present good products in suitable time and place than their competitors. Indeed customers’ needs effect on making decision about product, service, system or process designs. Problem definition is the most important step in design process. It is possible that, different designers make different designs to satisfy similar requirements because of subjective nature of problem definition. It may results countless design solutions and the best design must be selected among them with considering many criteria. There are many...
New Approaches to the Second Law of Thermodynamics and the Principle of Entropy Increasing
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Golshani, Mehdi (Supervisor)
Abstract
In this dissertation we study the derivation of the second law of thermodynamics from an underlying physics. After discussing different methods for this derivation, we conclude that the only way to fulfill this, is to use a probabilistic mechanics which has probability as an inherent concept in itself, not as a supplementary one like statistical mechanics. This mechanics in contrary to the Newtonian mechanics, should be indeterministic
Storage of Information in Chemical Compounds
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Shafiee, Afshin (Supervisor)
Abstract
Regarding the notable progress in communication and competition theories as well as natural sciences, the study of the concepts of information has displayed more attention in recent years.Information, entropy and energy are interrelated concepts. In one hand one can infer that entropy is a quantitation measure of information and on the other hand systems which carry information can accumulated energy. Here, we are going to survey the qualitation as well as quantitation aspects of information with concentration on the behavior of chemical agents as information processors
