Implementation and Analysis of Optical Isolation using Reciprocal and Nonreciprocal Elements

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Pooya Fard, Ali (Author) ; Mehrany, Khashayar (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this thesis we study the possibility of unidirectional transmission of light using reciprocal and nonreciprocal elements. Unidirectional transmission will allow us to separate the coupling of light into and out of resonators and design unidirectional waveguides. We start by studying the effects of one-sided modulations of dielectric constant of reciprocal structures. One-sided modulation will satisfy the phase matching condition for the coupling of two waves only in one direction. Using coupled mode theory, we study one sided modulation in layered media. Next, we find the exact solution to such strucures using transfer matrix method and analyze one-sided modulation in waveguide...

Design and Fabrication of a Spiral Microchannel for High Resolution Blood Cell Separation

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mehran, Amir Hossein (Author) ; Saeedi, Mohammad Saeed (Supervisor) ; Taghipoor, Mojtaba (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
In medical science, preparing a high purity sample of certain kinds of cells plays an important role in studying the characteristics and functionality of cells, detecting in vitro harmful pathogens and helping to find ways of preventing and treating diseases that cause cellular disorders in the human body. The goal of this research is to improve the spiral microchannel with stair-like cross section in order to separate white blood cells from whole blood. First, the efficiency of this method was evaluated numerically, using a developed finite element model. Then, the desired microchannel mold was made using the micromiling method, and we fabricated the chip using soft lithography and pasting...

Experimental Study of Circulating Tumor Cell (CTC) by Application of Microfluidic Systems and its Related Characterization Studies

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Hakim, Maziar (Author) ; Khorasheh, Farhad (Supervisor) ; Vossoughi, Manouchehr (Supervisor) ; Alemzadeh, Iran (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Isolation and characterization of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) found in blood samples of cancer patients have been considered as a reliable source for cancer prognosis and diagnosis. A new continuous microfluidic platform has been designed in this investigation for simultaneous capture and characterization of CTCs based on their deformability. The deformability-based chip (D-Chip) consists of two sections of separation and characterization where slanted weirs with a gap of 7 μm were considered. Although sometimes CTCs and leukocytes have the same size, the deformability differs in such a way that can be exploited for enrichment purposes. MCF7 and MDA-MB-231 cell lines were used for the...

Design and Implementation of a Bidirectional Dual Active Bridge Converter

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Tavakolian, Sadra (Author) ; Zolghadri, Mohammad Reza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Grid simulator is a system that, as a voltage source, can produce various current waveforms in power grid at its output, and also as a load, can draw different currents of different loads from the power grid. Grid simulators may be used for testing power grid connected systems, such as chargers, power supplies, etc. In this thesis the system is consisted of programmable AC current source, dual active bridge converter and back-to-back grid-tied inverter. Dual active bridge can normally operate while the current source is in different modes of function, such as constant current, constant power and constant impedance. Depending on the mode of function, the current at the DC link can behave...
