, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Pakdel, Hamed (Author) ; Koochakzadeh, Mohammad Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this study, standard composite laminate specimens with micro and nano sized particle additives are made to study the effect of the additives on the fracture toughness of the specimens in standard tests. The composite laminates are made from epoxy resin and unidirectional glass fibers. The mode I and mode II fracture toughness of the specimens are measured under various loadings in standard tests. The fracture surface is then, fractogaphed by microscopic instruments. In conclusion, the fracture behavior of laminated composites, toughened by micro and nano particles is discussed. The results show that using rubber particles will improve fracture toughness of neat epoxy resin and laminated...

    Abstract
Today, energy crises and the environmental pollution have become serious problems for the human being. To address these problems, extensive efforts have been made to replace fossil fuels with other clean energy resources such as fuel cells. In the meantime, polymer electrolyte fuel cells are very important as they are now commonly used in the field of transportation, and their importance become even more obvious as we consider the fact that the by-products from electricity production by such cells are simply water and heat. This research studies the efficiency of the polymer called “polysulfone” as an electrolyte fuel cell, which has the above named mechanical thermal and chemical...

Stabilization and Improvement of Collapsible Soils, Using Electrokinetics & Nanomaterials and Assessment Its Strength Parameters by Unsaturated Oedometer

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Hosseini, Arash Mohammad (Author) ; Haeri, Mohsen (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Loess as a kind of collapsible soils is a well-known Aeolian deposit, which is characterized by some specific Engineering properties including high initial void ratio, relatively low initial density and water content and high percentage of fine-grained particles. Collapsible soils such as loess, sustain large stress under dry condition. However, they experience a high and sudden decrease in their volume by reaching to their critical moisture content. As a result, their natural condition is not suitable for construction works if the possibility of the exposure of the soil to excessive water is present. This research presents the utilization of an innovative method for stabilization and...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Valishzadeh, Arsalan (Author) ; Haeri, Mohsen (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Collapsible soils, a kind of which is Loess, are mainly in silt size in the nature, and are present in many part of Iran, such as Golestan, Semnan, Khorasan, Yazd, Kerman, Hormozgan, Sistan and Balouchestan provinces. when the water content of the soil is lower than a critical water content, the soil shows high shear strength. However, increase in water content due to leakage of water, wastewater or heavy rains in the presence of enough induced pressure, when a certain coupled hydro-mechanical condition is reached, will result in a sudden collapse or excessive deformation. Hence, improvement or stabilization of this kind of soil is of high importance. In this research, specimens are prepared...

Experimental Investigation of Fractures’ Water Shut-off in Low Salinity Water Injection Using Preformed Particle Gels

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Sanandaji, Farshid (Author) ; Fatemi, Mobin (Supervisor) ; Ghazanfari, Mohammad Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
As the reservoir matures, especially in fractured reservoirs, oil production is usually accompanied by the production of some unwanted water. Water production causes environmental problems and imposes high costs on the production system, including the cost of separating water and oil, corrosion of facility, and sometimes, leading to abandoning well. One way to solve this problem is to use gels as a blocking agent. Today, preformed particle gels are used as an alternative to in situ gels, which can solve some issues of in-situ gels, such as uncertainty in gelling time and penetration depth. This research comprises three main parts. In the first part, four samples of preformed particle gels...

An Investigation on the Role of Silica Hybrid Nanoparticles on the Properties of Styrene Butadiene Rubber (SBR)

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mohammadi, Ali (Author) ; Shojaei, Akbar (Supervisor) ; Salkhi Khasraghi, Samaneh (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
Hybrid nanoparticle comprising of nanosilica (NS) and nanodiamond (ND), as denoted by ND@NS, was synthesized by a two-step chemistry route and then incorporated into styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) at low concentrations up to 5 phr by a two-roll mill. Physical hybrids of NS and ND, i.e., ND&NS, with a weight ratio similar to chemical hybrid (80:20 for NS:ND), were also incorporated into SBR. Field emission scanning electron microscopy observations revealed very fine dispersion of nanoparticles in the case of physical hybrids (ND&NS); whereas, agglomerations and aggregation of nanoparticles were evidenced for ND@NS. Tensile and dynamic mechanical analyses exhibited a higher reinforcing effect...
