Analysis of Oscillations in Linear Fractional Order Systems

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Siami, Milad (Author) ; Tavazoei, Mohammad Saleh (Supervisor)
    Abstract
This thesis studies undamped oscillations generated by marginally stable fractional order linear time invariant (LTI) systems. In this study, the concept of integral curve is developed for fractional order LTI systems. The proposed concept is obtained based on equivalent integer order linear time varying (LTV) systems. Then, an analytical approach is proposed to be used for harmonic analysis of such oscillations in marginally stable commensurate order LTI systems. Also, it is shown that the Q-semi norm of the limit sets for a trajectory of these systems can be analytically determined based on the Q-semi norm of the initial condition, where Q is a specific matrix. Moreover, this result is...

LBM Computational Simulation of Oscillations Caused by Formation and Detachment of Drops

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mardani, Ramin (Author) ; Taeibi Rahni, Mohammad (Supervisor) ; Ebrahimi, Abbas (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Formation and detachment of drops are of fundamental importance in studying two-phase flows, such as ink jet printing, emulsion, and spray. Drops are formed under the effects of surface tension forces. After formation, forces like gravity detach the drop from the rest of the fluid. The flow rate is varied from dripping to jetting regime. In this project, formation and detachment of drops were simulated, using LBM with phase field model, which can simulate flows with high-density ratios and is a robust method for applying wetting condition on the walls. Results were validated using single-phase and two-phase flows. After code validation, the oscillations caused by formation and detachment of...

Experimental Investigation of Geometric Parameters Effect on Energy Harvesting from FIV in Bluff Bodies

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Safari, Mohammad Hossein (Author) ; Ebrahimi, Abbas (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The purpose of this research is to design and construct a test stand for the study of the kinematic and flow pattern of bluff bodies oscillating motion due to the induction of wake vortices. An experimental investigation was conducted to explore the effect of bluff bodies cross section to optimize the amount of electrical energy withdraw by electromagnetic harvester. The tests are carried out on cylinders with square section and rectangular sections with a length to width ratio of 1/2 and 2/1 and height of 50 cm, at speeds of 5 to 35 m/s in eiffel type wind tunnel. The effect of cylinder cross-section on the amount of energy harvested showed that the amplitude of oscillation in square-shaped...

Laboratory Investigation of Dispersion under Interaction of Surface Waves and Flexible Stems

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Hadian, Alireza (Author) ; Jamali, Mirmosadegh (Supervisor)
    Abstract
This experimental study investigates the interaction between surface waves and flexible stems in aquatic environments, focusing on the case where the wave frequency is close to the natural frequency of the stems. Aquatic plants have significant structural and ecological effects on aquatic environments, inducing various changes in the flow passing through them. In this research, a polyurethane stem model is used, which is submerged and randomly placed in water. The oscillation amplitude and pollutant dispersion are investigated. The experiments were conducted at four frequencies of 0.7, 0.83, 1, and 1.125 Hz, two wave heights of 2 and 3 cm, and two densities of 0.8 and 1.2%. Image processing...

Experimental Investigation of Dynamics of Ferrofluid-Based Liquid Marbles Under External Magnetic Fields

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mohammad Rashidi, Mahbod (Author) ; Shafii, Mohammad Behshad (Supervisor) ; Taghipoor, Mojtaba (Supervisor) ; Bijarchi, Mohamad Ali (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
Liquid marbles are droplets enwrapped by a layer of micro/nanoparticles. Due to the insulation of inner fluid from the environment, the lower evaporation rate of the fluid, and the capability of motion even on hydrophilic surfaces, these liquid marbles, as an alternative to conventional droplets, have attracted the attention of researchers in digital microfluidics. Utilizing ferrofluid as the liquid core of the liquid marbles enables remote control over the liquid marbles by an external magnetic field. In this research, the dynamic behavior of ferrofluid liquid marbles under the magnetic field generated by an electromagnet is investigated. In this research, governing physics on the motion of...
