Simulation and plant wide Control of Combined Pervaporation/Distillation Process for MTBE Production
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Pishvaei, Mahmood Reza (Supervisor)
Abstract
In this thesis we are about to simulate and control an MTBE production unit which use membrane instead of azeotropic distillation tower. At first an MTBE Production Unit with two distillation towers in separation part is simulated whit traditional method. One of these distillation towers is azeotropic. Then azeotropic distillation tower is replaced with membrane. After simulation the unit with best process indicators is selected. The goal is minimization of fixed and operating costs. In the next stage the best control loops in each unit is selected. The unit with best control indicators is determined. Control indicators are load rejection and set point tracking. All units have been simulated...
Membrane Preparation For Organic Compounds Dehydration
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Musavi, Abbas (Supervisor) ; Ramazani, Ahmad (Co-Advisor)
Abstract
Isopropanol purifying denotes dehydration of it to utilize in industries become important these days. Conventional process like distillation could not produce this product in high purity. Using membrane-based process, pervaporation, to dehydrate Isopropanol and other organic compound has been noticed in the last years. Among all type of membranes to dehydrate alcohols, poly (vinyl alcohol) is more effective due to its high hydrophilic characteristic. But it swallows in aqueous solutions and decrease its selectivity. To enhance structural and separation properties Chitosan, TiO2 and glurataldehyde added to polymeric membranes. Nine membranes have been made in this study that can be grouped in...
Preparation of Polyvinylidene Fuoride Membrane for Separation of Aroma Compounds in Apple Juice
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Roosta Azad, Reza (Supervisor) ; Mousavi, Abbas (Co-Advisor)
Abstract
Many aroma compounds of fruit juice recovered by thermal evaporation and distillation processes can lead to undesirable chemical changes and even their loss. Pervaporation is a promising process for the recovery of volatile organic compounds from their aqueous solutions. In the present work, pervaporation recovery of Ethyl acetate as a model solution of apple juice’s aroma compound was evaluated with polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and ethylvinylacetate (EVA) membranes. For PVDF and PES membranes in the feed concentration of 250-1000 ppm and the operating temperature of 30 ºC, separating factor , respectively, was obtained in the range of 67-70 and 49-53, and also total permeation flux was...
Preparation of Polyethersulfone Membrane for Separation of Aroma Compounds in Grape Juice
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Roostaazad, Reza (Supervisor) ; Mousavi, Abbas (Co-Advisor)
Abstract
Many aroma compounds of fruit juice recovered by thermal processes like evaporation and distillation can lead to undesirable chemical changes and even their loss. Pervaporation is a promising process for the recovery of volatile organic compounds from their aqueous solutions. In the present work, pervaporation recovery of Butyl acetate as a model solution ofgrape juice aroma compoundwas evaluated with polyethersulfone (PES) and ethylvinylacetate (EVA) membranes. PES membrane generally showed better selectivity so that the separation factor at the concentration of 500 ppmand the temperature of 30°C for PES and EVA membranes, respectively, was 230.78 and 156.9. The effect of two operating...
Desulfurization of Middle Distillate Fractions by Membrane Technology
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Soltaneih, Mohammad (Supervisor) ; Musavi, Abbas (Supervisor)
Abstract
In this study, the pervaporation method was used for desulfurization of gasoline. Thiophene was used as a sulfur agent and n-heptane as a representative of hydrocarbon compounds in gasoline. The composite membranes of the active PDMS layer containing the UiO-66 metal-organic framework nanoparticles are based on porous membrane PVDF. The effect of adding PVP polymer on the porosity of the PVDF membrane has been investigated. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectrum (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) have been used to characterize nanoparticles and synthesized membranes. The effect of adding nanoparticles on the membrane performance and its sowelling effect in...
