Optimal Nonlinear Control of Poly Vinyl Acetate CSTR
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Pishvaie, Mahmoud Reza (Supervisor)
Abstract
Nonlinear nature of polymerization reactors has always attracted great attentions in various scientific areas such as modeling, simulation, dynamical behavior investigation and control engineering as well. Free radical polymerization in continuous reactors, whether in terms of design and startup or in terms of economical concerns, has numerous fans in industrial aspects. In the following thesis, the dynamical behavior of continuous stirred tank reactor of Vinyl Acetate free radical polymerization is examined in an industrial scale. A control system with optimum performance is designed for this CSTR as well. According to the common behavior of this type of reactor, it may demonstrate...
Modeling and Predictive Control of Vinyl Acetate Polymerization in Semi-batch Reactor
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Shahrokhi, Mohammad (Supervisor)
Abstract
Obtaining polymers with desired properties is very important from industrial point of view. Weight average molecular weight and polydispersity are two important polymer properties. It is also important to obtain a high monomer conversion. In this thesis production of polyvinyl acetate is considered. Under special conditions, the vinyl acetate reactor dynamics become oscillatory which makes the reactor control difficult. For obtaining polymer with desired properties, an objective function which includes weight average molecular weight, polydispersity and monomer conversion has been defined. Then by minimizing this objective function the optimal temperature trajectory is obtained. In this...
PLA/PVAc Nano-Blends for Barrier Films: Effect of Gamma Irradiation
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Forounchi, Massoud (Supervisor) ; Dadbin, Susan (Supervisor)
Abstract
Oxygen barrier properties of poly (lactic acid) (PLA) films were improved by blending it with hydrolyzed poly (vinyl acetate). Poly (vinyl acetate-co-vinyl alcohol) with vinyl alcohol contents of 0, 5, 10 and 15% was prepared using acid-catalyzed hydrolysis of poly (vinyl acetate). The Blend films of PLA/poly (VAc-co-VA) containing 0, 5, 10 and 15% of the copolymer with various degree of hydrolysis was prepared by solution-casting method. Effect of gamma irradiation on the films was examined by exposing them to radiation doses of 0, 20, 35 and 50 kGy. The films remained colorless and transparent after irradiation. Morphology of the samples characterized by optical microscopy displayed not...

Preparation and Characterization of PVDF/PVAc/CNT Nanocomposites
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Frounchi, Masoud (Supervisor)
Abstract
Many efforts have been performed on the poly(vinylidene fluoride), PVDF, due to its piezoelectric, pyroelectric and ferroelectric potentials. In this thesis Poly (vinyldene Flouride) (PVDF)/Poly (vinyl Asetate) (PVAc)/Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) and Poly (vinyldene Flouride) (PVDF)/Poly (vinyl Asetate) (PVAc)/Graphene Oxide nonasheets (GOn) nanocomposite films were prepared via solution casting method. The effect of concentration of PVAc, MWCNT and graphene oxide on PVDF nanocomposites were investigated. Graphene oxides synthesized by modified Hummer’s method. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) results showed that the crystalline structure of...
Preparation of Nanocomposites Based on PLA/PVAc Hydrogel with CNT
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Forounchi, Massoud (Supervisor)
Abstract
Polylactic acid (PLA) nanocomposite films reinforced with surface-modified carbon nanotube (CNT) particles were prepared by solution-phase methods. In order to enhance the flexibility of the film, and to improve nanoparticle dispersion throughout the final material, polyvinyl acetate (PVA) was also added to the polymeric backbone during the nanocomposite preparation process. Characteristics of the former nanocomposite films were investigated by Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) Spectroscopy, Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM), mechanical testing, and electrical resistance measurement. In this study, our results showed that increasing...
Study of the Poly (vinyl acetate)/SiO2 Nanocomposites Produced by in Situ Polymerization
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Ramazani Saadat Abadi, Ahmad (Supervisor)
Abstract
The main object of this thesis is synthesizing poly(vinyl acetate)/ colloidal silica nanocomposites via emulsion and in-situ polymerization methods. At the first, nanocomposites were produced in the presence of poly(vinyl alcohol) as the protective colloid, ammonium persulphate as the initiator and sodium bicarbonate as the buffer in an aqueous solution. Then, structural, thermal, rheological, mechanical and surface properties of produced nanocomposites with various colloidal silica content (0.5 %, 1 %, 1.5 %) were evaluated by DLS, FTIR, SEM-EDS, DSC, TGA, dynamic and steady rheological tests, tensile and shear mechanical tests, AFM and static water contact angle. The particle size of...
Preparation and Characterization of PVDF/ PVAc/ ND Nanocomposite
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Frounchi, Masood (Supervisor)
Abstract
Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) is remarkable since its mechanical properties, chemical stability and significant ferroelectricity. This Polymer has a simple chemical structure and can be found in five different crystal phases (α,β ,ɣ,δ and ε). Between these phases, beta shows a substantial pyro and piezoelectric activity since its great dipole moment. In this study PVDF/Poly(vinyl acetate)/Nanodiamond (ND) nanocomposite films were synthetized by solving in dimethylformamide adding ND particles to PVDF/PVAc blend in order to improve mechanical and piezoelectric properties. Scanning electron microscopy results showed that PVDF/PVAc are miscible and lead to a single crystal phase and dispersion...
