, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Golafshani, Ali Akbar (Supervisor) ; Toufigh, Vahab (Supervisor)
Abstract
As a result of numerous earthquakes happened in recent decades, widespread failures were observed in conventional braced frames, which were mostly created due to buckling of the braces under compression. To find a solution to overcome this problem, Ribbed Bracing System (RBS) was developed by Golafshani et al. in 2004. In this study, continuing the experimental investigation and considering the previous outcomes, the RBS bracing was redesigned based on some modifications. Then, two half-scale RBS braces with pinned frames were constructed and tested under cyclic loading. RBS systems were utilized in two options, CC-RBS and SC-RBS, in X configuration, the first of which was constantly...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Mortaheb, Mohammad Mehdi (Supervisor) ; Hassani, Nemat (Co-Advisor)
Abstract
This dissertation proposes a new platform and a new software for evaluation of urban Water Distribution Network (WDN) resilience. Resilience is considerd as the ability of an infrastructure to come back to steady state after being affected by any environmental or man-made disturbance. WDN, as an essential infrastructure, has major role on resilience and sustainability of cities and communities. Today, uninterrupted performance of WDN is a basic need of people who live in cities. This uninterrupted performance becomes bolder in face of man-made or natural disasters like earthquake. The uninterrupted performance of a system is dependent on the system’s resilience. Majority of researchers...
A Framework to Assess Effect of Interdependent Infrastructures' Disruption on Operation of Hospital during Natural Disasters
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Haj Kazem Kashani, Hamed (Supervisor)
Abstract
In earthquake-prone communities, the post-earthquake functionality of hospitals is crucial. Hospitals can dramatically reduce earthquake casualties if they can remain functional and retain service continuity. A variety of earthquake-induced problems such as damage to hospital components, unavailability of medical staff, disruption in medicine supply, and failure of supporting infrastructure systems can negatively affect the functionality of a hospital. Hospital administrators and facility managers require appropriate tools to assess the effect of these problems on hospital functionality. This research presents a probabilistic framework to assess the functionality of hospitals following...
A Framework to Select the Appropriate Combination of Retrofit and Insurance in Order to Reduce Earthquake Losses
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Haj Kazem Kashani, Hamed (Supervisor)
Abstract
The aim of this research is presentation of A framework to select the appropriate combination of retrofit and insurance in order to reduce earthquake losses. The vulnerability of buildings to earthquakes can lead to significant damage to owners and residents of these buildings. It is imperative that appropriate measures be taken to reduce these adverse effects before the risk occurs. Some of these measures, such as seismic retrofit of buildings, can reduce the vulnerability of buildings and, consequently, financial and human losses. Some other measures like insurance, in the event of an earthquake, can reduce the financial losses incurred by owners and residents of vulnerable buildings....
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Rahimi Tabar, Mohammad Reza (Supervisor)
Abstract
In this thesis, we study the resilience of complex systems under structural perturbations. After a brief review of the resilience and its importance, we show that how one can map a system of N-coupled dynamical equations onto an effective one-dimensional dynamics. This procedure is based on a nearest neighbor averaging. The obtained map, helps us study the response of the system to the effective one-dimensional control parameter, instead of all parameters that are affecting the structure of the network. Next, we use this procedure and unveil the resilience pattern of second-order Kuramoto oscillators on complex networks. Moreover, we propose a control strategy for complex systems which is...
Resilience Pattern in Neural Network
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Rahimi Tabar, Mohammad Reza (Supervisor)
Abstract
In this thesis the resilience of a neural network is examined under structural perturbation. The network consists of Spiking neurons with specific dynamics or they are binary neurons and the network is non-spiking. Neural network is a multi-dimensional and multi-stable system therefore we can map their dynamical equations to effective one-dimensional equation with one parameter which shows the environmental conditions. The resilience of the system is evaluated with respect to changes in weights and edges of the network and the the resilience pattern of the system is obtained. Finally, the recovery and control methods are briefly discussed
Developing an Efficient Framework for Investigating the Abilities of Network Reconfiguration in Improving Operational Resilience of Distribution System
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Fotuhi-Firuzabad, Mahmud (Supervisor)
Abstract
Necessity of uninterruptable electricity supply is one of the most fundamental needs nowadays. To achieve this, power system are designed and operated based on adequacy and security metrics which are based on reliability. Despite efficient influence of these metrics in normal condition, they do not have appropriate function while facing natural weather disasters. Since these events are low probability, these event do not affect adequacy metrics incredibly. Additionally, reliability metrics are compute base on intrinsic failure rate of component while each weather disaster causes specific failure rate. Furthermore, number of failures in such events is too many to be handled by N-1 operation...

Emergency Management Decision Support System Based on Bayesian Network
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Mahsuli, Mojtaba (Supervisor)
Abstract
This research proposes a probabilistic framework for decision support in emergency response. Currently, decision-making is traditionally based on data from reconnaissance teams, while there are other information sources that assist decision-making. These sources of information include social sensors, physical sensors, aerial imaging, and crowdsourcing. The information obtained from these sources is heterogeneous and uncertain, requires a probabilistic data fusion framework to be used in decision making. This research employs Bayesian Networks for this purpose. The outstanding feature of the Bayesian Network is its real-time nature, which set apart it from other methods. This feature makes...
