Abstract
Computational instruments such as personal computers (PC) are among the most important and developed inventions needed for the society. Nowadays, the fastest classical computing machines are based on the conventional semiconductor fabrication technology. But these computers cannot satisfy all of the requirements of today’s ongoing developments. Two important weaknesses of the undergoing technology are the speed of computing which is in the frontend of the semiconductor technology, and solving some complicated problems which may take years and even decades with these computers. This is while, based on quantum theory and related algorithms, solving of these problems would take much less time....

Abstract
Terahertz waves which includes frequencies between 100 GHz to 10 THz of electromagnetic spectrum have found many applications in science, medical treatments and industry. One of the recent methods to produce these waves is using nonlinear properties of superconductors based on Josephson junctions which inherently appear in some superconductors called BSCCO. Stack of intrinsic junctions of these superconducting materials can radiate terahertz waves by only applying a DC voltage across them. This Thesis investigates some of these structures based on Josephson junctions to produce coherent radiation of terahertz waves. For the optimization of the radiation power, this study also investigates...
Design and Fabrication of an Integrated Superconducting Resonator/Flux Concentrator for rf SQUID Magnetometer
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Fardmanesh, Mahdi (Supervisor)
Abstract
Ultra-sensitive magnetometers based on Radio Frequency Superconducting Quantum Interference Device (rf SQUID), have wide applications in Non-destructive Evaluation (NDE), geophysical measurements and biomagnetic measurements, especially in magnetocardiography (MCG) systems. A superconducting module coupled to rf SQUID is designed to provide a resonance frequency in GHz range (according to the electronic system frequency), as well as concentrating the magnetic flux in the effective area of SQUID. The signal can be measured through a port pumping AC power to the module. The resonator has been also implemented by lumped element tank circuits, but the quality factor of these circuits are usually...
Collective Modes in One-Dimensional Kitaev Topological Superconductor
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Kargarian, Mehdi (Supervisor)
Abstract
In this thesis, we analyze the Higgs mode in one-dimensional Kitaev topological superconductor. We first review the macroscopic (Ginzburg-Landau Theory) and microscopic (BCS Theory) derivation of oscillations of the energy gap in conventional superconductor in the presence of an electromagnetic field as a perturbation. We explain both analytical (based on Anderson pseudospins) and numerical (Density Matrix Formalism) approaches for calculations. The goal is to find the temporal evolution of the superconductor energy gap which is the order parameter of the system. In our investigation, we will see that we could reduce our problem to studying the amplitude of the energy gap in the Kitaev...
Design and Fabrication of Self-biased High-Tc Superconducting Radiation Detector
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Fardmanesh, Mehdi (Supervisor)
Abstract
A bolometer is a device for measuring electromagnetic waves, which uses the heating of a material with variable resistance to temperature. Due to the existing limitations and quality improvement, superconducting materials are used in the manufacture of these devices. In this dissertation, the construction and improvement of the components of a high temperature transient edge superconducting radiometer with terahertz detection capability is discussed. In the construction of these detectors, the superconducting material YBa2Cu3O7-x is used as a thermal sensor with a transition temperature of 93.5K. In order to characterize these detectors, an automatic system for measuring the voltage response...
Three Dimensional Dirac Materials in Weak Links
, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology ; Jafari, Akbar (Supervisor)
Abstract
We study the quantum transport properties of three dimensional Dirac materials within the framework of Landauer–Büttiker formalism. Charge carriers in normal metal satisfying the Schrödinger equation, can be split into four-component with appropriate matching conditions at the boundary with the three dimensional Dirac material (3DDM).We calculate the conductance and the Fano factor of an interface separating 3DDM from a normal metal, as well as the conductance through a slab of 3DDM. Under certain circumstances the 3DDM appears transparent to electrons hitting the 3DDM. We find that electrons hitting the metal-3DDM interface from metallic side can enter 3DDM in a reversed spin state as soon...
