Synthesis and Characterization of Graphene-based Material and Investigation of its Adsorption Properties for Radioactive Waste
, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology ; Outokesh, Mohammad (Supervisor)
Abstract
Nuclear power is a prominent alternative of fossil fuels that can effectively solve global warming, acid rains and other consequences of air pollutions, caused by combustion. Despite such obvious advantage, this highly compact form of energy suffers from a big problem corresponding to its nuclear waste. Graphene oxide (GO), a lamellar material with wide range of surface functional groups such as epoxy (C-O-C), hydroxyl, and carboxyl offers large surface area as well as high sorption capacity for the metallic cations. This thesis study presents a supercritical, and co-precipitation synthesis of magnetite- graphene oxide (M-GO) in which Fe3O4 nanoparticles are simultaneously formed, surface...
Synthesis and Fuctionalization of Graphene oxide for Thorium Adsorption
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Outokesh , Mohammad (Supervisor) ; Ahmadi, Javad (Supervisor)
Abstract
In this work, graphene oxide (GO) and Amino ethyl phosphonic acid (AEPA) functionalized graphene were synthesized using chemical method. In addition, reduced graphene was prepared by chemical and supercritical methods. Physical, chemical, morphological properties of as-synthesized materials were investigate using XRD, FTIR, RAMAN, UV, TEM, TGA, and BET. Thickness of monolayer GO which synthesized using Hummer’s method was evaluated 1 nm using AFM. FTIR and CHN results were affirmed the presence of AMPA onto graphene nanosheets. Adsorption properties of functionalized graphene for Th ions from aqueous solution was examined. Isotherm adsorption results demonstrated that maximum adsorption...
Investigation of Operating Parameters for Thorium Adsorption from Wastewater by Using of Radiated Grafting Polymeric Adsorbents in Packed Bed Column
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Outokesh, Mohamad (Supervisor) ; Torab Mostaedi, Meysam (Supervisor) ; Asadollahzadeh, Mehdi (Co-Supervisor) ; Torkaman, Rezvan (Co-Supervisor)
Abstract
Today, the pollution of heavy metals in wastewater and surface waters, which is a global environmental problem, has increased with the expansion of various industrial activities. Heavy metals cause serious health problems due to their accumulation in human and animal tissues. Thorium, is a radioactive element with an atomic number of 90 that is widely used in the optics, aerospace, metallurgy and chemical industries, in the manufacture of high-strength alloys, in UV photocells, and especially in the nuclear industry. The primary sources of radioactive wastewater include nuclear power plants, nuclear energy industry research centers, medical institutions, industrial production, universities,...
The Study of Effective Parameters on Thorium Extraction by Cyanex 272 in an Emulsion Liquid Membrane System
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Samadfam, Mohammad (Supervisor) ; Zaheri, Parisa (Supervisor) ; Zahakifar, Fazel (Co-Supervisor)
Abstract
This study used the emulsion liquid membrane method to investigate the extraction and separation of thorium from nitrate solution. According to the results obtained from the studies, Cyanex 272 was a suitable option for selectively extracting thorium. For simultaneous extraction and stripping of thorium from dilute aqueous solutions, an emulsion liquid membrane system consisting of Cyanex 272 as an extractant, Span 80 as a surfactant and sulfuric acid solution as a receiving phase (internal phase) was used. Emulsion liquid membrane method has high mass transfer flux due to high surface to volume ratio, which causes high extraction efficiency and fast transfer of thorium ions from its low...
Optimization of the Processes Parameters for Solvent Extraction and Precipitation of Thorium from Chahgaz Mine Ores Leach Liquor
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Outokesh, Mohammad (Supervisor) ; Zare Tavakolli, Hassan (Supervisor) ; Godocynejhad, Davood (Co-Supervisor)
Abstract
This research investigates and optimizes solvent extraction parameters for separat1ing thorium from the leach solution of the uranium-bearing ore at the ChahGaz mine. The study is applied research aimed at achieving technical knowledge of thorium extraction and purification from thorium-bearing ore through hydrometallurgical processes to obtain thorium concentrate and provide laboratory and semi-industrial flotation. The results obtained from this project lead to the production of thorium concentrate, which can later be utilized in industrial-scale applications. In this project, the influential parameters in the solvent extraction process were simultaneously examined through experimental...
