- Abstract:
- Recycling of polymers, with the aim of environmental protection and economical benefits, is important procedure, which is constantly developing. In this study the effect of the incorporation of recycled PET(r-PET) and recycled polypropylene/Flax(r-PP/Flax) to PP at low (20wt %) and medium content (40wt %) of r-PET was investigated. Polymer compounds were prepared by twin screw extruder followed by injection moulding. The effect of r-PP/Flax and r-PET on PP was evaluated using different techniques such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM), differential scanning calorimetery (DSC), rheological behavior, and mechanical properties (tensile modulus, yield strength, and charpy notched impact strength). PP-g-Ma was used as compatibilizer. The analysis of blend morphologies highlighted a two-phase morphology in which the rigid r-PET dispersed phase was distributed within the PP matrix, indicating immiscibility of the components. Mechanical properties especially elastic modulus was generally improved by the addition of r-PET and r-PP/Flax, as expected, but brittleness also increased. Compatibilizer reduced particle size via reducing surface tension at the interface and improved mechanical properties through better adhesion of the second phase to the matrix. Analysis of crystallinity in the PP phase of these blends indicated increase in the crystallization temperature of PP by incorporation of r-PET but addition of flax fiber had no effect on it. Addition of r-PET and flax to PP lead to increase in complex viscosity, storage modulus and more viscous behavior
