- Abstract:
- Crumb rubber, produced from shredding of scrap or refused tires, is one of the most commonly used modifiers of asphalt. Asphalt rubber, in addition to mitigating some of the environmental problems of disposing scrap tire, improves the flexural strength of pavement, extends the life of pavement and reduces the maintenance costs. The properties of asphalt rubber are highly dependent on the type and composition of base asphalt, type and amount of crumb rubber, and the production method. The goal of this research is to investigate the performance properties of asphalt rubbers produced from Iranian asphalt and crumb rubber, using an industrially feasible method. The Superpave testing procedure was used in this study. The base binders used are vacuum bottom residuum of crude oil and an asphalt binder with an 85-100 nominal pen grade. The crumb rubber has a nominal size of 0.4 mm. According to the goal of research, the crumb rubber and binders were mixed at a speed of 350 rpm and a temperature of 165ºC for 30 minutes. Then, the viscosity and rheological performance properties of the two binders before and after modifying with different percentages of crumb rubber were evaluated using the Superpave protocol. Results showed that the viscosity of asphalt rubbers was highly dependent on the amount of crumb rubber, type of base asphalt. Crumb rubber modification improved the performance properties at high service temperatures and increased the performance grade (PG). Also at intermediate service temperatures, asphalt rubbers showed better performance than their base binders. The properties of asphalt rubber at low service temperatures were found to be highly dependent on the type of base binder. In fact, the performance grade (PG) of asphalt did not change by adding crumb rubber, although it did result in a decrease in stiffness
