Three Dimensional Dynamic Analysis of Concrete Faced Rock-Fill Dams to Rayleigh Waves Considering Dam-Foundation Interaction and Spatial Variability of Earthquake Ground Motion

- In this research, the effects of Rayleigh waves on the response of typical three-dimensional concrete faced rock-fill dams (CFRDs), considering dam-foundation interaction and spatial variability of earthquake ground motion are investigated. The time history of Loma Prieta earthquake (Gilroy 1 station) is used as input excitation. The dam is considered to be located in a prismatic canyon with trapezoidal cross-section. A substructuring method, in which the unbounded soil is modeled by the scaled boundary finite-element method (SBFEM), is used to obtain scattered motion and interaction forces along the canyon. Non-linear model is used for rock fill material, and contact element with Coulomb friction law is utilized at the interface of the dam body and the concrete face-slab.The results of the analysis were compared with the effect of obliquely combined incident P and SV waves. Furthermore, the effect of reservoir elevation and canyon stiffness has been also considered. The hydrodynamic effect of reservoir was ignored based on previous works. The results show that relative vertical motion of the abutments of the canyon and the magnification acceleration response of the dam crest subjected to Rayleigh waves are greater than those attained for combined P and SV waves. Results of the analysis in the face-slab also indicate that severe scattering of Rayleigh wave induces large internal forces in the face-slab particularly at the lower corners of the trapezoidal face-slab and the face slab may experiences tensile failure and local buckling at this region if appropriate reinforcement is not provided. The effect of reservoir elevation on internal forces developed in the face slab is more significant in the longitudinal direction of the face slab strips
