- Abstract:
- Viscoelastic(VE) dampers are among the most practical passive control devices that are used to reduce the seismic-induced response of the structures. In this regard, extensive parametric studies have been conducted so far to investigate the performance of these dampers in reducing the seismic response of the structures under various types of ground motions and site soils. In most of these researches, the effect of soil-structure interaction (SSI) is neglected which is acceptable only for the structures located on stiff soils. In present research, the effect of the soil-structure interaction on the performance of VE dampers in reducing the seismic structural response is investigated. Also, optimal distribution of these dampers along the height of structure was among the other objectives of this study. Therefore, a number of 3-D regular and irregular structural models with different heights and eccentricities are prepared with VE dampers being implemented in orthogonal directions of all floors. Then, considering the sub-structural method, and using a number of springs and dash-pots, the prepared models were extended to include the effects of SSI. Finally, the performance of the VE dampers in reducing the seismic response of the structural models was investigated in the presence of SSI. SAP2000 software was used for the modeling as well as the numerical analyses. The results indicate the efficiency of the VE Dampers in reducing the story displacement and shear force responses of the structural models. Furthermore, these dampers showed proper capability in reducing the seismic response of the structural models in the presence of SSI. However, their performance on soft soils with smaller shear wave velocities was less compared to other soil types. Evaluation of different VE damper distribution schemes along the height of the structural models showed that the VE distribution pattern being proportional to the story shear forces is appropriate in reducing the story displacements, while the VE distribution pattern proportional to the story stiffness is best suited for base shear reduction
