Synthesis of Novel Biodegradable Collagen-Based Superabsorbent Hydrogels and Investigation of their Swelling Behavior in Various Media

- The use of super-swelling polymers is steadily increasing and the applications in industry are continuing to grow. With the authorization of the superabsorbents in food packaging by the Food and Drug Administration recently, demand may soon take off in the market. The worldwide production of SAPs is more than one million tons per year, representing a multibillion-dollar market. However, the increase in prices of petroleum products in recent years may be a drawback for these acrylic-based materials. Thus, there is now a need to develop natural-based super-swelling hydrogels which are more economical and environment friendly. In addition, the super-swelling gels are promising novel functions in the biomedical and pharmaceutical applications. In the present study, we have synthesized novel hydrogels through chemical crosslinking by graft copolymerization of different monomers such as acrylamide (AAm), 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid (AMPS), acrylic acid (AA), 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate (HEA), or mixture of these monomers onto the hydrolyzed collagen, in the presence of a crosslinking agent and a free radical initiator. The hydrogels were assessed by FT IR, TGA thermal method and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Each hydrogels was investigated from different point of views: •Collagen-g-poly(acrylic acid) was synthesized and the synthesis of hydrogel was optimized by different methods. •A novel hydrolyzed collagen-based hydrogel has been prepared by grafting the binary mixture of acrylamide and 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid onto the collagen backbone in the presence of a crosslinking agent. The effect of reaction variables on both gel content and swelling capacity was investigated to achieve a hydrogel with improved absorbency and gel content. •Hydrolyzed collagen-g-poly(sodium acrylate-co-2-hydroxyethyl acrylate) hydrogel has been prepared by grafting the binary mixture of acrylic acid and 2-hydroxy ethyl acrylate onto the collagen backbone in the presence of a crosslinking agent. To investigate the effect of monomer ratio on swelling behavior in various media three hydrogels with different acrylic acid/2-hydroxyethyl acrylate (AA/HEA) weight ratios were synthesized and swelling capacity was assessed. Moreover, a similar carrageenan-based hydrogel are also synthesized and compared with this hydrogel. •Superabsorbent hydrogel composites were prepared by graft copolymerization of acrylic acid onto the collagen backbone in the presence of a crosslinking agent and silica gel powder. The swollen gel strength of hydrogels was measured. Physicochemical properties of all these hydrogels in aqueous solution were studied. Many of these hydrogels exhibited reversible pH-responsiveness properties. Therefore, these materials may be considered as excellent candidates for various applications, such as designing novel drug delivery systems.
