  7. Abstract:
  8. Multilateral wells are relatively new alternatives in field development and because they can increase the productivity per well and reduce the cost of field development, they are rapidly replacing old methods. In order to predict the performance of well, three methods are usually used: Analytical methods which use closed-forms models, semi-analytical methods which entails line-source model and numerical methods which is based on techniques such as finite volume or finite difference. In this thesis, line-source model is extended from two dimensional forms to three dimensional forms in order to be used to optimize the path of multilateral wells. Optimization entails direct optimization algorithms which include genetic algorithm and pattern search algorithm. In previous works for optimization of multilateral wells, it was assumed the main part of well and its laterals obey the equation of straight line, but in this research by use of derived equations from line-source model, optimization is performed in a way that main part of well and its laterals can have curved forms and after comparing of this condition with the case that well trajectory is only straight lines. It is shown that there would be at least 6 percent increase in oil production in a condition that we neglect pressure loss in the well and the lateral can have curved form path instead of just straight laterals
