  8. This research deals with selection of appropriate acquisition method mainly at a firm level. Technology plays a crucial role in firms competetive advantage and should be managed carefully. Management of technology consists of five major functions: Identification, Evaluation & Selection, Acquisition, Exploitation and Protection. From a practical point of view, acquisition is the most important stage of MOT process. Technology can be acquired through different methods. Deciding on technology acquisition method needs three decisions about Mode, Mechanisim and Operional Model to be determined respectively. There are different modes of acquisition such as internal R&D, technology transfer and collaboration. After selecting the appropriate mode, the next level of technology acquisition method concerns deciding a suitable way of acquisition (mechanism), for example JV, joint R&D, outsorcing, merging, licensing and product purchase. The last (third) level of decesion making deals with deciding on an appropriate operational model which helps managers in practice to accomplish technology acquisition sub-process. The mentioned levels of decision making should be consistent. The main aim of this research is developing a comprehensive methodology to determine a set of appropriate mode, mechanism and operational model for acquiring a given technology. For this purpose, two parallel approaches have been pursued:a) A wide and deep survey of MOT litterature especially in the field of technology acquisition. b) Investigation of actual projects of iranian automotive and part manufacturing industries in the field of technology acquisition. This exploratary research has been performed through interviewing the top managers of Irankhodro and SAPCO companies.
