- Abstract:
- Our ultimate goal in this thesis is to design a chaotic receiver for detecting small targets in sea clutter. Sea clutter at low grazing angle has a spiky behavior and in this thesis we desire to model this irregular behavior in the chaos theory frame work. Using a trend similar to statistical detection theory, we will obtain the suboptimal chaotic receiver and investigate the receiver noise effect on the optimality or sub optimality of the detector. Chaotic detector can be used in the coherent and non coherent mode. Although the coherent detector has a superior performance, the efficiency of the non coherent detector is acceptable as well. We will investigate the efficiency of the chaotic detector for different transmission polarizations and will show that the horizontal polarization is more efficient than the vertical one. Our goal is to represent a practical method to design the chaotic detector so we have shown all design stages in a logical and algorithmic manner. To investigate the quality of the detector, we have made use of practical radar data in order to emphasize on the practical implementation. The final part has been devoted to the comparison of the chaotic and the stochastic detector. Although we can use different statistical detectors including coherent or non coherent and with different assumptions on signal and clutter statistics, in order to have the best detection performance, we have used compound coherent model. In order to consider an ideal case in which there is no uncertainty in the clutter model, at first, we have estimated model parameters from available data and then using these parameters we have accomplished the detection task. Finally, we have made a comparison between chaotic and stochastic detectors showing the superiority of the chaotic detector which is an evidence of the fact that the chaotic model can model the clutter behavior more efficient than the stochastic one.
