  7. Abstract:
  8. In this study numerical methods are used for modeling flow and simulation of aerosol transport and deposition in alveolar zone of human lung. The flow modeling is done by FLUENT code, using its moving boundaries feature. For particle tracking we developed a code that uses results of velocity field obtained by FLUENT code. Two-dimensional the axisymmetric model was investigated in this study, and was exhibited that rhythmically expanding walls in alveolar duct model has significant influence on flow patterns and particles transport mechanism. In this study we also developed a three-dimensional model of a single alveolated duct with moving boundaries allowing for the cyclic expansion and contraction that occurs during breathing. This modeling justified the results of streamline patterns in the two-dimensional model. The model was used to simulate particle trajectories of 1–5 µm particles in different orientations with respect to the gravity. Orientation had a significant effect on the overall deposition. The predicted deposition was significantly greater in the model with moving boundaries than in the model without the moving boundaries. We conclude that modeling the motion of boundaries is important due to the effect of the velocity field and particle deposition within the alveolar zone.
